In this course of study we aimed not to fully answer the question of what faith is for every person but to instead focus on aspects and the logic of various individuals to expand our objective intellect while trying to apply these ideas to our personal lives. Serving as a guide to this intellectual encounter we examined two ways faith may be interpreted, in its secular form and in its Catholic (theological) form. In addition and as a result to this we recognized the contradictions, which were these ideas of Nihilism and Radicalism. To begin it is essential to introduce definitions that may have been formulated concerning secular and Catholic Faith. The secular definition of faith is "complete trust" (FRR p.91) which means "believing in something even though you do not possess an absolute certainty that you are correct" (FRR p.91). It is considered to be a "calculated risk" because youwe may not know when to trust an individual. The Catholic definition of Faith is "an intellectual assent to a loving God and His revelation" (FRR p.92). Through studies it may be true that we cannot fully explain its meaning but through our experiences and personal beliefs it is possible to come closer to gaining understanding. We realize this by thinking of Faith as various things that can become beneficial to our lives and allow us to grow into a greater willingness to do the Will of God. In contrast to these themes and beliefs are the ideas of Nihilism and Radicalism. Jointly these aspects basically means a doubt in all things that are considered true in our lives. Specifically Nihilism is a viewpoint that traditional values and beliefs are unfounded and existence is senseless and useless. Nihilists support their blief by focusing on ideas that the universe is "unintelligble" (FRR p.98) and in a "flux (continual change)" (FRR p.99). It is clearly evident that Faith, which is so important in our lives, is surprisingly viewed in various ways or simply not taken into account at all.
2.List and explain three of the most important ideas you want to remember from this week.
a)Faith is a grace- This is an idea mentioned above that Faith obtains the characteristic of grace, which Catholics believe to be a "supernatural gift" (FRR p.92) or a "free and undeserved help that God gives to us/" (FRR p.92).
b)Faith requires a free human response- Abother characteristic which highlights our role in the connection that faith introduces. It emphasizes the aspect of "free will" (FRRp.92) which God gave to us as a choice to willingly to choose him as our Lord or to not choose him. Our realtionship with God as with our earthly relationships, requires both (mainly us because God did a long time ago) parties to "freely choose to participate" (FRR p.92).
c) Faith:The Golden Way- This is important not only to myself but others who share or agree to the beliefs that I withhold. It is essentially saying that Faith, even though it is intangible, it is something that we must possess in order to show true love and trust towards God. It is beliefs supported by reasons.
