In over 20 years under his pen name Chow Yin he wrote over 30 scripts like WOMEN APARTMENT, RED LANTERN and GENTLEMAN OF THE PILLAR. 2. MISCELLANEOUS * (4/2/2008) Chow Yun Fat two nights ago continued to promote ESCAPE FROM HUANGSHI in Huangshi, Wuhan and attended the film's charity event with stars like Michael Kong Leung, Li Bingbing and Bibi Zhou Bichang. The event had several hundred uniform police and security guards as well as police dogs to protect Fat Gor. While everyone screamed for Fat Gor, the event arranged child actor asked him, "Uncle Fat!" Fat Gor first pretended to be embarrassed and then laughed, "You are just 8, I am 20 years older than you, I am really old." Then another child called him "Elder Uncle Chow". Fat Gor smartly pretended not to heard then asked himsef, "Who is Elder Uncle Chow?" The event originally arranged a private meal for director Roger Spottiswoode and Fat Gor, but Li Bingbing came uninvited. She finally was able to get a picture with Fat Gor and Fat Soh. Fat Soh meanwhile has arranged for a masseur so Fat Gor could properly rest after work. However that masseur immediately cried out of excitement as soon as he saw the superstar and Fat Gor was stunned on the spot. * (4/1/2008) Kelly Chen Wai Lam lately has been promoting THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS (GONG SAN MEI YUN) nonstop. After Mainland, Taiwan and Singapore she and Leon Lai Ming attended the Seoul, Korea press conference, met with fans and accepted local media interviews. On the day after the press conference they accepted several dozen local media interviews. A reporter said that the most impression was Kelly's back baring scene. Kelly said, "I already have taken the full caution and definitely wouldn't have any wardrobe malfunction. At the time the set was clear, but manager (Claudie) Chung Chun was very nervous and kept looking around for hidden cameras." Lai Ming said, "Chung Chun was as nervous as she wasn't wearing clothes herself. Instead Kelly wasn't worried at all." * (4/1/2008) ESCAPE FROM HUANGSHI earlier held a press conference at Huangshi, Hubei, one of the leads Chow Yun Fat attended with his wife Jasmine. However, Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King), Jonathan Rhys-Myer and Radha Mitchell did not attend due to other work. Only Fat Gor and director Roger Spottiswoode appeared. However, Fat Gor's charisma was amazing as over hundred media outlets covered the event. To honor Fat Gor's charity contribution and his work in Huangshi, after the press conference he was invited to a stadium to accept a good citizenship award from the Huangshi city government. The always humorous Fat Gor showed his true color at the press conference. Fat Gor put his eight year old co-star on his lap during the interview and asked whether he wanted to be an actor, a successful actor, an actor who is more successful than him? The boy expressed that he would like to be more successful than Chow Yun Fat and the entire venue laughed. Fat Gor and Radha Mitchell's kiss scene was cut, which the media asked about. The director saw how awkward the situation was and immediately explained that Fat Gor's expression was too sexy in it. He did not want the audience to focus on that kiss scene and could only cut it. * (4/1/2008) Sundream Pictures' THREE KINGDOMS RESURRECTION OF THE DRAGON has been in preparation for years. Director Daniel Lee Yan Kong faced many difficulties during the process. He said, "Because the audience already knows how many battles in the Three Kingdoms story turn out, we have to put some thought into the scene design to be able to attract the audience attention." TO make the battle scenes even more memorable and more unique, the director designed a masked battle. Playing Zhao Zilong Andy Lau Tak Wa said that one of the scenes was unforgettable. "That scene took place under rain and thunder, I had to wear a very terrifying mask on horse back to battle the enemies. Because of the rain water, the mask moved as soon as I put it on. Finally I couldn't see the road most of the time. I had to guess the enemies' positions. It was truly very dangerous." Did he consider using a stunt double? Wa Jai answered, "Because I wasn't using a stunt double that scene was so memorable." He also said that in another scene he rode a horse to the cannon platform. He at the time saw several thousands horses and tens of thousands of soldiers. Even the horse did not dare to proceed, every step was a thrill. * (3/31/2008) Manager Mani Fok Man Hei attended Sherman Chung Shu Man's CASTLE autograph session. Earlier Twins were rumored to be breaking up. When asked after Gillian Chung Yun Tung's studies would she appear as a part of Twins, Mani said, "After studying she would continue to be Twins. Movies wise she and Ah Sa (Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin) would separate more." Mani revealed that Ah Gil was working on hard on her acting, dancing and singing. Mani revealed that Ah Gil has received foreign film offers. She also admitted that Ah Gil had the potential to head to Hollywood like Isabella Leong Lok Si. * (3/31/2008) Most recently the still pending "Mrs. V" drug rape case has attracted public attention. Yesterday a magazine claimed that Wong Jing was interested in making a movie about the subject and considered using this film to push new comer Meng Yao as the lead. Yesterday Wong Jing issued a statement and clarified that he has not accepted that magazine's interview, not considered making thi movie and would reserve all legal rights to pursue the matter. * (3/30/2008) Karena Lam Ka Yun yesterday attended the premiere of her new film CANDY RAIN with Cyndi Wang (Wong Sum Ling) at the Cultural Center. Ka Yun in the film played a lesbian for the first time. Yesterday she watched the film for the first time so she was somewhat nervous. She said, "In the film I had to kiss three girls. During the shoot I didn't feel the passion and only thought it went very smoothly. The co-stars were very generous." As for the three co-stars, one was a singer and two were models. Because they did not hae any performance experience Ka Yun had to take the initiative. She did not feel awkward though and thought that working with girls were more relaxed. Ka Yun also had to work on the post production of FA FEI FA. She expressed that in the future she would be more selective with screenplays. Because she liked film too much she did not want to treat it as a tool to make a living from. Like Maggie Cheung Man Yuk has said she would rather cook then make rotten films, because accumulating life experience would be very helpful to acting. Wong Sum Ling honestly said that the kiss scene with Ka Yun was a little awkward and took two takes. Earlier she has had kiss scenes with guys. She thought girls' lips were softer, perhaps due to all the lip moisturizer that they used. She honestly said that she was a little shy during the kiss, but she saw how professional Ka Yun was and she dared not to be shy anymore. * (3/29/2008) Karen Mok Man Wai who her unique aura and fluency in many languages has signed with CAA. Currently CAA is negotiating several Hollywood films for her. At the same time two of her films MAI GOR and COFFIN will be released this year. She is also planning to star and produce a movie. * (3/29/2008) Vaness Wu (Ng Kin Ho) and Bernice Liu Bik Yi yesterday judged a Nike Women dance contest. Ng Kin Ho recently invested in a production company Smash and Grab and planned to produce his first rock movie in August. He would play a singer. The director would be Sammo Hung Kam Bo's son Hung Tin Cheung. He said that he would like to work with many actresses but they might not be able to coordinate. For now no lead actress has been confirmed. Currently he has started rehearsing rock music. Later he would shoot in Taiwan and the U.S. * (3/28/2008) THREE KINGDOMS RESURRECTION OF THE DRAGON (SAM GOK ji GEIN LUNG SEH GAP) two nights ago held its premiere. Andy Lau Tak Wa, Andy On Chi Kit and director Daniel Lee Yan Kong attended. The other lead Sammo Hung Kam Bo was absent due to illness. Wa Jai earlier took some time off. Two nights ago at the premiere he was asked whether he was very relaxed. He said, "OK!" He expressed that earlier he took a month off, now he is busy with the promotion. Wa Jai revealed that lately he has been in negotiation for a romantic comedy. He said that the movies before were too heavy and he would like to make some lighter fare. Were costume action films too tough? Wa Jai admitted that he would like to take a break. Earlier he was in negotiation with a Chinese Japanese co-produciton about Zheng Chenggong. In it he would play a soldier under Zheng Chenggong. Originally it would start production this year but because it was another costume film now it has been postponed until June 2009. THREE's Korean premiere reaction was great, which Wa Jai honestly said that he was very happy about. As for a sequel, Wa Jai joked that how would Zhao Zilong have a sequel. A prequel would need him even less because he started in this film at the age of 20. This film only omitted Zhao Zilong's love. Wa Jai expressed that during the shoot the sandstorm was very strong. Later he had two months worth of facial treatment. He joked, "If you realize that I am old then I am done for." On Chi Kit expressed, the weather during the shoot was very tough. With his five pound armor, halbred and other weapons he felt very heavy. So far he has lost 17 pounds. Earlier when he made MAD DETECTIVE (SUN TAM) and INVISIBLE TARGET (NAM YI BOON SIK) he was so busy that he did not sleep for three days. He looked very swollen. Now he looked thin. Reportedly Theresa Fu Wing originally took the role in the Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung) directed CITY WITHOUT BASEBALL (MO YEH JI SING) but because she was unwilling to perform topless she turned it down. Film investors have criticized Theresa as a slave to her management and pointed out that she should have had better development. Theresa expressed that before the shoot her company has spoken with the film company. Because they could not reach any agreement in the end she did not work on the film. She said that the company was clear on no nudity, but the details were unknown because they took place early last year. She disagreed that she was manager Paco Wong's slave. She felt that the company had a high level of freedom as she was in charge of her own record and book release. Paco Wong agreed to her pictorial collection this year right away. Nothing was as exaggerated as the reports claimed. * (3/28/2008) The 32nd Annual Hong Kong International Film Festival award ceremony took place last night at the Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Center. Many directors including Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga), Johnnie To Kei Fung, Gu Changwei and Wang Xiaoshuai attended. Cheung Ngai Ga was a guest presenter at the Three Annual Fresh Wave Short Film Competition. She has met with the participants and praised their talent. She never would have guessed that in an environment like Hong KOng such performance could be achieved. She was optimistic about the future of the Hong Kong film industry. Mainland director Wang Xiaoshuai directed IN LOVE WE TRUST two nights ago held its Asian premiere. Reportedly this film due to its intent could not be released in Mainland. Cheung Nga Ga has spoken with Wang Xiaoshuai about this and learned that the film has already been inspected. She believed that now is only a passing period and felt that fillmaking ultimately cannot adjust to certain restrictions. Wang Xiaoshuai expressed that IN LOVE WE TRUST will be released on April 1. The film could not make the March 8 Women's Day release, which disappointed him somewaht. He felt that this slot was even more suitable. Did he feel that he suffered at the hands of the Tang Wei incident? He said that they were not related. Ah To showed his support two nights ago and felt that the Hong Kong Film Festival had more participants than the first year. Earlier a stuntman was accidentally injured while making RUNNING ON KARMA (DAI JET LO) and recently has sued Milky Way Image for 6 million. To Kei Fung said that the case was underway so he could not talk much about it. Would he make less action films? He said, "With less action, no one would have a job!" * (3/28/2008) Simon Yam Tat Wa, Julian Cheung Chi Lam and Kathy Chow Man Kei two nights ago attended a mobile phone event. Cheung Chi Lam lately has been working on the film DONG TIN SI OI SEUNG HEI JI GUK (WHEN ANGEL FALLS FOR HITCHCOCK), in which he plays twin brothers and a couple with Yan Ng Yat Yin. He joked about their age difference. "She indeed is the youngest actress who I have worked with. Even with the age difference our looks don't show that. In addition we even have great communication. We even have a kiss scene, but no bed scene though." Would he ask for bed scene? "This is a drama, which is not necessary. (Do you need your wife's approval for kiss scene?) No, she understands that anything that happens in a film is a part of the performance. * (3/28/2008) A magazine's top ten spokesmodel 2008 award ceremony took place yesterday. Most winners were absent except for Ronald Cheng Chung Kei, Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau), Paco Wong and Mani Fok Man Hei. Ronald currently is working on a screenplay in preparation for his next film as a director. He expressed that he has not planned on casting Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin, but with a suitable character he would. Ronald directly said that he has consoled her in light of recent report that Ah Sa has lost a lot of weight due to stress. "I think the stress isn't too much, she has always been thin. (Did you cheer her up with jokes?) No! We only had a normal chat." Mani said that Ah Sa was only fat when she first started, from then on no matter how much she ate she could not get fat. "She is used to working as a duo, now she is more nervous as she is alone on stage! Later she will work on two movies and can appear in public less. Her stress comes from the media." Mani clarified that Gillian Chung Yun Tung was studying instead of having fun abroad with Juno Mak Chun Lung as reported. This was a great chance to study and a turning point in her life. "I am very confident in her future and work!" She also appreciated some directors' support of Ah Gil and hoped that she would catch up to Ah Sa in movies from now on. * (3/28/2008) Louis Koo Tin Lok in GQ Hong Kong's April issue talked about the Sylvia Chang (Cheung Ngai Ga) directed, Rene Liu (Lau Yeuk Ying) starred RUN PAPA RUN (YUT GOR HO BABA). He expressed that in the film he played from youth to fatherhood. His relationship with Lau Yeuk Ying also went from boyfriend and girlfriend to a married couple. Sometimes they had to switch identities throughout the day's shoots. He directly said that he had a little personality split. Goo Jai loved acting. "I really like this job. I have never thought how to play the role well, I just rely on my instinct. Someone has asked me whether playing a father this time would be stressful. I feel that thinking too much is pointless. I only continue to grow in characters that I have played. More experience can only make my grasp better. This is also a path that I enjoy in life." * (3/27/2008) The film ESCAPE FROM HUANGSHI two nights ago held a premiere. Earlier rumored to be upset at being a "supporting star" and thus absent from the promotion, Michelle Yeoh (Yeung Chi King) did not appear as only Chow Yun Fat held the fort. Fat Gor joked that he too was a "supporting star". He believed that Yeung Chi King would not be upset at being a "supporting star" and not promote. After working in Mexico for two months he joked that he skipped out and never saw the "obscene photos". Because lately he had to train in martial art he had to be abstinent and could look at thme even less. Fat Gor and Fat Soh attended the premiere but Yeung Chi King and Jonathan Rhys-Myers did not. Fat Gor said that both were workig. He joked that this way his thunder was safe in tact as he would have the opportunity to "fill in the gaps". He said, in the film actually he and Yeung Chi King were both "supporting stars". Only he did not know which was the "big support". Did he charge a "supporting star" rate? Fat Gor said that the question should be addressed to Fat Soh. ESCAPE FROM HUANGSHI will be released at the same time as Leon Lai Ming's THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS (GONG SAN MEI YUN) and Andy Lau Tak Wa's THREE KINGDOMS RESURRECTION OF THE DRAGON. Fat Gor looked upon his opponents favorably and would like to take time to show his support. Fat Gor with POSTMODERN LIFE OF MY AUNT received his first Hong Kong Film Award Best Supporting Actor nomination. He joked that he was truly very nervous and was so happy that he could not sleep. Since he was a new comer to supporting actor he really wanted the award. He would bet on himself to win. He also picked Siqin Gaowa and Lau Ching Wa for Best Actress and Best Actor, and Shao Yam Yam for Best Supporting Actress. He picked THE WARLORDS for Best Picture but supported Ann Hui On Wa for Best Director. Fat Gor also said that the Best Screenplay should go to AUNT because THE WARLORDS had eight screenwriters. Eight awards would cost too much. Fat Gor also pointed out that earlier Korean film SECRET SUNSHINE swept many major awards at the Asian Film Award. He would like the Hong Kong Film Award to be more "evenly divided". Sunday Fat Gor would attend the Huangshi premier with the film's director and Yeung Chi King. Fat Gor would receive the city's Good Citizenship certificate. Later he and Gong Li would work on SHANGHAI. Because of screenplay inspection issue, the shoot would take place in Thailand. Reportedly STORM RIDERS 2 would also shoot there. He joked that he could get Ekin, Aaron Kwok Fu Sing and Nicholas Tse Ting Fung to make SHANGHAI STORM RIDERS. He would also work on a new film with Johnnie To Kei Fung and Kong Chi Keung's company. [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 2 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS THE AUDIENCE APPEARS TO HAVE "ARMOR EXHAUSTION" Many viewers may already have "armor exhaustion". After THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS (GONG SAN MEI YUN), THREE KINGDOMS RESURRECTION OF THE DRAGON (SAM GOK GEIN LUNG SEH GAP) tightly follows. The fairy tale style THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS made 60 million in Mainland but only around 7 million in Hong Kong. The distance was rather far. The tree Hong Kong stars Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Kelly Chen Wai Lam and Leon Lai Ming starred THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS may not have a Cantonese version. The writer watched the Mandarin version. Other friends who went to the movies also saw the Mandarin version. CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG 7 HOR) was criticized as Mainland driven. During its Hong Kong release it still had a Cantonese dubbed version. THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS did not even post any notice in the newspaper ads. No one I know saw the Cantonese version in the cinema, perhaps it truly did not exist. From the difference in the two lands' box office, this type of classic war epic's primary market truly is not Hong Kong. Local viewers can very quickly adapt to Chinese films without Cantonese. Perhaps some viewers have long been used to them. If Mainland stars' parts are heavy and the Hong Kong stars can also speak fluent Putonghua, the Mandarin version truly may be better. If one speaks Cantonese and the other Putonghua during the live sound recording, theoretically the entire scene would need to be dubbed again to be able to maintain uniform sense of space. Most Mainland actors have received official acting training, with better usage of their voices than Hong Kong stars. When dubbed in Cantonese they would lose a lot of luster. Hong Kong stars now often make money in Mainland, their Putonghua should be well spoken. Even some with not so high language learning ability would very quickly master it with hard work. Putonghua live sound recording is the major trend in Mainland film productions. Costume films' post production dubbing would not be too hindering. If modern films are trendy, the dialogue must have a life feel. In the future only local Hong Kong films would be mainly Cantonese. If the Guangdong province film market further opens then it still has a future. Local Hong Kong films like L FOR LOVE L FOR LIES (NGOR DIK JUI OI) has higher box office than THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS, which proves that local audience has demand. - KWOK HIN CHING 2. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 1 2008, FILM WORDS TWO OPPOSITE TIN SHUI WAI MOVIES At the Hong Kong International Film Festival I saw two Hong Kong films about Tin Shui Wai, THE WAY WE ARE (TIN SHUI WAI DIK YUT YU YEH) and BESIEGED CITY (WAI SING). One is bright while the other dark, each with its own fun and together they make a strong contrast. Yet they also make Tin Shui Wai into RASHOMON as the audience has no idea what the truth is. In recent years Tin Shui Wai has had many tragic events and become a local news focus, yet some feel that the media have excessively accentuated the tragedies. Ann Hui On Wa's new film THE WAY WE ARE is just the opposite as it focuses on humanity in this world. It can be called "good people and events of Tin Shui Wai". In the film the middle age mother (Bau Hei Jing) who works in a supermarket lives with her son (Leung Chun Lung) who is waiting for the HKCEE results. Mama is very hard work and kind hearted as she constantly helps an old woman who lives alone in the neighborhood; the son looks lazy but actually is very nice and gentle. He often visits his grandmother who is hospitalized and even obediently helps with chores without any complaint. This film is like a life diary. Without cooking up drama, it captures ordinary household chores and minor incidents between family, friends and classmates. The most interesting is the son's question and answer at church, the most touching is when Mama accompanies the lonely old woman to visit her relatives. In the end the Mid Autumn Festival scene is also very sentimental. Bau Hei Jing and Leung Chun Lung both perform very natural and intimate, truly they are good mother and son. However the entire film is just ordinary and lacks plot. It also makes Tin Shui Wai look very orderly and beautiful. Does this new satellite city have any problem at all? Reportedly Tin Shui Wai's new immigrant family problems have had Hui On Wa's attention long ago and she has done a lot of research, yet she had a hard time with the production start. Now she makes one with family warmth and kindness, does not mention new immigrants. No one knows when the original one would be completed. The Lawrence Ah Mon (Lau Kwok Cheung) directed BESIEGED CITY is also a documentary style fiction but takes the other extreme. It dramatically describes a family incest tragedy and the survival of the fittest at school, which lead to a group of young people leaving home, rebeling, going on a crime spree and even falling into a gang war. BESIEGED CITY is like hell on earth, actually it is similar to Lau Kwok Cheung's first film GANGS (TUNG DONG) twenty years ago but even darker and crueler. However it also is exaggeratingly cooked up and only uses Tin Shui Wai as its backdrop. The film festival also premiered the Lawrence Ah Mon and Scud (Wan Yu) co-directed CITY WITHOUT BASEBALL (MO YEH JI SING), with the Hong Kong baseball team representatives and Taiwan coach personally performing several stories between training and games. Their performance is very lively and the film has many wonderful and interesting details. This film is worthy of attention and this baseball team is worthy of support. However the film likes to shoot male nudity more than officially introduce baseball, which seems a little strange. - SHEK KEI (http://www.cultureshot.net/sekkkeiluklei) 3. MING PAO DAILY, APRIL 1 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS MISSING LESLIE CHEUNG KWOK WING Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing has passed away for five years. Every year memorial events would take place for him. This year two Hong Kong Coliseum concerts took place. Organizer Chan Suk Fun says, the original idea was to wait for tenth anniversary but show business had many unexpected events that they were moved up. Cheung Kwok Wing fans from all over Asia show a rare unity. In comparsion to top stars of the same period, he indeed has even more mesmerizing parts. Even though his sexual orientation remained mysterious, he still was a lead actor who could not be missed in movies. When viewers watched movies they could still enter his romance with the lead actress, which was something that other male stars with questionable sexual orientation could not achieve. He had an unique elegance that made women mad, whether he liked men or women. Industry insiders often say that nowadays star lack star quality. When they have no way to explain what star quality is, they would cite Cheung Kwok Wing as an example. He indeed was the best example, with the quality that stars need. Cheung Kwok Wing absolutely was not the elegance beyond any reach. He was the friendliest. Anyone who has worked with him has said that he had no arrogance at all and really kept others in mind. He never brought any trouble, not the type that became arrogant with success. The industry indeed has many of the type, with the sudden success arrogance. If Cheung Kwok Wing did not pass, today he stil would remain a bright star. Perhaps he would already become an internationally renown director and still the singer who everyone likes. Some say that the later years of someone as legendary as he was would be hard to imagine. Vanishing like a comet instead made people miss him more. People who liked him, no matter what, would feel that he passed too soon and too suddenly. Among music, film and television new comers in show business, male or female, no one has Cheung Kwok Wing's charisma. Entertainment reports often refer to certain new comers as certain stars' successors. Cheung Kwok Wing has none. He is the only one. - KWOK HIN CHING 4. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 30 2008, MEI AH GAUGES TIME AND TREND WITHOUT FEAR OF IMPACT No matter how great the competition in the television industry is, certainly each medium's content demand would only increase. Mei Ah Entertainment chief Tong Hing Chi expresses that Mei Ah is a content investor and owner. Its focus is not on hardware development. To them, media and television channel increases mean the entire "pie" is even larger and investors' return would have even more guarantee. Media Flood Even More Beneficial Mei Ah's Brilliant Idea Group has planned to make 100 films in five years, completely without any fear that the film industry depressed market and television technology developmet would pull viewers from cinemas to television. Tong Hing Chi points out that although digital broadcasting has increased visual, audio and reception quality, film mainly is content. Cinema is only a medium. In the past film reveue relies 100% on cinemas but as tehcnology improves film broadcast channels would row. Viewers instead would have even more opportunities to come in contact with film. The entire "pie" actually has become even greater. "When we make movie we mainly look at content. The larger 'pie' to investors would provide even more protection for return." He stresses, Mei Ah's business focuses on content thus it can stand firmly in the market. "Earlier we sold film productions and archives to free television, then we opened a movie channel on Cable and also sold films to them. From pay television we further developed to iPayTV, as well as our plan to develop a direct to home channel in Japan. As I have said with more channels, our opportunities at the same time increase. While investing on our porduction and buying film archives, we wouldn't study technology development. We would only walk in its direction; as in the past we distributed video, then we developed to LD, VCD and DVD. This year we will start to release blu-ray DVD and arrange old programming anew or add packaging to it." "As a content copyright owner, we feel that the flood of new media only means that some revenue may flow from A to B then from B to C, but overall we remain optimistic. Revenue paths from software would only grow." Currently, Mei Ah television is operating two movies channels and a television series channel, which he says are all the results of the group knowing to follow trends. "If at the time we sold all of Mei Ah productions or film licenses that we have purchased, today we can't possibly open a television channel. If we have to buy films from outside back, the investment amount would have rather enormous. In addition the market wouldn't definitely have so many movies, but 6 to 7 years ago we have already seen the television development trend. Thus strategically we would reserve some films and regions, which we called 'film storage'. Now our archive has over 600 films and the number will continue to increase. If the market has a suitable archive, we will attempt to buy it." Border Crossing Development Gradually Becomes More General Most recently, Mei Ah television through Asia Pacific Media opened the first Japanese subtitled Chinese film and television channel in Japan and also established Brilliant Idea Group Stars artist management agency. Tong Hing Chi admits, different entertainment format and region merger are inevitable. "Entertainment business' borders will become blurred or even be broken through. Now artists work in music, film and television all at once, we feel entertainment should be seen as one. As for region merger, in the short run it should be a trend. In the long run, if technology continues to develop, one day a channel may be able to cover the entire world." He reveals, aside from Japan, the group is also working hard to explore the Southeast Asia market. He is confident that within this year opportunities will arise to open another channel in other regions. 5. MING PAO DAILY, MARCH 29 2008, FILM WORDS INDESCRIBLY TOUCHING Yoji Yamada's KABEE OUR MOTHER and Mike Nichols' CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR may be two movies that have nothing to do with each other, but to me both have given me the greatest joy in common -- watching how two veteran directors (both were born in 1931, 77 this year. Yamada is two months older than Nichols and started in film five years earlier) tell an epic story of half a lifetime of joy, sorrow, union and parting, or display the agenda ridden political battle and the actual battlefield in a light hearted manner. They appear to be in control with the greatest of ease, but actually they have given their all to every stroke and every shot without anyone detecting their presence. One of veteran directors' specialty is the fondness for studio sets. Aside from inheriting it from the studio standard (although they started in the turbulent, revolutionary 60s), I think an even bigger reason is their understanding of the idea of "film art". (If you do not admit that film is an art, please turn a page) Any type of artistic creativity comes from the creator's exploration or interpretation of reality (or the real world). The reality that is shown in his or her work is the result of processing/filtering after cautious selections, a type of representation of reality and not reality itself. Film due to the merger of sight and sound has a relationship with the real world, one that is more intimate than any other creative format. Thus people (including the creator and the audience) can easily misunderstand that "film is a recreation/reenactment/simulation of the real world". This incorrect idea in today's video overloaded digital age shatters even wider, especially with the appearance of economic yet light photographic equipment like digital video (thus came the idea "Anyone can make a movie"). The advantage of the studio standard, first without the standard part, is it requires creators (here not only referring ot directors but also each creative department) through his or her sharp sense of observation to recreate (here including an all new interpretated meaning, re-present) reality. Thus, how KABEE's full intimacy and excruciating details uses elements like set decorations, prop placements, costumes, make up, lighting, color, cinematography, sound, music to display character, geographic, era, seasonal changes, passing and transformations to support the charater's emotional upheaval and psychological (biological) changes would make you feel touched by their delicacy, intricacy and care. (After all, care is a necessary condition of art.) This is not something that a director alone can do, but the contribution of each department under his extreme involvement, concentration and influence. - SHU KEI 6. MING PAO DAILY, MARCH 29 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS CULTIVATE NEW COMMERCIAL FILM DIRECTORS In recent years new directors have been few, even fewer can make commerical films. For the first film, who would provide you with big stars and high budgets? When the road gets easier later, new directors mostly would take the non commercial road. Another reason is commerical films are harder to grasp than non commercial films. If not well made, people would look down upon you worse than a poorly made art film. How hard is commercial film to make? Even someone as experienced as Johnnie To Kei Fung has said that he perhaps has already grasped how to make a movie for a film festival, but he still has not grasped how to make a movie that definitely makes money. Many non commercial directors disagree. They may feel that they would only make commercial films if they have no way out. Some regions with long term film industry depressions like Taiwan still have many art film directors but they do not help film development. For art film directors to switch to make commercial entertainment films, successful examples have been rare. When the government motivates the Hong Kong film industry, it needs to work hard on cultivating directors who makes commercial films. Film companies ultimately need some directors who have already succeeded to make commercial films. When they give new comers opportunities they provide them with some small budget non entertainment ones. If they are well made they can be taken to film festivals for one or two awards and improve the companies' reputation. Even when new directors win awards abroad, their future productions do not get much help from them. If their box office is extremely low, the film loses money, the chances of them continuing to make movies is unlikely. Everyone can see how many new directors work every year. Their income is not enough for them to make a living. Thus they have to rely on other income to live. This is another problem of the film industry's generational gap. Filmmaking requires experience. How much experience can making one movie every two or three years provide? In the past television stations also cultivated talent. Now television almost have no single episode series. The occasional few would find experienced directors to make. Film fund not only should provide financial assistant to commercial films but also needs to cultivate new commercial film directors at the same time. - KWOK HIN CHING 7. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 29 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH RADIO AND TELEVISION HONG KONG OWES JOHNNIE TO KEI FUNG AN EXPLANATION Last Saturday, a certain newspaper's entertainment headline was director Johnnie To Kei Fung accuses Radio and Television Hong Kong of "lacking fairness" because when To Kei Fung called a Radio Hong Kong program the operator refused to connect him to the live broadcast studio. Thus he complained to reporters about Radio Hong Kong's lack of fairness. The program hosts were Lau Tin Chi, Tang Tat Chi and Man Kit Wa. The guest of the evening was film festival artistic director Lee Cheuk To who discussed the Hong Kong International Film Festival and the film culture. Director To heard their comments and wanted to speak, but the operator "politely" declined. Thus Mr. To accused Radio Hong Kong of not being fair and just because Radio Hong Kong did not provide him with the opportunity to express his opinion. Everything was just packaging. Mr. To has always "spoken his mind" but this time he is right; Radio Hong Kong owes his an explanation. Lau Tin Chi expresses that he has no idea who has called, which perhaps is the truth. Later Radio Hong Kong Radio One chief Chan Yiu Wa's response was, "Anyone is absolutely welcome to call and express opinions, but it may not necessarily be able to reach the live broadcast studio." He expressed that "each listener is treated fairly". He appreciated To Kei Fung's movies and hoped to be able to invite To to "chat" on the program. If every listener is treated fairly, why every listener's call is not able to reach the studio? Station chief Chan's response is too simple. A radio station cannot possibly be fair to every listener. This type of non absolute fairness is Mr. Chan's comment of "every call may not necessarily reach the studio". Since he appreciated To Kei Fung why did he not just tell the truth? Mr. To asked why his call was not connected to the studio, in other words he has already revealed his identity. If at the time Mr. To did not reveal his identity, Station Chief Chan has stated the truth. If the operator knew To Kei Fung was calling, Radio Hong Kong should respond to Mr. To's question. Three possible answers were due to schedule no more call could be taken, the hosts was reluctant to take Mr. To's call, and the situation required confirmation. Director To later even expresssed that the hosts did not know about film. One of the hosts, Baptist College professional Man Kit Wa claimed that she is on this year's film festival jury and also has written film critiques; Lau Tin Chi has years of show business experience and is an experienced off screen personnel. Both have knowledge about film. Actually To's claim of "knowing film" was not necessarily referring to film knowledge and art. When some film professionals heard (or watch) film programs they all have a common feeling that the hosts "do not know film". Mainly they refer to the lack of understanding of today's film operation and industry conditions. If that was Mr. To's opinion the writer agrees. Another radio station's host often talks about movies, which any film professionals can tell "does not know film". Let's truly hope that radio and the media can find more film profesisonals to host film programs. - TIN LIK 8. TA KUNG PAO, MARCH 29 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION TRAVERSE ZHU SHILIN FILMS BRING NOSTALGIA THE DIVIDING WALL (YAT BAN JI CHA), SPOILING THE WEDDING DAY (NG GAI KEI), ALL ABOUT A LADY (TAI TAI JUEN KEI), A WIDOW'S TEARS (SUN GUA) to FESTIVAL MOON (JUNG CHAU YUET), A WELL TO DO FAMILY (GUM UK MUNG) and THE WAY OF A HUSBAND AND WIFE (FU CHAI GAING), the outstanding film professional of Hong Kong and even China modern film history Zhu Shilin reminds me of these films of his. Although the subject has all been some little real life story and even the daily troubles of the little people. Yet they have reflected that era's Hong Kong. The subjects that these films touched upon were extramaritial affair, remarriage, the economic pressure, class level, relationship between generations, family, couple and neighbor relationships that the little people faced in the material world, issues that still remain in today's society; these are the subjects that Zhu Shilin have made the most and had the most expertise in. With his intricate film abilities and storytelling techniques, these films although were completed half a century ago; but now they still had a modern feel and influence. Of course when Zhu Shilin's film achievements are discussed, SORROWS OF THE FORBIDDEN CITY (CHING GUNG BEI SI) and TEARS OF A MOTHER (CHI MO KUK) had to be mentioned. The former could be said as an important film for him. He merged politics and family relationship into one as he reflected political levels through conflicting relationships between mother and son, husband and son and mother in law and daughter in law and successfully created various characters' personalities and image. It also became similar story's research basis; most importantly, he in that film demonstrated film art, camera use, structure and lighting contrast to express the palace aura and the situation inside and outside, which earned this black and white film very high praises not only in China but also internationally. As for TEARS OF A MOTHER, it not only was his representative work but also was a classic Chinese film. One of Zhu's expertise family relationship interpreted this farm village story, brought out timeless subjects of motherly love and senior issues. His dedicated operation of this reality reflection along with the cast's sincerely touching performance made TEARS OF A MOTHER a film that rivaled (MA LO TIN SI). Zhu Shilin was born in times of turmoil and due to illness was not completely mobile, but he ot only was passionate about film creation and writing and directing but also through comedy made fun of the unfair and incorrect of reality. On many occasions they had happy ending and brought out a positive messages of encouragement that were respected. - CHUI HIU 9. MING PAO DAILY, MARCH 28 2008, FILM WORDS KABEI OUR MOTHER: GOOD FILM ABOUT LIFE In recent years the Hong Kong International Film Festival must have Yoji Yamada. The older this director gets the more mastery he has. Although his samurai trilogy TWILIGHT SAMURAI, HIDDEN BLADE and LOVE AND HONOR were twilight brilliance, they still were full of Japanese film's excellent tradition and fostering possibly the final sign of life of the old era. The 76 year old Yoji Yamada's new film KABEI OUR MOTHER has the Japanese film industry heavenly queen Sayuri Yoshinaga in the lead and becomes this year's opening film. That day I did not have time, so of course I attended the second screening. This film indeed is very touching. In KABEI an anti war professor due to "intellectual crime" during World War II was arrested. His wife ran all over in a panic in an attempt to visit him while taking care of their two young daughters. This is a small tragedy of a big war era, without cooking up extreme emotions it is very simple and solid. Like a home cooked meal it is full of familiarity. In the film the professor's family actually maintains the old samurai ways (not the fight picking and blind loyalty, but the gentleman spirit). When the husband falls, he gives a quiet bitter laugh and accepts it with grace and honor; the wife in order to keep her family alive tolerates insults and abuses without losing an ounce of dignity. Wonderfully KABEI is mainly about a small family's daily life, humorously making fun amid pain. It also has Yoji Yamada's past expertise little people comedy specialty. The younger daughter's playful and hungry ways are very fun. The professor's former student is hilarious with his fondness of crying. It also has a pretty aunt and silmiar to TORA-SAN's humorous bachelor relative. Especially funny is the old neighborhood grocery store owner who spouted the Japanese militarism world conquest talk yet was very kind to the lead's family. Even loyal and patriotic police chief grandfather was lively amid an awkward situation. This anti war family film is full of real nostalgia, heavy humanity and achieves laughter and tears. Its style is a mixture of Yasujiro Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi, as well as Yoji Yamada's own small people comedy as the film becomes a great film of joy, sorrow, union and parting. Sayuri Yoshinaga indeed is an evergreen. This young beauty of the 60s was beautiful and touching in the 80s FINE SNOW and STATIONS TO HEAVEN and confirmed her Japanese heavenly queen status. Now at 63 she originally was too old to play the 40 something gentle wife and mother, but she remained convincing and very attractive. Tadanobu Asano as the former student is a clumsy yet faithful crybaby who has a crush on his mentor's wife. He is very funny and lovable, better than his portrayal of Genghis Khan in another new film THE MONGOL. - SHEK KEI (http://www.cultureshot.net/sekkeiluklei) 10. MING PAO DAILY, MARCH 27 2008, FILM WORDS BOX OFFICE CHART This week has no hot opening as Easter mainstream films continue to reign. SEveral hits after the long holiday still did decent business. Hong Kong film L FOR LOVE L FOR LIES (NGOR DIK JUI OI) has already exceeded 10 million at the box office and defeated foreign films. Alex Fong Lik Sun, Stephy Tang Lai Yun and writer director Yip Lim Sum's team has been able to attracted new era local viewers. After MARRIAGE TO A FOOL (DUK GA SI OI) and LOVE IS NOT ALL AROUND (SUP FUN OI) they have become box office guarantees. The Kelly Chen Wai Lam, Leon Lai Ming and Donnie Yen Chi Tan starred, Ching Siu Tung directed costume war romance THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS (GONG SAN MEI YUN) had average box office performance and could not catch up to the much smaller scale L FOR LOVE L FOR LIES, but conceivably its Mainland market would be larger. EMPRESS had big scenes, big action and nationally recogized stars. Unfortunately it was light on common sense and the performance was somewhat too much work for too little pay off. Chen Wai Lam was the most enertaining as her acting has improved. As for foreign films, the biggest hits were the family targetted films THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES and HORTON HEARS A WHO. They drew better than the Hollywood ace superstars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts starred CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR. WAR has quite an U.S. political humor. Yet it is about an U.S. senator's financial assitance to Afghanistan's fight against the Soviet Union over 20 years ago and truly has a hard time with generating too much interest outside the country. - SHEK KEI (http://www.cultureshot.net/sekkkeiluklei) 11. MING PAO DAILY, MARCH 27 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS HONG KONG FILM NEEDS TO RELAX MORE This year Easter came a little early. The flu has given elementary school students several more days off but the film box office was not affected. L FOR LOVE L FOR LIES (NGOR DIK JUI OI) was released a week earlier and had a huge box office lead, which was a decent strategy. As of Monday the final day of the holiday, L FOR LOVE L FOR LIES' cumulative box office was 9.417 million with a single day take of 584,000. LOVE IS NOT ALL AROUND (SUP FUN OI) had 12 million, L FOR LOVE L FOR LIES seemingly would be able to maintain the record. Youth subject in comparison easily obtains good box office. The audience has shown their needs with their action. Film creators should respond more to them. Another Hong Kong film THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS (GONG SAN MEI YUN)'s cast and production are larger but the performance instead is slightly less. After five days in release it has made 4.249 million. On Monday its single day take was 655,000. For recent Hong Kong films it truly is decent, only that it is not proportional to cost. THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS has Donnie Yen Chi Tan, Kelly Chen Wai Lam, Leon Lai Ming, director Ching Siu Tung, art director Yee Chung Man, all of top on and off screen talent. The film has a big film style. If big films like this only has 10 million box office in Hong Kong it would disapoint slightly. Its Mainland performance definitely is better than Hong Kong's. Reporteldy it has already made nearly 50 million. The Hong Kong audience does not have much impulse to big films of this type with war action because they are exhausted. Although all three are Hong Kong stars and more famliar than other similar big films. It still cannot attract massive amount of young viewers despite its box office edge that is at least better than THE BANQUET's. On average this type of big films primarily relies on Mainland revenue, but from Mainland reviews and audience response the Mainland audience is also starting to get tired. THE EMPRESS AND THE WARRIORS is also very entertaining production wise. Actors also work very hard. It only loses with too many similar films previously. Even though this film has more romance and without the previous big war films' burden, it still has no way to rid the audience's accumulated exhaustion. Hong Kong films need to relax more and carry less burden. - KWOK HIN CHING [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Bo Chi Tung Wa Lit : Keep In Touch d.
