Ken Hung Cheuk Lap, Sherman Chung Shu Man, Chow Pak Ho, Lee Cheuk Ting all came to support Kong Yeuk Lam. Most actors appeared in tailored school uniforms except Maggie Lee Man Kwan who wore a strap dress. She honestly said that previously she has heard about school uniform but her company provided her clothes. She joked that she could be the truant student. Later Kong Yeuk Lam accepted a new film in which Taiwan idol group Lollipop would guest star. Reportedly she would have a kiss scene with a co-star and that all six members of the group fought to kiss her. She replied that she has read the screenplay and asked her company and she would not even have any scene with them. If she had to choose she would choose Alan Luo (Law Chi Cheung) because he was her idol. * (1/16/2008) Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau) yesterday attended a shopping center opening. She said that she planned to spend the Lunar New Year in Taiwan. As she will be promoting her new film SHAMO (GWUN GAI), she was working on her schedule with her company in hopes of going earlier then returning to Hong Kong for a marathon. * (1/16/2008) Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) in KUNG FU DUNK (GONG FU GUOON NAM) is a master of many abilities, full score shots, trick bicycle riding, and even fighting come easily. In one scene he in order to rescue a friend goes to Red Flower Society alone and fight 80 thugs. Chairman Chou not only punches and kicks but also uses Bruce Lee's classic nunchuks. No wonder viewers are amazed. According to action director Ching Siu Tung expresses, this scene lasts over ten minutes of comic book style fighting. Thus many occasions requires one straight take and adds to the difficulty. In one scene Chairman Chou needs to land perfectly on one leg after kicking from a glass table, a move that Ching Siu Tung describes as "more difficult than Olympic gymnastics". On the other hand, this film will start its 14 day Asian promotional tour at the end of January. Chairman Chou, Chen Bo-Lin and new comer Baron Chen Chor Ho along with managers, assistants, make up artists and others would go on this trip that will cost over 1 million. Reportedly Chairman Chou likes this type of film promotional tour a lot since he can meet with vermicelli and fans in different areas. Although the promotional date is still more than two weeks ago, Chairman Chou is already very excited and studies with his assistants on what to wear everyday. He even has given a lot of suggestions after each place's events, which shows his sincerity and passion. * (1/16/2008) Charlene Choi Cheuk Yin has confirmed to "reunite" with Dior Cheng Yi Kin after six years in their new film. They even have Nicholas Tse Ting Fung's first villain role in support. Although the film has not started production, the cast and crew have already planned to promote in May at Cannes. Since the Pang Brothers announced their STORM RIDERS (FUNG WON) production, they were interested in heading to Korea for the female lead casting. Yet the film company felt that Ah Sa had "market value" in Southeast Asia and Twins just won the "Asia Pacific Most Popular Hong Kong Female Singer" award. With her appropriate image, after numerous contacts with Ah Sa's manager Mani Fok Man Hei despite many Korean stars' interest in the role, both sides came to an agreement and would sign contract in days. Ah Sa and Ekin had spark in 2002's MY WIFE IS EIGHTEEN (NGOR LO POR NG GAU CHING). The film company at the same time cast Ting Fung to play villain Juet Sum and began a battle between good and evil with Ekin and Aaron Kwok Fu Sing. The cast and crew have scheduled to shoot on location in Thailand for three months after the Lunar New Year. The budget would be US$10 million. Due to the massive post production, the initial release plan would be around October 09. The film company even planned to follow THE PROMISE (MO GIK) and THE BANQUET (YEH YIN)'s lead and invest heavily on promotion at Cannes in May. Fok Man Hei said about Ting Fung's first villain role. "Ting Fung wants change in his range, and the character has potential so he took it." Patrick Tam Yiu Man would play the Emperor. * (1/16/2009) Dior Cheng Yi Kin and Karena Lam Ka Yun accepted the new film FA FEI FA (FLOWER FEI FLOWER), the director of which was famous screen writer Ong Sai. Two nights ago Ekin and Ka Yun worked on a driving scene in Soho, Central. The crew installed the camera on the front of the car and everything was ready. When the shoot started, Ekin forgot to shift gear, the car rolled backward and frightened the actors in the car. Ekin immediately apologized to his co-star. Luckily Ekin's flaw did not affect production and finally they were able to successfully complete the evening's shoot. Aside from them veteran actor Lok Ying Kwun, Tsang Kwok Cheung and Chucky Wood Gei Lan. Everyone dressed up, even the usually youthful Wood Gei Lan. Ekin wore a suit and wire framed glasses and looked even more stable. In the scene Ekin drove the other cast members. Because this film was Ong Sai's first as a director he was obviously nervous as he often studied the shots with Ekin and Lok Ying Kwun. * (1/15/2008) CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG CHUT HO) yesterday held its Hong Kong press conference. Stephen Chow Sing Chi led the children Xu Jiao, Huang Lei and other actors like Lam Tsz Chung in attendance. Female lead Kitty Zhang Yuqi was working on Tsui Hark's new film in Beijing, but the crew claimed that she did not feel well enough to come. Sing Jai expressed on stage that this film would bring out a happy message to everyone. Although some have said that working with children was the most difficult, this time was very smooth as the film completely relied on this group of genius child stars. He even said, "Everyone know I have always liked children, I am more alert when I work with them." Sing Jai expressed, this film was his happiest production in recent years. For his first father role he could only rely on imagination. He honestly said that he has rarely seen his father. This time added computer generated special effects and warmth. He expected the computer effects to be more complex so he did not mind. At first he was worried that the children would be hard to instruct, luckily he was able to find a child who was strong ability to comprehend in Xu Jiao. Even he said that he was very lucky, otherwise this film's completion date might have been unknown. When asked he took such good care of Xu Jiao because she had a shade of his childhood? He said that she resembled him a little. Since both were geniuses, and geniuses were likable. He said that when he was nine he did not know how to say a sentence. In his eyes, Xu Jiao was not mature but also had the innocence of a child. She also had the ability of comprehend that was better than his during his childhood. However when asked when he would have a child he expressed that he still has no plan. A fortuneteller predicted that this film that sold family warmth would not have as good box office as his past nonsense comedy. Sing Jai cited that among the world's top ten highest grossing films, family films occupied most of them. He knew that following trend would be more stable but he did not like to do what others do, which was more interesting to him and had breakthroughs. For example SHAOLIN SOCCER has never been tried before, after he made it no one has only because it was hard to make. He pointed out that the family film was also very hard. Working with children and animals were very difficult. If well made they would be very powerful. Sing Jai admitted that this film was the biggest investment in his career. Both special effect and his salary were not heap, but he joked that Xu Jiao was the most expensive. Some claimed that some of his and Xu Jiao's stills resembled AFTER THIS OUR EXILE (FU JI) and also said that the film's alien life form CJ7 resembled CHICKEN LITTLE. He said with certainty that neither had any resemblance and said that the film's dog was not four eyed. Everyone relied on inaccurate photos. They would not have to watch the film to know for sure. Finally Zhang Yuqi earlier revealed his ending in the film, which he denied, "Why would there be death during the Lunar New Year?" * (1/15/2008) Model Anke Bui in May will work on the Hong Kong version of MIAMI VICE but she will go to Los Angeles for wire work lessons in February because Hong Kong had no place of instruction. She will study for a month and the film company will cover the expense. In the new film she will play an undercover cop and will have many action scenes. Thus earlier she has already started to learn gong fu in preparation. When asked whether she would like to become an action actress, she said, "No, as an actress I should try different characters." * (1/15/2008) Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau) promoted her film TWO STUPID EGGS (DAI DIN YING 2 LEUNG GOR SOR GUA DIK FONG TONG SI) earlier with a Mainland tour with stops in Beijing, Changchun and Shanghai. Lam Ka Tung who played the eligible bachelor who has a crusho n her also took time to promote in Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Many reporters praised them as well matched. When Sum Yau was asked about working with Ka Tung she revealed that he attracted her. Her first impression of Ka Tung was "Wow! He really is pretty handsome!" Her impression of Ka Tung was always the mob image in black without any expression. Yet on the set he was in white and well dressed. She could not help but fall for him. Ka Tung's first impression of Sum Yau was the opposite. He was not only embarrassed but also did not dare to look at Sum Yau directly. Ka Tung said, "On the first day at the set, I wanted to greet everyone; but Sum Yau just finished a bed scene with Guo Tao and wore very little, so during the greeting she kept on covering herself. It was so awkward that I didn't dare to look more." Ka Tung has not made any romantic scene for awhile. This time he completely relied on the director to give him a chance to pick up that feeling again so he joked that he had to thank the director. Since the film opened at the end of last month, its Mainland box office has already exceeded 20 million yuan. This film will officially be released in Hong Kong on the 24th. Sum Yau not only hoped for big box office success but also that viewers would accept her comedy character. * (1/15/2008) Karena Lam Ka Yun earlier studied performing art in France and could not wait to return to work. After three months away from work she decided to warm up with a romantic comedy with Dior Cheng Yi Kin, FA FEI FAI (FLOWER FEI FLOWER). Working with Ekin again, she was worried that the freshness would be no longer. However when she learned that her friend screenwriter Ong Sai will direct for the first time they did not mind to pair up again in support of her. Although they would play a couple they would not have any intimate scene and would hold hands at most. * (1/14/2008) The new Performing Artist Guild chair was announced on the 11th as music scene principal Alan Tam Wing Lun was named. He expressed that few singers have participated in the guild and thus he hoped that he could draw more singers to join and perform more community service. He also said that he has turned down the post ten times but because Eric Tsang Chi Wai's term limit he could not continue on. However he has already promised to help as much as he could. He also expressed that Eason Chan Yik Shun and Andy Lau Tak Wa would be this term's assistant chair but he felt that both and Jacky Cheung Hok Yau should take the posts since they all just finished their concerts. Now he hoped that they would serve next term. * (1/14/2008) Alex Fong Lik Sun, Stephy Tang Lai Yun reunite onscreen as a couple again. Yesterday with Miki Yeung Oi Kun, Wu Ching Nam and others they attended the film NGOR DIK JUI OI (MY MOST BELOVED) press conference. Because the location was near a protest, the act had to walk ten minutes before arriving. This film had MARRIAGE TO A FOOL (DUK GA SI OI)'s original cast and one new addition, Taiwan actress Tsang Hoi Won who has worked on the Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) directed SECRET (BUT NUNG SHUET DIK BEI MUK). Alex would have romance with Stephy and Tsang Hoi Won. He said that he still did not know whether they would have intimate scenes. He only knew that the director wanted to take him to dinner. When he first met Tsang Hoi Won, he felt that she was very suitable character. Miki wore hair extensions for this film, in which she would play a positive girl who often wore shorts and skirts. She has not deliberately lost weight yet. As for whether she and Wu Ching Nam have very fierce intimate scenes. She expressed that she should and she was worried that it would be very awkward. Stephy revealed that she and Siu Fong would have even more passionate bed scenes. Although it would not be as daring as LUST, CAUTION it would be rather exaggerated theoretically. Stephy joked that Siu Fong was the luckiest while she was at a lot of disadvantage! * (1/14/2008) With over 30 years in film Jackie Chan makes a big change in his new film as he plays an ill fated illegal alien. Earlier nearly 100 people attended the worship ceremony. As everyone took turn to present incense the ceremony took the full 30 minutes. The Emperor invested, Derek Yee Tung Sing and Jackie Chan new film SUN SHOOK SI GEIN (THE SHINJUKU INCIDENT) after a round of casting finally confirmed Daniel Wu (Ng Yin Cho), Lam Suet, Chin Kar Lok, Paul Chun Pui's daughter Leslie, Japanese actors Naoto Takenaka (Juk Jung Jik Yun), Kato (Ga Tung Nga Ya), Yasuaki Kurata (Chong Tin Bo Siu) in key roles. This time Jackie Chan would be between "former girlfriend" Xu Jinglei and "Mamasan" Fan Bingbing. Playing an illegal alien in Japan, Jackie Chan would be swept into a Japanese underworld power struggle. This time he would abandon his past invincible image for warmth and brotherhood in hopes of successfully expanding his range with this film. * (1/12/2008) The Stephen Chow Sing Chi written, directed and starred new film CJ7 (CHEUNG GONG CHUT HO) is about to be released. Sing Yeh earlier appeared with Sing Girl Xu Jiao on a Phoenix Satellite program and recounted how they met, their lives and the film. Sing Yeh had high praises for Xu Jiao's performance. He sighed, "If I didn't find her, CJ7 would have no way to be realized." The only 10 year old Xu Jiao had no stage fright in front of Sing Yeh. Her live reaction was sharp, conversation was thunder stealing. She said that her first impression of Sing Yeh was "rather cool, with a big pair of sunglasses and without a smile." When asked who her favorite film star was, she actually answered Liu Yifei and stressed that what she was came from the heart. Sing Yeh did not know whether to laugh or to cry. Xu Jiao also revealed that for the movie she had to cut off her long hair and she has cried, but she said, "Hair can grow long in a year, opportunity slips away in a moment." Sing Yeh revealed that the film is a father and son themed comedy, the real lead actually is an alien dog. CJ7 is this dog's name. "I hope to be able to achieve an image, America has Mickey Mouse, ET, Japan has Ultraman, Doreamon, I really want China to have such an image." * (1/12/2008) The Hong Kong cinema chamber of commerce yesterday announced the 2007 top five grossing foreign film and Chinese film. SPIDER MAN 3 led with HK$54,540180, 2 million more than HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. As for Chinese films, LUST, CAUTION (SIK, GAI) was the best performer with HK$48427,174 as of December 31 2007 and in third place for the entire year. Other films included PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN AT WORLD'S END, TRANSFORMERS, A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM, PROTEGE (MOON TOH), SECRET (BUT NUNG SHUET DIK BEI MUK), and INVISIBLE TARGET (NAM YI BOON SIK). * (1/11/2008) Yumiko Cheng Hei Yi, Chow Pak Ho, Ken Hung Cheuk Lap, Chan Pak Yu, Tong So Kei and Sherman Chung Shu Man yesterday worked on their new film OI CHING MAN SHUI (LOVE HAIL) at a Central restaurant. Yumiko has been working with a group of new comers in the film. Reporters joked that she was the oldest. She said, "I don't dare to ask about age, I think that should be right." As for the kiss scene with junior colleage Hung Cheuk Lap, Yumiko said that because it was Ken's first kiss scene after she took his first kiss his face turned red and she felt sorry. She said, "Because he was scared and nervous, actually I am the girl! I was pretty girl." In another scene a naked foreign man stood in front of Yumiko and she fainted from fright. Before the shoot the crew asked whether she needed his lower body to be "sealed" and Yumiko immediately asked for tape because she was worried about scaring herself. She joked that if she saw his lower body she might not be able to even perform the fainting. With the foreigner suffering lower body abuse, did Yumiko console him? She honestly said that she did not feel right about asking him but she felt that normally she was in a lot of pain with double sided tape, not to mention taping a sensitive area. Chan Pak Yu and Chow Pak Ho sat aside. While the former played video games to kill time, the boys revealed they chatted and ate to spend time. Were they trying to avoid rumors so they did not dare to talk with the girls? They said, "We would chat with the girls too like Tong So Kei and Chung Shu Man, but Tong So Kei is quieter." Chow Pak Ho joked that since Chan Pak Ho ate everything in sight he had the biggest mouth. * (1/11/2008) Vic Chou Yu Man and Li Bingbing currently are busy with their new film LINGER (WU DIP FEI)'s Mainland promotion. After Beijing and Shanghai, they yesterday already flew to the third stop Guangzhou to continue the promotion. Because the Mainland promotional tour was very intense, when they attended the Guangzhou press conference they already showed signs of exhaustion. However both still answered all questions and were very professional. In the film, Bingbing is the object of younger man Wong Yau Nam's pursuit. Jai Jai is also younger than her. Reporters asked whether in real life she could accept a relationship wtih a younger man. Bingbing turned red when she heard the question was about romance and covered her face. "This problem of yours has made me a little embarrassed. I feel love is uncontrollable, let it be! I won't resist it." Last night they attended the audience meeting. Today they would fly to Chengdu for their last Mainland stop. * (1/11/2008) Simon Yam Tat Wa and Qi Qi yesterday attended an Auping flagship store opening. Wa Gor revealed that he has completed the longest production in his career, THE SPARROW (MAN JEUK). He said that now he is in post production for this movie that lasted over four years. This film will be released during the Lunar New Year. As for the production, Wa Gor said that the actors in the film gained over ten pounds over four years. In the final scene, they and three other actors had to ride a bicycle that in the end of crushed. In addition, the Johnnie To Kei Fung directed, Wa Gor and Kelly Lin (Lam Hei Lui) starred THE SPARROW has qualified for the Berlin Film Festival. To Sir was rather pleased. He said that this film took over four years to make and he did not understand how it could never be finished. Actually his first film festival was the Berlin Film Festival, thus this film festival meant a lot to him. This year the Berlin Film Festival would take place during the Lunar New Year. He would like to leave on the Lunar third and would take Wa Gor and Lam Hei Lui along. * (1/10/2008) Sam Lee Chan Sam earlier worked on the Mainland director A Gan directed TWO STUPID EGGS (DAI DIN YING 2 LEUNG GOR SOR GUA DIK GOO SI), in which he played a boy who went from Hong Kong to Shanghai for his dream of stardom. Finally he ran into Annie Liu (Lau Sum Yau)'s husband Liu To and started to work on a film. The most memorable moment for him was when he instructed newlywed reproduction technique in an Adam costume. When Lee Chan Sam performed this scene, he felt that the designer's costumes were not funny enough so he came up with his own. "First I found some banana tree leaves for an apron but later due to Mainland standards he could not be too wild. Cheung Tat Ming and I found two small leaves to cover up my chest." The home made wildman look not only won the director's praises, when Sum Yau discovered them hiding in the closet and under the bed topless she originally had to act surprised but cracked up instead. For his first Mainland comedy, he said, "In working with Mainland, the biggest challenge is the language. Luckily this time the character came from Hong Kong to work in Shanghai. The director permitted me to break into one or two lines of Cantonese and Hong Kong style Mandarin." [ BLAH OF THE WEEK ] Columns, Reviews, Interviews 1. MING PAO DAILY, JANUARY 16 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS WHY EASON CHAN IS THE BIG WINNER Obviously, Eason Chan Yik Shun has the Four Station Alliance Media Award firmly in hand. Aside from each of the four stations' award show major prizes, each years singers would like to win this four station award total tally Media Award that represents the entire year's big winner. Actually Media Award also has been given to behind the scene creators with the most awards, but the media are not too interested in covering the behind the scene people too much. Thus the Media Award seems to be given only to singers. This year several award shows have had "making horse" (fixing) criticism, but the support for Chan Yik Shun as the big winner is uniform among the four stations. Last year the top few singers had even performance. Instead of saying Chan Yik Shun's performance last year was the best, you may as well say everyone is looking forward to even better performance in the future. When the writer talks about what criteria are required to be an idol he cites Jay Chou (Chow Kit Lun) and Chan Yik Shun as examples. In recent years when you ask male music fans which male singer's songs they love to listen to, nine out of ten would answer Chan Yik Shun because it is foolproof and definitely no one would look down upon it. Chan Yik Shun sings well but is not pretentious. Sometimes he is reported to be acting up and doing something strange, but none of that has affected others and his personal image. To a music fan, he is only someone who is more rebellious; which is this generation's demand for idols. Today the biggest taboos against young idol are being fake, being too straight laced, too preachy, or do too much charity or positive promotion. In recent years crying has been popular at award shows. Chan Yik Shun has never cried on stage and in estimate he will not over this year's Media Award. When everyone cries, not crying is good. The writer is not against singer's real emotions, only whether it is revealed too much. Female music fans also accept Chan Yik Shun. Although he is not handsome enough, it is not a problem. Nowadays too many sell good looks but not singing abilities in the music scene. Those with looks but no personality are also numerous. Too individually strong but too artistically weak also exist. In recent years the good singers seem not to have similar result in acting. Chan Yik Shun's has been considered reasonable. He can act but he just needs a good character for him to shine in. - KWOK HIN CHING 2. MING PAO DAILY, JANUARY 15 2008, FILM AND TELEVISION OBSERVATIONS LINGER: DECENT MODERN SUPERNATURAL ROMANCE Johnnie To Kei Fung has made a variety of movies, but this new film drastically differed from his trademark style as a supernatural romance that focused on women. Actually he and Wai Ka Fai have co-directed the supernatural romantic comedy MY LEFT EYE SEES GHOST (NGOR JOR NGAN GEIN DOH GWAI). RUNNING ON KARMA (DAI JET LO) and recent film MAD DETECTIVE (SUN TAM) were both supernatural, but LINGER was extra elegant and detailed as if it came from the hands of another To Kei Fung. Perhaps, like MAD DETECTIVE demonstrated each person has multiple personalities, among the many sides of a big man may be a woman side. LINGER (WU DIP FEI) is Ong Sai written; no wonder it is full of woman feeling and becomes To Kei Fung's first small attempt at variation. In comparison to many local and foreign supernatural romance, LINGER is not considered innovative but it is unique. Its set up and tone are uncommon and has a reserved and intricate psychological description. The story starts with a pair of university students' romantic trouble that ends in tragedy. Years later the female lead works in a law firm and is still under her late boyfriend's haunting. Is she having a hard time with forgetting about her old flame or does ghost truly exist? Whether it is a dream or reality, this is a "ghost story" that is full of modern reasons and takes the female lead's everyday details and mixes new and old romance rather skillfully. This film stars Mainland star Li Bingbing and Taiwan idol Vic Chou Yu Man. Chou Yu Man is handsome and cool, eve better is Li Bingbing. In her claim to fame SEVENTEEN YEARS (GOR NIN WUI GA) as a female prison guard and in THE KNOT (WAN SHUI YIU) as a female soldier she is outstanding. This time her style is completely different as she plays the Hong Kong female lead very appropriately. Indeed she is a good actress who is entertaining and has variety. To Kei Fung film frequent regulars Maggie Siu Mei Kei, Yau Yung, Lam Suet, Roy Cheung Yiu Yeung and others help and all change their image. In addition, the male social worker who loves the female lead is very mild mannered and straight laced. Wong Yau Nam as the Wise Guy who is always in legal trouble is lively and humorous. Originally, Wong Yau Nam's character is very important as he and the late male lead make strong contrast. Strangely they seem to be transforming and even resolve the endless romantic and family love like "historical reenactment". Yet his expressions are exaggerated and the cause and effect have never been clearly explained. By the end the drama is not grand enough. LINGER overall has not achieved touching attraction but it also has a lot of positive points. The basketball game is also supernatural. Both the doctor visit, medication and law firm are dramatic. This film also modernizes the Chinese classic butterfly metamorphosis. Life, death and love and hate are resolved in the light and agile butterfly dances, thus points out the Chinese film title's source. - KWOK HIN CHING 3. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 13 2008, MANDY CHIANG MAKES MOVIE TO ACCELERATE GROWTH Some films are full of entertainment, some films inspire deep thinking. Mandy Chiang Nga Man, Kenny Kwan Chi Bun and Deep Ng Ho Hong starred BLACK TRIAL (HAK DOH ji MO FUI GUM SUN) belongs to the latter. Mandy says, filmmaking is like a lesson. Each time she grows from it. From participating in this film she has the chance to come in contact with real individuals and the recovery community that they belong to. She experiences their sincerity and understands people should not look at people with bias. Leung Hung Wa produced and directed BLACK TRIAL, which is based on a group of mob figures' real stories and shot on location at a Taiwan community care center. Aside from Ng Ho Hong, Kwan Chi Bun and Chiang Nga Man and a small group of actors, the rest who appear on screen are all real life case individuals who are recovering from mental illness or rehabilitation. Inspiration Mandy in the film plays someone who after recovery remains in the community and helps as a secretary and a social worker type and is responsible for the community's women cases. "My character exists in real life. Usually people who recovered are more isolated and have difficulty with trusting others. They would hide a lot inside and not telling anyone. Thus in the film, although I like Deep, I don't dare to express it. Later I realize that not saying it in time would be quite regrettable." She says. For this movie, Mandy and other actors need to personally live and work in the recovery community. she says, this time basically she has no way to "do the homework" completely in advance because the market has very few movies with the same type. In the film she is not a traditional social worker either so research is very hard. She can only rely on familiarizing herself with the information and watch the related local documentary, then she gets to the place from being there. "With past movies I would first take a look at the related venue first so I can get into the role easier. This time I can direct live there. I feel this is a great experience because there is not a backdrop background, but where case individuals live. When we live there for awhile we can very easily merge into their community and become a part of them. We don't need to deliberately get into character." "We feel like we enter someone else's home, I am very happy that they don't isolate us. They not only accept our disturbance for awhile but also become friends with us. Sometimes when we shoot into late at night we worry that we would hinder their rest. They do not mind at all and are even very glad to help. Actually they too want a lot to be able to have their own value." Aside from filmmaking, she also understands some stories behind the cases and is touched by their different experience. "A female case individual looks good but distracted. She walks around only with a glass of water for a long time. Actually this girl's boyfriend suggests a breakup because she is fat, finally she collapses and suffers from anorexia. Everyday she doesn't eat and just drinks water. When I see her my heart sours but I have no way to help her. Patients are trapped in their fantasy world where they feels safe and would not get hurt. Thus they are unwilling to come out again. Actually as long as they are willing to come out they can immediately recover; many who have recovered and already left the community are now completely normal. These successful examples are very admirable." Appearance Without Make Up One of Mandy's big breakthrough in this film is appearing without any make up. Actually this was not the director's original idea but her own decision, the goal of which was to be more convincing with her character. "The director at first scheduled a make up artist, but I feel no one would dress up in that community. I have to merge within it. If I wear make up, wouldn't I be doing the opposite? I tell myself no make up. After waking up, washing my face and brushing my teeth, I wear what I sleep in without even combing my hair to work. Of course, girls still have some obstacles to overcome because with and without make up sometimes can be a little different. I have to tell myself no eyeliner, no mascara and rouge, no matter what I have to leave something behind. Yet this is advantageous to the character as viewers can be more convinced." Although she is an idol singer she feels that if she has to protect her singing image at any time good filmmaking would be very hard. Since she has chosen to sing and act she would like her fans to understand and like her personality more than looks. BLACK TRIAL is another social subject film for Chiang Nga Man since WHISPERS AND MOANS (SING GUNG JOK JEH SUP YUT TAM). She feels, filmmaking is like a lesson. Whichever type of movies she makes, she naturally would have some knowledge of related matter. Each time she would grow. "The world has too much knowledge, if not for acting I may not have the chance to come in contact with it. For example when I made WHISPERS AND MOANS last time, I went to many places that I thought I would never go in this lifetime. My eyes were opened and I experienced professions have no difference. As long as you use your own hard work to make a living and not steal, lie, kidnap or cheat you are already worthy of respect. This movie is the same way. When I received the screenplay I knew that I would work with a group of real people and I felt very happy. I have always enjoyed more alternative psychology books like death psychology, suicide and crime, so I am very interested in understanding why someone does something." Love Singing She honestly says, this is a very rare chance. At first her family and company was somewhat worried for a girl like her to work in that community. Finally she not only proved that she was able to take care of herself but also had an even deeper understanding of people's lives around her in the community and case individuals. "Because many have bias against those case individuals they dare not face outsiders. I feel everyone should try to accept them, actually the feeling that they give people are very real. They wouldn't hide anything. Chatting and being with them are comfortable because they are very honest, unlike people who do not say what they feel in the modern society." Mandy recently has been making movies nonstop and also has to mind her singing career as well as her own photography collection. She has been busy. When asked whether she feels that her job is too much, she says that life sometimes can be very conflicting. She wants to do the job well but also wants ample sleep, but nothing is perfect in the world. When she needs to make compromise she definitely would choose work over sleep because she has to take advantage now to charge ahead with her career. "Between singing and acting I still would focus on singing because that is ultimately my first dream in the business. I want to start what I finish. I only come in contact with the movie after I get into the business. I hope to treat it like a part of my interest, acting more after singing. Then I can have even great space in my screenplay selection." - SIU () 4. TA KUNG PAO, JANUARY 13 2008, LIGHT SHADOW PATH EVALUTING NEW KOREAN AND AMERICA FILM DIRECTIONS Now two Mainland big films THE WARLORDS (TAU MING JONG) and ASSEMBLY (GIT JAP HO) have exceeded 200 million at the box office. ASSEMBLY has become the box office champion and director Feng Xiaogang has become the first to hae three movies that exceeded 100 million box office in a row. THE WARLORDS opened first but the momentum was weaker than ASSEMBLY. The most important reason of course was its earlier release, not only has it accumulated a lot of box office but also has less freshness than new releases. Great word of mouth is the most important to ASSEMBLY's victory as everyone fights to recommend it. However, distribution strategy lies between victory and defeat. THE WARLORDS after three weeks of release has video product releases, thus its box office has made way to ASSEMBLY and its momentum faltered. If THE WARLORDS postponed is video product release date like LUST, CAUTION (SIK, GAI) the New Year big film competition would have been even more fierce. Film video products and online illegal download have become the biggest threats to film box office. In recent years Korea also has illegal film download trend, which perhaps has contributed to the Korean storm receding. Korea last year's total film box office was around US$1 billion (non officially), a decline of 5.5% from 2006 and the first drop in ten years. Korean film revenue dropped by 1/4 and occupied the 50.8% of the total box office of the year and almost an even split with foreign films. Luckily the highest box office was a Korean produced Los Angeles English film DRAGON WARS that won with US$58 million. TRANSFOMRERS came in third with US$50 million. Foreign films have gradually isen in Korea. No wonder two years ago Korean actors protested on the streets against the government loosening of foreign film release restrictions. In the past few years local film and foreign film competition was based on film quality. If their quality could not rival others even with restrictions no one could say much. U.S. films had a great harvest last year and created a new height of US$9.6 million that exceeded 2006 and 2002. SPIDER MAN 3, SHRED THE THIRD, TRANSFORMERS and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN AT WORLD'S END have surpassed over US$300 million. Last year 599 films were released, a 30% increase from 2006. Unfortunately last November the Writer's Guild strike for more copyright benefits has rocked the entire film and television world. Nearly 100 television programs and several dozen films have been affected. The Golden Global award ceremony cancellation has cost the NBC nearly HK$200 million. Because the writer's strike persists and has the support of colleagues (like actors) this year the U.S. film industry may fall into a crisis. No wonder Warner has announced nearly 1,000 terminations. The U.S. film's direction like any one film depends on how writers "think". - TIN LIK [ In Production Now/Soon ] Can : Ngor Dik Jui Oi Lit : My Most Beloved d.
