Chan Pak Yu always knows how to generate cheer. (Did you make fun of him as the shortest guy?) I have a conscience, plus I am wearing four inch heels, I can't pick on them!" Ken in order to match Yumiko's height wore shoes with soles. As for Yumiko's conservative clothing, Ken explained, "The film is about love. She wants to bring out the correct idea about love!" After the award many friends congratulated her, including ones from Canada. The happiest among them of course was boss Paco Wong. She hoped that the boss would reward her with several more hits or movies theme songs. Some accused the usually good live performer of being off key in the first half of the song. She admitted that she was very nervous during the first half because she did not clearly see the group of Best Actors like Andy Lau Tak Wa, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) until she was on stage. However she felt that in the second half she gradually reached quality. The boss and many friends all said that she performed very well. She said, "The first half of the song I was too nervous for so my singing wasn't too stable. It was my first time singing in front of so many large figures so I was a little nervous." Some also criticized her make up as frightening. She laughed, "Haha, red lips, an artist has to try anything. That night I tried a new look, which I didn't feel was too bad. Of course to each its own, but if I didn't try it how would I know whether it was right for me." * (4/16/2008) The Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam, Law Chung Him, I Love U Boyz and Fama starred HAPPY FUNERAL (LOK LAU HAU JOR 2 GA SHOOK JEH LAI) will open next Thursday. He instead has been nominated many times but never won. Lee Nin Kit was obviously excited to receive Jackie Chan's call and was all grins. After they arrived at the press conference venue, they made up with director Yuen Wo Ping and others to meet over 300 media outlets from all over Asia. Now his dream has finally come true and come to fruition, I am very touched." Actually while Wa Jai was making the film he had a crazy suggestion for the director. "I knew the director was a THREE KINGDOMS fan and planned to adapt THREE KINGDOMS stories into many films. I suggested to him for me to one THREE KINGDOMS character after another, first Zhao Zilong, then Liu Bei, then Lord Guan, to see how many characters I could play. However, many friends after seeing this film told me that it was another higher level from THE WARLORDS' performance, which made me feel that I finally have become a real substance actor." As for being the host, she said that Sammi Cheng Sau Man originally was very afraid. Tsz Shan said that at the party she already asked Nai Hoi to write another story for her. He agreed right away, but she did not know whether he was sober. As for displaying the award at home, she joked that she would hold it in her sleep. She honestly said that she has never thought about the Best Actress award as a future goal because it was too far off. Would he serenade a girl in real life? He said, "I really never try to sing love songs to girls because I am very shy. When I make my feelings known I am already stuttering, not to mention singing......I think taking the initiative to make my feelings known is already my bottom line." Did Cheng Hei YI fall for Hung Cheuk Lap's singing? She said, "For a moment I was because his singing truly was good and the feeling was very romantic. Even if the guy doesn't sing well but dares to sing a love song to express his feelings, I feel that sincerity would make me feel very touched!" They in the film needed to dance but they had frequent bad takes because Hung Cheuk Lap kept accidentally stepping on Cheng Hei Yi's foot. The crew kept making fun of him. Gigi Leung Wing Kei, Zhang Jingchu, Linda Chung Ka Yun, Cherrie Ying Choi Yi and Shu Qi were among the sexiest. One of the hosts Sammi Cheng Sau Man appeared in a suit. Though sexiness was lacking she successfully stole the show. Sammi last night host for the first time with Sandra Ng Kwan Yu and Carol Cheng Yui Ling. The latter two both appeared in sexy evening wear. Sammi however appeared in a suit with a bowtie. For her first Hong Kong Film Award host gig, she honestly said that she was nervous and her mind was a complete blank because she was worried that she would say something wrong. She said, "I have never been so scared, I truly am a little sorry. I know everyone would wear evening wear so I deliberately wear a suit, which cacn also hide my shaking legs." Sister Do said that Sammi early in the rehearsal was indeed a little nervous, but later she has already improved. She was even flirting! Best Actress nominee Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin wore 100,000 Gucci evening gown and the boss lady's 3 million personal collection jewelry. Ah Sa said that her jaw was chattering from fright. She expressed that she had Fei Jeh's photo and offering at home. Yesterday morning she has already told Fei Jeh. Her father Adam Cheng Siu Chau also knew that she would accept the award on Fei Jeh's behalf and sent a text message to her. When Yun Yi accepted the award from Elaine Lok Yi Ling, Ng See Yuen, Fok Chun Ting and Yu Kam Kei she sentimentally shed tears. "I don't speak as well as Mommy. I have to thank the event for presenting an award to my Mommy. With everyone's recognition, I believe Mommy would be just as happy as me. I know Mommy liked her job a lot, everything she did was very professional and would give the best side and joy to everyone. I feel Mommy has left me with the most valuable present, the passion and professionalism for work. She will always be my role model." The event invited Josephine Siao Fong Fong to record a video that honored Fei Jeh's show business achievement. She expressed that when the event invited her to record the video she dreamt of Fei Jeh a few days before. "Fei Seh is smart, sharp and is the pillar of professional. She said that she wanted to make movies from several decades before. I said that at 60 she would be laughed at for still working. Then she just crackled. Her laughter was my favorite. A few days after the dream, I immediately received the event's invitation letter to say these words." Raymond Chow Man Wai received the Lifetime Achievement. He said that the film industry has many late risers. He thanked everyone for their continuing hard work and wished that they would spread Hong Kong and Chinese films and lead them to the world market. Tony Leung Chiu Wai who was responsible for the event's opening speech was asked why his girlfriend Carina Lau Ka Ling did not come. He said that Ka Ling had to work in Taiwan. As for rumors that he would propose to Ka Ling last night, he said, "What a prank! If it's a movie then may be. Do you think it's really a movie? (Will you wed this year?) It's being planned." When the show opened, Sandra Ng Kwan Yu praised Do Do as the top host, Do Do joked that the event asked Kwan Yu to host because she was flat. Smartly Kwan Yu referred to her salary as flat. Also Ng Kwan Yu was biased for Peter Chan Ho Sun as she continuously promoted his films and even claimed that she would do so in Cantonese, Mandarin and Thai. Do Do immediately pretended to slap Kwan Yu; later Kwan Yu urged the event to present Best Director and Best Picture first. Do Do scolded, "Do you think only you have family here? Others have families too!" When Cheng Pei Pei and her daughters presented the Best Sound Effect Award, Marsha Yuan Ji Wai took the envelop out of the front of her dress. However due to the winners were Thai, when they announced the result Peter Chan Ho Sun did not know that his own movie has won. His friends had to remind him before he went on stage. Before the race most of the attention went to the Best Actor award. Finally Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) won with THE WARLORDS (TAU MING JONG). Best Actress went to the Siqin Gaowa starred POSTMODERN LIFE OF MY AUNT. THE WARLORDS even swept eight awards including Best Director and Best Pictures and became last night's big winner. Before presenting the Best Actor award, the three hosts defended their picks. Kwan Yu supported Lee Nin Kit, Sister Do supported Lau Ching Wan, while Sammi supported both Lau Ching Wan and Andy Lau Tak Wa. The remaining nominees Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Simon Yam Tat Wa had no supporters? Kwan Yu immediately explained, "They have model support! One Doi Doi (Lynn Xiong) and one Qi Qi!" First time Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor Lee Nin Kit stated, "This road took 28 years and finally I have arrived! I really thank (my) wife (Nina) Li Chi. she is the lead actress of my heart. We have no you or me." Did he feel the award came too late? He expressed that he has never thought about winning an award. Even his wife was at peace with his nomiation, but as an action actor was he especially touched to be able to win Best Actor? He said, "I never thought about it. Film is my job, I would keep working. (Would you switch to drama?) I don't live in the film world, but will work hard to create a second world." Siqin Gaowa expressed that she came to visit friends in Hong Kong because she felt the award was no competition. Award or not was no big deal. She only worked to do her job well. In the past she has already won awards in Hong Kong many times. HOMECOMING (CHI SHUI LAU NIN) won her the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress already. She not only thanked everyone for their love but also felt that the award did not differentiate between age, looks or nationality. The recent Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor has gone to Mainland actresses. She only said that her two award winning film characters were very lame. The jury had its principles and hopefull these principels, style and generosity could continue on. In addition, Peter Chan Ho Sun was very happy about the film sweeping 8 awards. The only regret was only one of the three lead actors could win an award. Kwan Yu joked that she wanted a raise, he expressed that the award did not represent that the film could sell for a lot. Instead a good movie might bring less money home. Would he get a raise? He said that it was priceless. He has always been making his own movies and did not know how much he was worth. Andy Lau Tak Wa defeated strong competition from Chow Yun Fat and others and with Susan Shaw Yam Yam won Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Both have won the category for the first time. When Wa Jai was announced to be the winner, many ladies erupted in cheers. On stage Ng Kwan Yu even welcomed him with an embrace. Later he even asked for hugs from Cheng Yui Ling and Cheng sau Man. Presenter Eric Tsang Chi Wai said jealously, "Who would win an award and get so many hugs?" Wa Jai expressed that in his heart lead and support roles had no difference so he was just excited about winning an award. In the future he would like every character to receive show business recognition. He stated, "I feel the audience doesn't ask too much of me. Instead show business colleagues really want me to improve, so my pressure also comes from show business." Wa Jai also said that film was a part of his life, like air it could not be done without. Rice and furniture at his home all came from filmmaking so without film he would not be able to live. Rumored to have crossed Wa Jai and had his rental luxury home seized, Chapman To Man Jat initially only shook Wa Jai's hand. Later when Tsang Chi Wai arranged for him to present the award to Wa Jai they graciously embraced. To Man Jat made fun of Chi Wai on stage, "Last year you made so many films yet you got no nomination?" Chi Wai struck back, "Last year so many pepole died in Hong Kong, I don't see you die! I don't feel you are making movies or anything, are you sick?" To Man Jat joked, "So much extravagance......." Chi Wai added, "So much payback". They also joked that all the Best Supporting Actor nominees were all handsome but did something incorrigible (in the film). Best Supporting Actress Shaw Yam Yam describes this time as her first nomination, first award and first time on stage so she was not prepared. However because of this she finally knew happiness was this. She happily said, "Before the fact I never thought about winning an award, now that I won of course I am happy!" As for winning an award, she of course felt that she performed very well. However she not necessarily was the best. She would share this joy with her family and friends because this award did not come easily. It was even more meaningful. Did she feelt the award came too late? She said, "The company didn't apply for me before. This time I won with my first nomination, it's already considered early. I didn't think I would win so I don't know how I would celebrate, but I would bring the award to pose for photos with the 15 dogs at home." In addition Best New Performer award winner Kate Tsui Tsz Shan won with her first film. she honestly said that she was happy and unforgettable. From now on she would work even harder. After winning, she wanted to contact her parents right away, but her mother was not in Hong Kong. After the celebration she would return home to contact with Mommy on the ocmputer. She would like to make a musical film the most and she would not abandon her television work. Later a charity premiere will be held to raise fund for the Hong KOng Save Abandoned Animal Association. Gigi Leung Wing Kei has always been very supportive of SAA. She quickly agreed to provide her voice to the film. Actually this was already the second time Gigi has provied her voice for SAA. Earlier she did so for QUILL, which was well received ad even more friends had deeper understanding of the SAA mission and work. She hoped that this time she would be able to promote animal protection message. Gigi this time would provide her voice to the aunt. Her voice had to be gentler and kinder. She hoped to be able to thoroughly display her hiddenly motherly nature. Gigi said that when she provied her voice for animal films she was moved to tears. This time she also got teary eyed. Luckily the ending was a happy one. Gigi was a dog lover herself. Recently her 14 year old cocker passed away. Gigi honestly said that she was very heart broken but would miss the happy times with it. Tony Leung Ka Fai, Wu Fung, Jacky Jai and Eric Suen Yiu Wai also provided their voices to the film. This was Suen Yiu Wai's first film voice acting. He provided his voice to the self defense team member who rescues the disaster victims. He felt voice acting was very hard. He also said that as soon as he heard Sau Gor's voice work he knew it was him because he was a style. Suen Yiu Wai also said that he could not be more suitable to provide the voice of a mouse because he spoke fast. * (4/13/2008) Andy Lau Tak Wa two nights ago attended an interactive art exhibit opening as long as director Johnnie To Kei Fung. This year's Hong Kong Film Award would take place tonight. Wa Jai has both a Best Actor and a Best Supporting Actor nomination. How was his confidence? He would like the most for Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) to be the Best Actor so he urged anyone who supports THE WARLORDS (TAU MING JONG) to win for Lee Nin Kit and not to divide up the votes. Anyone who wants to vote for him can vote for Best Supporting Actor. Chow Yun Fat is also a fellow nominees in that category. Was he competing with Fat Gor? He expressed that he did not mind and said that this year's Best Supporting Actor nominees were all very special. Each had a different performance so even losing would not be embarrassing. As for Best Supporting Actress he for some reason would like Shao Yam Yam to win because he felt she performed very well and very uniquely. Would he like to win both awards? He said, "I haven't even thought about one, not to mention two. This year has been very happy though because of the variety and the harmonious atmosphere." In addition, Lau Ching Wan is the Best Actor favorite. Ah To laughed, "If he is lucky he will get it! He was lucky last year, let's see if he is this year. If he isn't then no. I am just joking, only saying that because I am so close with Ching Wan. (What about Wa Jai?) Does he need one? He has won them all! Leave it for the new generation, if he wins again he should win Best Director too!" As for his own Best Director nomination, he humbly says, "When would it be my turn? (Are you only accepting overseas awards?) No, actually I also respect Hong Kong's voting standard. (Wa Jai feels this year's atmosphere has been very harmonious?) The Taiwan 'Presidential' election was very harmonious too, I don't know about the rest!" * (4/13/2008) Gucci's first Macau specialty store opened two nights ago. Qi Qi and Simon Yam Tat Wa attended. Yam Tat Wa appeared in a student hairstyle. Actually earlier he was working on an Early Republic scene. However his wife Qi Qi did not seem to appreciate the cut and joked that he looked very lame. She even scared their daughter that if she did not have her vegetable she would look like her father. The Hong Kong Film Award would take place tonight. Yam Tat Wa with EYE IN THE SKY (GUNG JUNG) received a Best Actor nomination. He said that whether he would win or not he would wear his lucky suit while Qi Qi expressed that she would pray for him. * (4/13/2008) Sammi Cheng Sau Man and Gigi Leung Wing Kei yesterday promoted World Vision's city wide child sponsorship program. At tonight's Hong Kong Film Award, Sammi would host along with Carol Cheng Yui Ling and Sandra Ng Kwan Yu. Because hosting has always been her weakest suit, she was panicking. She said that originally she had a lot of segments but she said that her reaction was not as fast as Sister Do or Kwan Yu. She urged the event to reduce her appearance and give her less line like she was a guest host. Sammi thanked the event for accommodating her in reducing her fear. However her legs were still shaking during rehearsal. Sammi jokingly thanked the event for taking a risk on her as a host, perhaps after this time she would not have a next time. Luckily this time she would work with two masters in Sister Do and Kwan Yu so she was more at ease. As for jewelry, she joked that she could not even sort out her script she should not be hanging things all over herself. She would be better off remembering her lines. Sammi would not ask for much from her performance, just not to be destructive. She picked Siqin Gaowa and Andy Lau Tak Wa to win Best Actress and Best Actor. She also picked Chow Yun Fat to win Best Supporting Actor. * (4/13/2008) Yumiko Cheng Hei Yi, Ken Hung Cheuk Lap, Chan Pak Yu and Tong So Kei yesterday attended a LOVE IS ELSEWHERE (OI CHING MAN SHUI) fan events. Playing an artist in the film, Cheng Hei Yi yesterday was asked to draw. She said that she only took two drawing lessons when she was little and both times she drew pandas. She felt that she had no talent for it as everything looked very abstract. This film was Hung Cheuk Lap's first. He honestly said that he was very nervous. Earlier at the film festival premiere he has already seen his own performance and felt very unnatural. During his kiss scene with Cheng Hei Yi they both ducked down in an awkward manner. He expressed that his mother has seen it as well and felt that his first film was already decent. However she did not mention that kiss scene. * (4/12/2008) The 27th Annual Hong Kong Film Award will take place tomorrow night. Yesterday a worship ceremony was held backstage at the Cultural Center. Attendees included Hong Kong Film Award Association chair Gordon Chan Ka Seung, vice chair and creative director Eric Tsang Chi Wai and guest performer Denise Ho Wan Si; at the time the event announced this year's hosts will be Sandra Ng Kwan Yu, Carol Cheng Yui Ling and Sammi Cheng Sau Man. Guest presenters will include Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, Gigi Leung Wing Kei, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa, Yasuaki Kurata (Chong Tin Bo Siu), Kuei Lun-Mei, Shu Qi, Shawn Yue Man Lok, Hu Jun and others. This year's Lifetime Achievement Award winner will be Raymond Chow Man Wai. Business and Economic Development Council chief Ma Si Hung will present the award. This year the Professionalism Award has been added to award Lydia Shum Din Ha. Joyce Cheng Yun Yi will accept the award on her mother's behalf and Tsui Kam Kei, Ng See Yuen and Fok Chun Ting will be the guest presenters. Earlier the Hong Kong Film Award was rumored to be lacking finance, Chan Ka Seung expressed appreciation for Mainland Huayi Brothers' 300,000 sponsorship. Now the entire award show's production cost was around 4 million. This year overseas guests will be few. Chan Ka Seung explained that he wanted to do a more intimate and familiar Hong Kong award show. Yet some accused the guest presenters to seem to lack in calibre as even Stephy Tang Lai Yun and Yue Man Lok were presenting. Chan Ka Seung pointed out that guests were not measured in calibre. Mainly the industry encouraged each other. Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) was a guest presenter previously. In term of calibre he would not have known when he would have been a guest presenter. Tsang Chi Wai was in charge of production. He expressed that he would use the TRIO crew for the stage work. Cheng Sau Man's hosting duty required persuasion from a variety of sources. Even Do Do and Kwan Yu helped. Sammi had to consider for awhile before agreeing since she has never host before and did not rely on hosting for a living. If she did poorly she would be criticized. She also had to pay for her own clothing. Thus Chi Wai has sent many text messages to thank her. He pointed out that Sammi herself was very nervous and had to rehearse hard. Ho Wan Si will perform the late lyrics creator and screen writer Chan Dip Yi's work like LOVER'S TEAR (CHING YUN DIK NGAN LUI) and GIVE ME A KISS (CUP NGOR YUT GOR MUN). Ah Si honestly said that she was surprised to be invited to perform this segment because the Hong Kong Film Award was an annual event and had so many superstars and directors in the audience. Now she has been working hard on remembering the lyrics because her segment was a salute to Chan Dip Yi. She could not possibly forget the lyrics. Ah Si also said that earlier she thought about her costume and was afraid that an evening gown was dragged. Luckily her performance would be more active and the event told her not to dress like that. Otherwise she would scare the guests. Reporters joked that she could dance and strip. She said, "This is even scarier, it's like making a stain for myself." Ronald Cheng Chung Kei and Kary Ng Fei Yu would also performed the five Best Song nominees. * (4/12/2008) The Tsui Hark directed and Father of Korea's MY SASSY GIRL Kwak Jae-Yong written NUI YUN BUT WAI (WOMEN NOT BAD) started production in February in Beijing. Kwak Jae-Yong was very concerned with the production progress and yesterday attended with Tsui Hark the Beijing press conference. Kwak Jae-Yong expressed that he met Tsui Hark in 1992. At the time Tsui Hark was promoting the ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA (WONG FEI HUNG) film series in Korea. They not only had exchanges about films but also had drinks. Even though they had a language barrier, they got along famously. As for the cast's complaint about Director Tsui Hark's constantly changing orders, the reporters asked the screen writer whether he would mind any script change. Kwak Jae-Yong expressed, "Of course not, the screenplay itself is a basis for the film. During the production process the film would definitely due to new sparks from director and actor communications change. So I wouldn't mind Tsui Hark's script changes." Although when they met they could not communiate, their hearts were in the same place due to movies and drinking. Kwak Jae-Yong brought a bottle of wine from Korea to Tsui Hark and expressed that it was a type of wine that "sobers as you drink" due to the super sized ginseng in it. Tsui Hark returned with his favorite Beijing wine. When asked about the gifts, both directors actually loved drinking. Kwak Jae-Yong once had 20 some glasses of highly concentrated white wine and remained sober. When asked the changes of the film's actresses Zhou Xun, Kuei Lun-Mei and Kitty Zhang Yuqi, Tsui Hark expressed that they actually have never attempted ths type of comedy. Zhou Xun has gone from a "tragedy professional" to a smart little woman, Kuei Lun-Mei from an innocent girl to "wild", and Zhang Yuqi from a nice girl to someone who "has to have her own way and men can do nothing about that." * (4/12/2008) The Jingle Ma Chor Sing directed new film THE BUTTERFLY LOVERS (MO HUP LEUNG JOOK) yesterday held a production start ceremony. Leads Wu Chun, Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, Hu Ge, Harlem Yu Ching Hing, Ti Lung and others attended. The film company arranged for Harlem to welcome the leads Wu Chun and Ah Sa with drums. Later action director Ching Siu Tung taught them to write Leung Jook with their swords. For his first costume film Wu Chun was very satisfied with his costume. Although the action scenes have been very tough he felt they were a process. He praised Ah Sa as a girl who could easily become good friends with. As for any intimate scene, he expressed that he did not know. When asked whether he would like some he asked reporters to ask Ah Sa. He worked under the director's arrangement so he did not mind. Ah Sa yesterday appeared in a male costume. She felt like she was a bad child and Wu Chun was too pretty. Reporters said that Wu Chun would not mind any intimate scene. Ah Sa said that she did not mind either. As for rumors of Gillian Chung Yun Tung's Hollywood future, Ah Sa said that she was not ambitious but if she had an opportunity she would like to try as well. Lately Ah Sa had to work on BUTTERFLY as well as STORM RIDERS II (FUNG WON II). Has Ah Gil visited her? She honestly said that she too would like Ah Gil to go to Thailand because it offers a lot of fun. Tomorrow night would be the Hong Kong Film Award. Ah Sa with SIMPLY ACTORS (HEI WONG JI WONG) was nominated for Best Actress. She was confident but also had a headache from choosing her wardrobe. Finally she chose one from over ten to coordinate with the jewelry. Ah Sa said, one lifetime only offered several opportunities like this so she had to dress up for the evening. Earlier Hu Ge had scars all over his face due to a car accident. He said that in October he will have a major surgery as now he is under laster surgery treatment and relies on make up to hide the scars. Hu Ge said that due to the accident many people would recognize him now, so something good came from the tragedy. * (4/11/2008) Louis Koo Tin Lok and Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) two nights ago attended a forum for their film RUN PAPA RUN (YUT GOR HO BA BA) and shared their production experience with students. Goo Jai said that although it was his second forum he still felt very nervous because he was not prepared at all and was afraid that students would ask something serious. The film held its premiere days earlier. Goo Jai and Cheung Ngai Ga both expressed that the response has been great. Goo Jai also felt that due to the recent releases of numerous costume war films, this comedy would be good for a change. Working with Rene Liu (Lau Yeuk Ying) again, Goo Jai felt that because Hong Kong actresses were few and they had chemistry already the production was easier to grasp. If they would still be able to work together from now on it would not be bad. As for a sequel, he said, "For a sequel my on screen daughter should be the lead because by the end of the film I was already 50 something. Yet I feel we should quit while we are ahead and disagree with any sequel." Cheung Ngai Ga also expressed that she would not make a sequel. * (4/11/2008) The 27th Annual Hong Kong Film Award would take place on Sunday at the Cultural Center. With 3 days away, the Best Actor war has garnered the most attention and is the fiercest. This year's Best Actor nominees included THE DETECTIVE (C+ JING TAM)'s Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, THE WARLORDS (TAU MING JONG)'s Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) and Andy Lau Tak Wa, MAD DETECTIVE (SUM TAM)'s Lau Ching Wan and EYE IN THE SKY (GUNG JUNG)'s Simon Yam Tat Wa. Kwok Fu Sing has a Hong Kong Film Award Best Actor nomination for a third straight year. Last year's Best Actor Lau Ching Wan has received uniform praise for his portrayal of a neurotic detective. If international film star Lee Nin Kit would win it would be his first Hong Kong Film Award. Louis Koo Tin Lok picked Lau Ching Wan, "Ching Wan performed very well with the multiple personality character, which felt very fresh and was a huge acting challenge. I really like the MAD DETECTIVE screenplay." Charlie Yeung Choi Nei picked Kwok Fu Sing. "Sing Sing and I have worked together on AFTER THIS OUR EXILE (FU JI) and he has won the Golden Horse Best Actor award. His acting is great. This time in the film his performance is also very thorough. However I also like Ching Wan's sloppy character in MAD DETECTIVE, but I have to choose one I would vote for Sing Sing." Richie Jen (Yam Yin Chai) chose Lau Tak Wa. "I know every nominee so it's truly hard to choose. If I have to, I would vote for Lau Tak Wa who is in my company. I really like (Peter) Chan Ho Sun's THE WARLORDS, the entire film is very well made." Best Actor Eric Tsang Chi Wai was stuck between Lee Nin Kit and Lau Ching Wan. "Ching Wan's performance was great, the character, someone with neurosis, is not easy. I really like his interpretation, but Lee Nin Kit seems to have never won Best Actor. He is a martial art actor, but his inner emotional scenes are just as great. His victory would be a pleasant surprise for everyone. In the end I would choose Lee Nin Kit." Kate Tsui Tsz Shan has made the jump from television actress to film's new flavor, which of course hard work and luck have something to do with. Most recently with EYE IN THE SKY (GUNG JUNG) she is nominated for Best New Actor. Although she is one of the favorites she has no expectation and said that if she wins it would be all director Yau Nai Hoi's credit. Many have successfully made the jump from television to the big screen as Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Chow Yun Fat and Maggie Cheung Man Yuk have radiated the film industry earlier. Lately television artists often failed at the film industry. Tsz Shan is one of the luckier ones as she is able to work with Johnnie To Kei Fung, Tony Leung Ka Fai and Simon Yam Tat Wa in her first film. With the silliness of her character, a reflection of her real life, and Yau Nai Hoi's camera use, Tsz Shan succeeded with a New Actor award at the Directors' Guild Spring Banquet. However, Tsz Shan humbly claims that she is just passable. "At the time I was still new and had confidence in myself. 90% of the time I relied on the director's guidance. Later the film was released and many people after watching said that the director made me look like I knew how to act. So I feel even more that the credit should go to the director. I am truly very lucky." Due to the film's good reviews, it was invited to many film festivals. Tsz Shan also walked the red carpet for the first time. As for the difference with the TVB anniversary red carpet, Tsz Shan says, "Film Festivals are international, the anniversary is my company's own party. The feeling of participating in a film festival is shaky. When you look at the world you would see many superstars. I have seen Gong Li and Jeon Do-Yeon. The feeling is completely different." Elder Leung Chiu Wai has won 14 Best Actors. Tsz Shan would like to be able to tie his mark. "He truly is unprecedented. I don't dare to have any expectation because I am afraid of disappointment and too much pressure. Wait until then! If I do win the award should be dedicated to the director!" As for competing with fellow TVB actress Linda Chung Ka Yun Tsz Shan says that she is the hard working type who has kept working since she got into the business. She also enjoys her film LOVE IS NOT ALL AROUND (SUP FUN OI) and praises her decent quality. Thus she picks her to win. This year's Best Supporting Actress contest is rather chaotic as Karen Mok Man Wai, Anita Yuen Wing Yi, Vicki Zhao Wei, Shao Yam Yam and Maggie Siu Mei Kei have good chances. Each nominees have had a glorious past and certain supporters. The favorite as of late, Shao Yam yam humbly says that she is just playing along because Mok Man Wai who has just signed a Hollywood contract is full of sunshine. She believes that she is the real deal. Among the nominees everyone looks good to her except herself. Yuen Len Len is a past Best Actress, and Zhao Wei and Siu Mei KEi both are frequent nominees. Hers however is a first time nomination, so she already feels very happy to be able to have the opportunity. Originally just a first year secondary school student, Wong Hau Yan has caught BESIEGED CITY (WAI SING) director Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung)'s eyes and become a lead actress. With her natural acting ability she is nominated for the Best New Actor award. Hau Yan says that she is already as excited as winning the lotto about the nomination. "The director says that not everyone new comer can walk the red carpet, so I would cheris this chance and definitely would bring a camera!" This year's nominees are all top stars like Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing, and Siqin Gaowa, but Hau Yan chuckles. "I don't want to see them! I want to see (Kelly) Chen Wai Lam! I like the younger ones, no generation gap." Among her fellow nominees Hau Yam picks Linda Chung Ka Yun. With already over 30 films on her resume, Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin finally with SIMPLY ACTORS (HEI WONG JI WONG) received a Best Actress nomination. However she votes for Teresa Mo Shun Kwan instead. At age 25 Ah Sa has already in the film industry for 9 years. Back then she still has not joined show business officially when she took a role in Francis Ng Chun Yu's WHAT IS A GOOD TEACHER (JI CHUNG TA LOI LIU). About her performance she says, "I never thought that DIARY (MONG SEUNG) would win at the Puchon Film Festival, I thought even less about being nominated for Best Actress with SIMPLY ACTORS along with Gong Li and also have a Hong Kong Film Award nomination." With strong competition from Siqin Gaowa, Rene Liu (Lau Yeuk Ying), Zhang Jingchu and Mo Shun Kwan, Ah Sa honestly says that she has no pressure and would not have too much expectation. "Instead I really want Sister Mo Mo to win. She is a great elder. In working with her she has given me advice. Personally she also taught me about healthy diets and constantly encourages me." SIMPLY has deep meaning behind it and opens up Ah Sa's mind. "In the past I only rely on expression and vocal variation to act. This time with Chim Shui Man's instruction I understood that the importance of body movement in motivating complete involvement. Now I know my place, the future is much clearer." Ah Sa who honestly says that she will spend even more time in film industry development admits that acting is more comfortable than being "Choi Cheuk Yin". "I like to act, where I can demonstrate my inner potential. Normally I either eat or sleep, I am very dull. Insteading acting is much more exciting than the everyday me." As an actress, Ah Sa deeply understands the importance of professionalism and says that when she made WHAT IS A GOOD TEACH she was only an extra with a few lines. Yet she spent an entire night rehearsing it. "When I take a role I have to do it fully. Acting has to be soaked. Actually WAHT was a decent training that made me understand how severe an actor being late was and how people could be eliminated at any moment. Luckily I finally toughed it out, I even got a lunch box at work!" Because she made WHAT Ah Sa became intereted in acting and started her career! Former Asia Pacific Film Festival, Golden Bauhinia, Hundred Flower Film Festival Best Actress Rene Liu (Lau Yeuk Ying) is nominated with KIDNAP (BONG GA). How is her confidence? "I never thought about it. When I act I never think about nomination or award. If I act for awards the pressure would be tremendous. So doing your best feels better." Mo Shun Kwan has been in show business for years. Her acting is beyond any doubt but she has never won a Hong Kong Film Award until 2006 with 2 YOUNG (JO SHOOK) when she won Best Supporting Actress. This year she returns to the battlefield with MR. CINEMA (LO GONG JING JUEN) and a Best Actress nomination. Although Sister Mo is afraid of another disappointment she jokes that she enjoys the feeling of having and losing. "Disappointment is definite but the process before the result is the most important. Today someone feels it's you, you can have a big dream and think about who to thank on stage. Then I think, no, it's not real yet. And then I think, if I don't win it's tragic! This actually is a lot of fun. This year I get to play so I enjoy it. Next year I may not get to play!" Sister Mo feels that Best Actress only needs a scene that leaves a deep impression of the jury. She says about her MR. CINEMA performance, "I like the scene when I get up I say I have to do laundry and have a lot to do. I feel it's very life like and tells the helplessness that many traditional women encountered under chavenism." In recent years Simon Yam Tat Wa has been a frequent nominee but ultimately only brushed by the award. Yet he is not disappointed and feels that the most important part of acting is enjoying the process. When he made EYE IN THE SKY he gained 20 pounds and no one recognized him on the streets. He was able to be free to be a happy, ordinary person. With the EYE IN THE SKY role he is nominated for Best Actor. He gained 20 pounds to play a fat middle age man with a big belly. Yam Tat Wa says that the performance indeed was a huge challenge. "I hd to play a fat person's behavior. To me it's indeed rather hard but I really enjoy the preocess. Because I was so much fatter, no one recognized me. I could very freely play the character in the film and be someone who looks ordinary but isn't." Yam Tat Wa has been nominated numerous times in recent years but ultimately had no luck with awards. However he is not disappointed. "Actually I never paid much attention to the result, I would only properly enjoy the production process. (I have played so many characters, does playing a hero or a villain have more room to display your acting?) I have the hero, the villain and somewhere in between, in my eyes, there is no difference. As long as the screenplay is good I would fully get into character and turn acting into a part of life." In EYE IN THE SKY Yam Tat Wa had many scenes with new comer Kate Tsui Tsz Shan, who he would like to win Best New Actor. Yet he urges Tsz Shan not to relax even if she wins because the award does not represent everything. In addition, Yam Tat Wa picks Siqin Gaowa for Best Actress. Shao Yam Yam's performance in THE PYE-DOG (YEH LEUNG HUEN) has a natural flow and he would like her to win Best Supporting Actress. For Best Actor, any of the nominees would deserve it. Best Supporting Actor also has a lot of talent, with Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, Louis Koo Tin Lok and Chow Yun Fat. Koo Tin Lok would like to win and head for Best Actor while Chow Yun Fat is at the top of his game. Cheung Ka Fai is nominated with EXODUS (CHOOK AI CUP GEI). With his tough guy look and foul mouth he has left a deep impression with the audience. No matter how strong the competition is, Ka Fai believes that he would have a chance. Fat Gor is full of confidence. Ka Fai says, "Fat Gor's POST MODERN LIFE OF MY AUNT character is not the type that I look foward to him playing. If he play the mad characters like in SEVEN or TRAINING DAY then that's different. I really want to see him play more dramatic characters." Ka Fai has never felt any pressure from the nomination. "Wins and losses are no big deal. Film is my lifelong career. In the past with all the nominations and no win I wasn't disillusioned. I feel as long as I get to bet I haven't lost yet. i believe that in my performance life I would have to hit it once!" In the past his wife Esther Kwan Wing Ho would never attend. Ka Fai says, "Perhaps she feels awkward, I think she thinks that I would be unhappy without an award. Actually she would watch the live broadcast at home until after my part, then she would do her own work. Hey, she is a low key person and I can accept that." * (4/11/2008) Elanne Kong Yeuk Lam had a major image breakthrough in HAPPY FUNERAL (LOK LAU HAU JOR 2 GA SUK JEH LAI). Her character is a tomboy who lives with I LOVE U BOYZ and Fama and even changes in front of Donald without any hesitation. She said that before the shoot she wore three tube tops to prevent wardrobe malfunction and showing her bra strap on camera was her most daring performance yet. In the film she had a kiss scene with Law Chung Him, who she has worked with on music videos and the film SEE YOU IN YOU TUBE (OI DAU DAI), but this time was their first intimate contact. She had to lie on top of him. During the shoot they were shaking from being so nervous. * (4/10/2008) Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit) in THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (GONG FU JI WONG) brings to life the Chinese legend of the Monkey King. The make up is so heavy that no one would be able to recognize him. Lee Nin Kit in the film plays a silent monk, one of the 72 transformations of the Monkey King. Although this character only appears in the screenplay for 20 minutes, it is enough to be forgettable for viewers. Lee Nin Kit says, "Playing the Monkey King requires five hours of make up, which completely scared me off! I honestly admit that I was very afraid and almost wanted to quit. I worried the most about how to fight with the make up on." Director Rob Minkoff in order to meet Lee Nin Kit's concerns after several discussions with the make up and costume departments decided to reduce his costume time to three hours. Lee Nin Kit also says, "In my film career I have already made many violent films. I think I should make something for the entire family. I am willing to make THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM because of my two daughters." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 16 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS HONG KONG FILM AWARD: GREAT ATMOSPHERE, LOW RATING This year's Hong Kong Film Award live reaction was great because the pace was intense and most of the guest presenters are local stars. Surprisingly, its average rating was only 24 points and just kept falling. When the final award was presented, it dropped to 20 points. Before the rating came out, the writer has already received complaints that TVB has cut this show too much. TVB handled the Hong Kong Film Award with tape delay instead of live broadcast. This delay broadcast was a hour later than the event. The show started at 7:30PM, TVB started a hour later. Both side agreed on tape delay due to its many benefits. Hong Kong Film Award was in charge of creativity. TVB had no way to control what the guests would say on stage. Any content that could not be aired could be cut in this hour. TVB's programming schedule was very strictly control. The Hong Kong Film Award often went overtime. Delay broadcast could cut the extra part and provide better time control. During a live broadcast, the live audience had to wait several minutes during every commercial period and the atmosphere would chill. The Hong Kong Film Award has attempted special performance during ad time but the result was poor. Tape delay would not pay attention to ad time. The writer sympathized with the live editing crew over the criticism. One hour delay would not be enough time to edit. In the beginning the editing would not be too tight because if the pace picked up later the show would be under run. If the pace was slow and dragged on, then the delay would not be an hour and would become shorter and shorter. It would be like chasing a train. The longer the show ran, the shorter the edit time would be later. With big cuts, the audience naturally could sense the discountinuity; the award winners' speeches would jump around. This explained why the show got worse and worse. This year's result was within expectation, which was also the reason that the latter part had less viewers. As for the star power was not strong enough, honestly, the audience did not know who every award presenter was. Why would they mind? - KWOK HIN CHING 2. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 15 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS ABOUT THE HONG KONG FILM AWARD RESULTS This year's Hong Kong Film Award results seemed very mainstream. The event should be praised for keeping confidentiality well every year because many reports that made predictions were inaccurate. Industry insiders' opinions ultimately differed from the media's. The writer said that the results were mainstream from an industry insider angle. THE WARLORDS (TAU MING JONG) swept eight awards and became the big winner. As expected many technical awards were already in its pockets long ago. The 300 million budget of course helped tremendously with these technical awards. Money was not everything, but with so many industry elites and the resource for them to play with no money would not work. With money alone but inappropriate personnel, the movie could be a mess. THE WARLORDS' overall coordination was great as each aspect's quality was high. Rarely almost every professional position had a Hong Kong person in charge, which proved that Hong Kong people completely had the ability to drive this type of big production and perform better than some movies of the same class. Best Picture was certain. The writer felt that Best Director was between Peter Chan Ho Sun and Ann Hui On Wa. According to past results, the movie with the high average would win Best Picture while Best Director went to the other one unless the competition was very weak. THE POSTMODERN LIFE OF MY AUNT was Hui On Wa's most entertaining film in recent years and it also had great writing, directing and acting. It had the most power to challenge Chan Ho Sun. Best Actor finally went to Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit). The writer felt that if Lau Ching Wan last year did not win, this award would extremely likely fall into his hands. His performance in MAD DETECTIVE (SUN TAM) was more amazing than MY NAME IS FAME (NGOR YIU SING MING), but Lee Nin Kit's THE WARLORDS character truly was performed too well and too real. If Lau Ching Wan did not win last year, based on industry insider's general desire to fulfill his Best Actor dream once they would vote for him in an even match. His dream was fulfilled last year. Lee Nin Kit instead had an edge. Like the Critic Awrad last time went to FEARLESS (FOK YUEN GAP)'s Lee Nin Kit, it naturally was more demanding toward him in THE WARLORDS. - KWOK HIN CHING 3. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 14 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS HONG KONG FILM AWARD HAS A HARD TIME WITH HOST AND GUEST INVITATIONS The Hong Kong Film Award every year gets a headache from inviting hosts and guest presenters. Hong Kong is so small, host talent with stage presence and fast response are the same few people. Hong Kong Film Award has always had a criteria. The person has to be film related, in other words the person has to have made a movie. Similar teams every year lack novelty. The audience would say why are these same few people again? Novelty requires people who rarely or never host before. Just because the event dares to try someoe would be willing to stand up. The Hong Kong Film Award is a volunteer job, without any money. Standing on stage, anyone without any experience truly would be shaking and stuttering. Those who are used to acting would have a empty mind up there. Those who are used to hosting would occasionally have stage fright. One could see how stressful it is. This year the Hong Kong Film Award has an all female host team. Carol Cheng Yui Ling and Sandra Ng Kwan Yu have done it before, but seemingly never on the same stage. Sammi Cheng Sau Man is willing to make an unprecedent new attempt, which is very hard. This team is very strong. The Hong Kong Film Award should make more daring attempts with the host team. This way it would have its own specialty and need not to be like other big shows. Guest presenters are even bigger headaches. Who does not know about inviting guests of caliber to present awards, not only caliber but also lively and humorous. After so may years, anyone who can be invited has been. The presenting teams have already started to repeat. Some question why some people who have never won the Hong Kong Film Award can present. This is a film professional award show. Aside from honoring last year's outstanding film industry professionals and films it also is an event that demonstrates industry unity. More new faces on the stage to present awards should be encouraged. Now when even party elders have to retire for the next generation to take over, the film industry also needs this and accelerate the exchange of the old and the new. New comers should be provided with chances to stand on the stage earlier so they can experience it not only for novelty but also to benefit their future show business work. - KWOK HIN CHING 4. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 13 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS NOT RISING, WHAT TO DO? Being new is hard. Singers in the first two years still can sell freshness. By the third year if they still have not shown any performance from then on they would have a very hard time with rising to stardom. With the poor film market not every veteran has a movie to make, not to mention new comers! Some artists after a few years in the business still feel like new because they have only made two to three records that have not sold well, songs that have not been popular, and no matter how many movies they have made in each one they have only played small roles. Even if they have signed with big companies, where bosses have been willing to make movies to support new comers in the leads, movies ultimately is a business that is more expensive than the cost of records. Thus most of the ovies are low budget. New comers have very slim chances of relying on these movies to be able to firmly play the leads in the future. Artists without box office guarantee would not have very high salaries or very large roles. For a movie, their income might be as low as 30,000. In comparison to the top stars' multiple millions, they are quite far off. Signing with a television station is a decent way out. When new comers become less new and after a few years in the business they still have not risen, joining a television station may still bring a chance for rebound. On the television screen, we often see some artists who have been popular outside or not at all. Some of them are top television series stars. Now joining television is not easy either and even harder for young artists. Television's key audience age has gradually grown older and older. Popular television artists are mostly middle age. Televisio stations have their own new comers every year and not every one can be made into a star. Why would they absorb from outside? On top of that new comers who could not rise outside mostly have not received any performance training. They might not even know how to act. They would need to be trained all over at the television station. Many young people are dreaming of stardom. In their eyes they only see how glorious those top stars are and think that they can be too, but they overlook the large group that has not risen, that is living a hard life and struggling on the edge of elimination. - KWOK HIN CHING 5. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 13 2008, DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT NEEDS INCREASE BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES The month long 4th Annual Hong Kong Entertainment Expo with tonight's Hong Kong Film Award would come to an end. Within it the three founding events and six nucleus events covered the four major territories of film, television, music and digital. Yet, from the Entertainment Expo's development trend so far, one would not have a hard time in discovering that media merger and digital entertainment technology are commonplace, are silently coming new trends and injecting even greater driving force into the Hong Kong film and television entertainment industries. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council service industry expansion's Cheung Suk Fun expressed, the Trade Develpoment Council plays a motivator role in the Hong Kong Entertainment Expo. It is responsible for connecting the government's support with the industry's power to create a cooperative effect and promote Hong Kong as an Asian film, television and entertainment trade center position with several events that involve film, television and entertainment industry in the same month. "The Trade Development Council itself only organizes the Hong Kong International Film and Television Market, co-organizes with other units the Hong Kong Asian Film Financing Forum and the Hong Kong Music Fair. Other organizers include the Hong Kong International Film Festival Association (Hong Kong Film Festival, HAF and the Asian Film Award), Cyberport (the Digital Music Leadership Forum), IFPI Hong Kong (IFPI Hong Kong Record Sales Award), Hong Kong Art Center (Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Competition). We hope after these few years' hard work we are able to get the message out to overseas buyers and industries that this month has many events and can conduct negotiation for the film and television product trade." Filmart Scale Grows In Scale She continues, "For example the 12 year old Filmart this year has had over 4200 buyers and broken past records. Around 500 exhibitors have come from 30 nations and regions, more than half from outside Hong Kong. Mainland, France and other exhibition scales have increased. In addition it have had first time participating regions and returning frequent exhibitor, all of which have proven that no matter Euorpe and America's mature market or newly rising market industries would take this period to participate. Thus the Trade Development Council would try to develop the related development well and make Filmart a multiple region collaboration exchange platform. During the exhibition period of March 17 and 20 we have held over 60 activities and buyer and industry response was overwhelming; according to our consultant company's independent survey result of buyers and exhibitors, 60% felt that Filmart has already become the most important film and television market in Asia." As for the 3rd Annual Hong Kong Music Fari, over 70 companies participated and admission exceeded 7500, a 20% increase from last year. The final day was even open to the public and performance has reache 20. She says, "The Entertainment Expo has covered an enormous range, the advantage of which is buyers or industry organizations can target their own needs and participate in different events. The service level is very far reaching." Adding Cross Media Elements In recent years, the media merger phenomenon is often seen in different layers and areas in the industry. Cheung Suk Fun points out that this trend has always existed, this operation format has already been in place overseas early on. "Some Hong Kong film, television and entertainment groups like Mei Ah, East Asia, Emperor have already at the same time have film, television, music and even artist management businesses; the birth of the Hong Kong Music Fair is actually due to the interactive merger trend in this industry." She expresses, the entire Hong Kong Entertainment Expo will continue to add cross media elements, like this year's Television World, Animation and Digital Entertainment Exhibition Hall, Global Film Production Location -- Asia, Film and Television Equipment and Post Production Service World theme exhibits. "We hope through thorough use of Filmart's resources to provide an 'one stop' service for the entire industry, from HAF's financing to creation, completed products, looking for collaboration, and even post production and equipment. Anything that you can think of has been included. We hope to be able to create even greater results with that." "This year Filmart for the first time has offered its platform to the 1st Annual Hong Kong Mobile Film Festival Award and demonstrated that Filmart has already become a more and more inclusive platform. Like a magnet it has attracted different film, television and entertainmnet industry members to look for development opportunities. Filmart's change has reflected the world's change, from film to music, animation, digital technology, to the television world theme exhibition development and promotion, cross media merger continues to strengthen. Filmart overall would due to future changes add even more new elements." She says. Digital Entertainment Industry Stands Out Due to the digital entertainment industry's outstanding performance in recent years, the Trade Development Council has conducted independent surveys during Filmart and HAF and interviewed exhibitors and buyers from around the world about the new digital entertainment trend. The result has discovered 80% have favorable outlook for the digital entertainment industry future growth. Many also admit that cross media merger can bring the industry even more business opportunities. 74% express that they will in the future three years invest in digital technology development, including production, broadband broadcast and audience interactive technology. Over half will invest on the mobile broadcast platform. Cheung Suk Fun feels, development in this area is optimistic. This year's Filmart Hong Kong Animation and Digital Entertainment Hall has had over 30 Hong Kong companies. Exhibitors from Mainland, the Philippines, Thailand and other areas have also grown in scale. ENTERTAINMENT FORMAT MERGER HAS BECOME THE MAJOR TREND Digital technology's rapid development has not only changed modern lifestyle but also entertainment has been granted new possibilities. Cyberport's Yeung Wai Hung expresses, digital entertainment has raised everyone's quality demand and bring different entertainment platform together to become an even greater industry. Importance of Digital Technology Yeung Wai Hung points out, one of the digital technology major point is the merger of the vitrual and the actual. Currently many have already started to accept virtual world entertainment. If this trend is overlooked it would be very unwise. "Digital entertainment has raised everyone's entertainment quality demand. After entering the high definition age, film and television product quality will be higher and higher. In the digital technology world, different entertaiment formats are also inseparable. It won't be like in the past when film is film and music is music. Different platforms have already merged together. For example a movie may have accompanying games, figures, songs, books; even in Hollywood several billion dollar industry, film box office is only a segment. Othe products' total revenue is greater than the box office." He feels, facing the digital technology development and media merger trend Hong Kong not ony still has to elevate its high definition production quality but also has to consider how to promote inter-industry mutual coordination. "Digital technology use has three levels; production is first, or how to operate digital technology to produce content; then is content management, or how to distribute the related content to industries that are worthy of development; the third level is transmission or how to transmit the content to the general public so they can enjoy this content. In the entire entertainment industry, each segment can make money. The issue is how Hong Kong should connect the different segements together. In the Hollywood model for example, when a movie is distributed, other segment's coordinating products have already been planned." He points out, Hong Kong in industry development is still more traditional and still needs more time. "Currently Hong Kong has to face a global market, for example the film industry is not only facing the Hong Kong box office but the global Chinese box office. As for which operation format is the most effective, that would depend on what kind of collaboration partner Hong Kong finds and how to express content, culture and entertainment element outside special effects." Balace of Technology and Content In recent years, Hong Kong film, television and entertainment industries have encountered many problems in many areas, including the poor market, piracy, audience loss. Would digital technology use be the key to resolve the industry's problems? Yeung Wai Hung points out, the digital technology cost is high, blindly pursuing the highest technology may instead lead to loss. Thus actually the balance between digital technology and story content is the most important, neither can be missing. "Hong Kong in the past has written many stories well, but the special effects and high definitely quality might not necessarily be able to catch up with the development. Digital technology's purpose is to hep the industry through different platforms display content, but the industry itself still needs to strength content because product content must be genereally accepted and liked to be able to make money." "this yearis already Cyberport's fifth year of organizing the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum. In the entire event, we talk not only about technology but also stress content because they are closely connected. The entertainment that viewers ultimately enjoy is content that technology brings to life. You would appreciate the technology but the story content is what truly people get into. Like this year's forum theme is 3D. Actually 3D technology alone has over ten types. Technology is a product, the key is to buy product that is worth its price and being able to use this product to provide even more room to your content to demonstrate its potential." As for the piracy issue that follows digital technology and internet development like a shadow, he feels the government and the film and television industries need to unite and slowly resolve the issue step by step. Yet they should not be too pessimistic about this technology by product because this is a global issue. In addition everything has two sides. The industry should look at the positive side. The faster the media develop the greater the market develops, naturally some negative points would accompany that. Developing Into Digital Base As for whether Hong Kong has the criteria to develop into a digital entertainment base in Asia, Yeung Wai Hung stresses what is special about Hong Kong is this is the East and West cultures exchange place. Because content is culture driven, if Hong Kong can amply use its advantage and experience it can produce products with content that can specifically attract audience in the East and West; secondly, Hong Kong's reaction is rapid in every aspect, which helps the entertainment industry with more variety and drives here to become an important digital entertainment center. He says, "Hong Kong is a service base. Everyone has witnessed Hong Kong's past trade result. In recent years Mainland has started to become an enormous consumer market. Hong Kong has the close proximity advantage and ample understanding of the European and American markets, so the opportunities that it encounters are numerous. Of course, future trade may not necessarily refer to inventory, intellectual property too can be bought and sold. No matter muisc, game, animation and comic book, virtual characters can become trade. Entertainment is a type of cultural property, animation and comic book can create virtual entertainment, actually the advertising industry can be considered a type of entertainment dpending on how Hong Kong uses its mind in the future. Don't think of entertainment just in the traditional sense. With the help of technology, entertainment can have a lot of variation." He expresses, Cyberport has always played the role of catching Hong Kong up to the future trends of digital technology. "We have the best internet foundation and continously push forward our serivce platform, but even more important are our enterprise groups because utlimately able to successful promote the digital industry development is not Cyberport but these enterprise groups. Currently nearly 100 companies are in Cyberport, outside over 100 companies are our partners. We hope to be able to slowly form a staying power, and with as the staying power endures, even more enterprises can benefit." Consumer Demand Differs As for the entertainment format gradually becomes digital and its practical influence on the general public's enjoyment and choice of entertainment, he expresses that would depend on which group is targeted. "I see this world as three generations, the first is called the silent generation. They were the always quiet type. Back then their basic life still could not be completely satisfied and did not have such high demand for entertainment. They were after the feeling that others provide them; the second was the baby boomer, the post war babies started to appreciate and had demand for entertainment; the latest generation is called generation x because no one knows how to describe them. This generation is internet expert, technology has already become a part of life. It is a digital lifestyle generation. They are after a type of lifestyle and want enjoyment in a variety of areas." He continues, "Different people have different entertainment demand, like the new generation is completely unknown and the hardest to grasp. Actually not just entertainment, even the advertisement industry has to take different approaches with different targets. The market that digital entertainment targets depends on consumer spending power. Currently the strongest spending power is still with baby boomers; in addition, different nations' generation distribution is different, thus its people's pursuit of digital lifestyle would be different as well." - TANG YIN YI 6. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 12 2008, JACKIE CHAN AND JET LI SET OFF SPARKS Jackie Chan and Jet Li (Lee Nin Kit)'s international action film THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (GONG FU JI WONG) from start to finish has been kept under wraps to avoid its exciting selling point from exposure too soon. Yet Double J gladly promoted up a storm at the appropriate moment. Both martial art superstars of comparable caliber have hopes for this film. Aside from box office numbers, both have the common ground to create Chinese martial art film new wave. Before the production ended they have already stated that they would like to work together again in a real Chinese gong fu film and eliminate the alternative element that only meet foreign viewer taste Jackie Chan and Lee Nin Kit have known each other for over 20 years and have discussed many opportunities to collaborate. After a quarter century they have finally fulfilled their dream. Elements like screenplay, salary and opportunity were involved, especially role distribution and screen time. Actually many teams of certain caliber at the production start excitedly praised and appreciated each other, but when the wrap was near rumors were endless as friendship was tested. Back then Jackie Chan and Alan Tam Wing Lun worked on ARMOR OF GOD (LUNG HING FU DAI) and ended in unpleasantness. Alan's brethren have once said, "Alan shouldn't accept those Dog King Lun characters long ago!" When they made ARMOR OF GOD Alan and Jackie Chan were top music and movie stars. Both top stars had to make their caliber stand out. The problem was that filmmaking especially action film was ultimately Jackie Chan's storng suit. When he firmly held the banner, the other star had to compromise. That was 20 years ago. Lee Nin Kit honestly said that Jackie Chan was an artist that he admired and he wanted to work with for a long time. His further might would not be fulfilled until after going to Hollywood. Today Jet Li's salary is comparable to Jackie Chan's. Film values quality, generation and worth the most. Double J's pursuit of ame and fortune today has already reached another layer. Conceivably they are intrested in joining forces to explor the martial art hero film market and extend Chinese actor's radiance and brilliance. In THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM they only had one fight scene together to keep the audience wanting more. Two superstars after removing the onscreen hero armor are like all kind father in the world love their children. While their brilliance endure in the show business, they are physically making arrangement for the next generation. Recently Jackie Chan and Jaycee Chan (Fong Cho Ming) appeared in Shanghai as spokesmodels. With Jackie Chan's THE DISCIPLINE on Beijing satellite television, Jackie Chan had a lot to talk about. Fong Cho Ming with his father seemed more like an unemployed big kid. So far in his career the father ane the son have not had much opportunity to work together. In the past he deliberately remained separate from his father and focused on his music. His movies were mainly dramatic and avoided Jackie Chan's gong fu fame. In these few years his hard work has shown result. Even when an action film is offered he would gladly try. Lee Nin Kit had children with his former wife Huang Qiuyin, and two daughter with his current wife Nina Li Chi. The older one is already seven and has natural performance gene. She likes to sing and dance. Reportedly when she sings she has Beauty Li's voice and beauty. In order for his daughters to have excellent education they immigrated to Singapore for a new chapter. Gong Fu kings Double J attract fans not only with their superb martial art but also with their proper care of women, which is also the base of their charisma. - CHOW YI 7. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 12 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH HONG KONG FILM POST PRODUCTION DEVELOPMENT REQUIRES TIME Recently I have discussed with film industry friends about the issue of Hong Kong film post production because the Hong Kong Film Development Council film investment requires the post production to completed in Hong Kong. The film development council allocated 300 million to help small to mid scale film production in order to help Hong Kong film industry development. Not only taking 1/3 of the risk, it also hopes that Hong KOng film professionals can participate even more. Some film professionals feel that Hong Kong post production (including film printing) is behind nearby regions and thus should abandon financial assistance. This ousts post production outside the film industry. The opinion is not widely supported. Thus the film council invested films have the above condition. Many Hong Kong industries drown under elements of land and salary cost, Hong Kong workers or technicians due to high living standard and prices demand more salary than nearby nations. Thus any product creation or modification in Hong KOng is more expensive. Film post production often encounters this issue. In recent years, Hong Kong post production cost actually is not higher than Thailand (main competition) and the facilities have advanced daily. Unfortuantely, big films like THE WARLORDS (TAU MING JONG) did their post production in Thailand. The reason is Thailand land is cheaper than Hong Kong's and salary differs a lot. Their post production is one stop service and does not require going all over the place. Most importantly, the Thai government years ago was determined to develop film post porduction and provided a lot of financial assistance and low pricing to target the Hong Kong market. Finally it stole a lot of business to beocme Asian's post production center. Many Hong Kong production personnel is used to Thai company services (supervisors are all Hong Kong people) and thus goes to Thailand for post production. Can we learn from Thailand and develop Hong Kong film post production industry? First we need to study studio (land), then facilities. Almost everyone thought of Shaw's film city. This 4.8 acre film production center in Tseung Kwan O has already been under construction for over six years. Six to seven film companies joined together to defeat Golden Harvest for the land to build the film city. Unfortunately for some reason all other companies backed up later, leaving only Shaw's to build a very pretty but not fully operational film city with HK$1.4 billion. The largest studio is 20,000 square feet and 20 meters tall. Only Ang Lee's LUST, CAUTION (SIK, GAI) and two foreign films have shot in this film city. Reportedly the film city post production facilities are very complete, but administrative and technical assistance are not considered well coordinated. It is still quite far from "one stop service". Strangely, the service that they provide is very full, including film company offices, studio and post production. Yet the condition is the first look right, perhaps is the reason that no film company has moved in. Whether such a large place and advanced facilities can become Hong Kong post production center under appropriate management, the film council should consider. - TIN LIK 8. TA KUNG PAO, APRIL 12 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION TRAVERSE TVB LOSES TOP SINGERS FOR A REASON Reportedly, after Sammi Cheng Sau Man, Kelly Chen Wai Lam and Gigi Leung Wing Kei, Miriam Yeung Chin Wa will not renew her TVB singer contract either. THis is a clear sign to the top free television station TVB that has under its banner most Hong Kong singers. TVB's monopoly has already been broken. Yeung Chin Wa's reason for not renewing is similar to the other female singers. Even though she has worked hard for TVB, including series, programs, host and even anniversary performance, in the end at the TVB JADE SOLID GOLD award she only received an ordinary award. Program appearance for awards actually has already become an unwritten rule for television that everyone knows. TVB in recent years has fewer and fewer music programs and specials. Singers (especially new comers) for exposure can ony try to meet television's demand, from series, travel program, game show, and even some sponsor special programs. Sometimes due to TVB's needs they would come as soon as it called in hopes of maintaining fame but also for a spot at the TVB JADE SOLID GOLD awards. yet in the ed the result was not just due to naive consideration of substance, or song popularity, or TVB workload, but because demand is greater than supply many unknown haggling decided the result. Naturally people would feel disillusioned. As the Hong Kong music environment change, music and entertainment both are heading to multipurpose and regionalization. Heavenly King class singers like Jacky Cheung Hok Yau and Aaron Kwok Fu Sing's market has already broken out of Hong Kong. Leon Lai Ming has switched to film and behind the scene development and no longer relied on local television exposure promotion. Thus they have not signed TVB contract long ago. In addition, Hong Kong media grow daily. Aside from two free television stations, pay television, broadband television, satellite television, bus television and entertainment site's internet television would become commonplace. With two free television stations' numerous digital channels, singers would have more and more exposure opportunities. Even new comers would be at a disadvantage if they only sign with one station. Not to mention TVB contract is global and all inclusive, which truly has too many gray areas and restrictions for many famous singers' personal career development. If TVB wants to maintain its advantage, the time has come to examine the contract details. - CHUI HIU 9. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 11 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS BREAKING THROUGH SINGER MONOPOLY Another female singer contract came to term and claimed that she would not extend it. TVB's more than 90% local singer monopoly is near collapse. Record companies have started to use another format to deal with TVB. Television's song promotion power is not what it used to be. Singers have switched to rely on television exposure more than promoting their songs. When they participate in TRIO game show they reach more viewers than on JADE SOLID GOLD, which is a fact beyond any doubt. Singers in order to maintain a friendly relationship with the television station must participate in its annual big shows, host programs and even star in series, which to top singers they may lose more than they make. When record sales were high, television program was free promotion; of course it was better than spending money on advertising. Yet as the record market shrank, top singers performed for the television station but their sales were not helped. Instead they benefited the television station. If they could win music awards then the agreement still somewhat held water. If they could ot, they truly would not understand why they would do anything like that. New comers would have no problem with contracts. With television bringing them into people's homes and introducing them to home viewers, they would benefit without any harm. Everyone knows top singers so they would not need anything like that. Top singers focus not on the ordinary music awards. They only want the several major awards. Because of that, naturally the problem of demand overwhelming supply appears. No matter how many awards are added, the largest few awards have the most competition. The writer have said early on that radio and television stations gain benefits from the award game but at the same time tie themselves up. When the record industry was thriving, the issue was not too bad. When the market entered a crisis, the industry and the electronic media relationship certainly turned very intense and failed negotiation would often appear. In the past record companies kept the big picture in mind and would not stand firm against the electronic media over the issue of one or two singers to avoid the entire company being affected. Yet recent situations have been drastically different. We have seen an entire company boycotting a certain award show. Thus all singers of a certain company not renewing television station contracts would not be surprising. Television stations must consider anew their relationships with singers and record companies. - KWOK HIN CHING 10. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 10 2008, FILM WORDS RUN PAPA RUN: CUTE MOB FILM Louis Koo Tin Lok and Rene Liu (Lau Yeuk Ying) after HAPPY BIRTHDAY reunite for RUN PAPA RUN (YUT GOR HO BA BA), which has cute romantic and family love, noble fatherly and motherly love, and full of colorful comic book and dark comedy mob legend film. Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) directs this new film (from Lee Shun Yun's original work) wonderfully uses the female feel to shoot a mob legend about how a Hong Kong mob boss who turns into a good papa. Full and colorful, the first half of the film is lively and funny and the latter halp gradually turns from comedy to tragedy, which is also well thought out but drags its feet a little as it cannot remain happy and funny from the beginning to the end. In the film Wise Guy Koo Tin Lok has three tremendous influence in his life, his mother, wife and daughter. After a long hiatus from the film industry, Nora Miao (Miu Ho Sau) returns with very outstanding portrayal as the mother. She has seen and experienced everything in her clinic and is very bold. Wife Lau Yeuk Ying originally is a lawyer but falls in love at first sight with the tattooed mobster. This couple from first contact to bed, marriage and childbirth all have surprising romantic fun and again demonstrates Cheung Ngai Ga's expertise in handling romantic comedy. The most powerful is the daughter who is irresisible to the male lead since childhood and fills him with fatherly love. This mob boss for her also wants to change for good, to work for education, to change from worshipping Lord Guan to Jesus Christ. Is his beloved daughter the jinx or savior of his life? RUN PAPA RUN is also a history of Hong Kong mob transformation. The male lead from the risk taking era of young thug to the family man boss in a suit and finally the Godfather in middle age. Ultimately he has a hard time with shaking off the mob war and also has to face an ailing aging mother, marital crisis and the growth of his daughter. The drama involves many layers, co-stars also are from several generations, as well as police and mob feud and church confession. However, too much material makes keeping track hard. The story grows heavier and heavier as the second half is not as wonderfuly as the first half and drags on too long. Actually the male lead always hiding his mob background from his daughter is a little much. Basically, mob films often focus on family relationship. Some "ordinary" parents instead would not pay too much attention to their children. This film's male lead transformation for good can also be comic, now it is just troublesome with mixed emotions. Luckily the film has a lot of positive points. Most characters are interesting. Koo Tin Lok, Lau Yeuk Ying and Miu Ho Sau all play well. The daughter is cute when she is little. Her teenage years are just ordinary. The entire film is not ideal either, but Cheung Ngai Ga's use of female emotions to "affect" the male mob world indeed is unique. - SHEK KEI (http://www.cultureshot.net/ssekkeiluklei) 11. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 10 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS GENERAL MASSES MOOD AFFECTS RATING SUPER TRIO SUPREME (TEET GAP MO DIK JEUNG MOON YUN) was last week's rating champion with an average 33 point rating and 2.081 million viewers. D.I.E. (GOO LING JING TAM) dropped one point to the same average 33 points but only with 2.057 million viewers. The Ching Ming holiday might have something to do with that. One of the two top rated programs is a game show and the other a television series. What do they have in common? Both make viewers chuckle. D.I.E. actually is not too funny, but light and cute. Viewers are already satisfied. Truly brings belly laugh is SUPER TRIO SUPREME. Viewers are truly rolling on the floor with laughter when they watch a group of artists serious at play and hosts take jabs at them. It is one of the television programs that would provide rare laughter every time. That type of programs' high rating of course represents what viewers love to watch, but also reflects the general masses' common mood at the time. Earlier series were not comedy so their rating was a little lower. Situation comedy BEST SELLING SECRETS (TUNG SI SAM FUN CHUN) was the weekday rating champion at that time, even higher than other two series. Very clearly they have told television stations viewers would like to relax with television. Some would say that comedy and funny game shows would have good rating at any time. Even so, other genre series have already created high rating. We can only say that comedy has steadier rating than other genres. However, some comedy series truly have average rating of 20 something. The writer wants to say that social situation and the general mood would affect television program rating. Both have a close correlation. Stock market turbulence, high inflation, right now the people of Hong Kong are unhappy so they need more joy from television. Anyone who is interested in research can take a look whether long drama of love and hate and major emotional storms is especially popular when the economy is good and the society is stable. - KWOK HIN CHING [ In Production Now/Soon ] STORM RIDERS II Can : Fung Won II Lit : Wind Cloud II d. DO NOT MISTAKE TEMPTATION FOR OPPORTUNITY Ah, fortune cookies -- how can a little after meal treat for those of us who are too cheap to get dessert bring so much wisdom? Not only does it provide lotto numbers for the indecisive, occasionally it even brings a moment of clarity. For example, this week's column title came from a fortune cookie. Words to live by, or at least to remember in life, especially when like Your Chaffing Editor you are upside down in a bar and wondering how you got there in the first place. About two weeks ago, Your Chaffing Editor ran across the Village Voice gossip column, which he usually ignored. The difference this time was it was about Ellen Page, the star of JUNO, his favorite movie last year. The column cited a Canadian magazine's supposed "outing" of our little Kitty Pryde. At the risk of sounding hypocritical, so what if she is or she is not? There are so many starf'ers out there who are starving for attention (see the popularity of Myspace), but Ellen Page does not seem to be one of them. Why not leave her alone and let her ruin her career on her own? Oh yeah, being in a movie titled SMART PEOPLE is not typecasting. Would someone please give the poor girl Natalie Portman's number? http://feeds.villagevoice.com/~r/most/current/~3/262264483/0814,a-real-page-turner,396260,2.html Jer Jer Stinks, Your Chaffing Editor Top Ten Central --- [ WHAT IS YOUR CHAFFING EDITOR LISTENING TO ] I'M IN LOVE WITH A GIRL Gavin DeGraw youtube.com/watch?v=ftZ0jpYdn70 So many people gonna say that they want you, To try to get you thinking they really care, But there's nothing like the warmth of the one who has put in the time and you know he's gonna be there, Back your border when she knows someone crossed it, Don't let nobody put you down, who your with Take the pain of protecting your name, from the crutch to the cane to the highwire I'm in love with a girl who knows me better, Fell for the women just when i met her, Took my sweet time when i was bitter, Someone understands, And she knows how to treat a fella right, Give me that feeling every night, Wants to make love when i wanna fight, Now someone understand me, I'm in love with a girl(I'm in love with)(x2) Out the many broken backdoors and windows, Through the valley of the love of the lost, Is a hole that is cut through the souls falling down from the thrones without leaving any windows, But you drown in a piece for the moment, The moment was over in time, Then its gone the hit and run the tactless one has a short life I'm in love with a girl who knows me better, Fell for the women just when i met her, Took my sweet time when i was bitter, Someone understands, And she knows how to treat a fella right, Give me that feeling every night, Wants to make love when i wanna fight, Now someone understand me, I'm in love with a girl(I'm in love with)(x2) Gonna tell you what you do to think you practice what you preach, Now i know there's nothing we cant reach, 'cause the heart can't erase once it finds a place to be warm and welcome, To be held in shelter I'm in love with a girl who knows me better, Fell for the women just when i met her Took my sweet time when i was bitter Someone understands, And she knows how to treat a fella right Give me that feeling every night Wants to make love when i wanna fight Now someone understands me I'm in love with a girl(I'm in love with)(x3) Who knows me better Wants to make love when i wanna fight now someone understand me ---------------------- HK Top Ten Central hktopten@hotmail.com | http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/2038
