Release Date: September 14th, 2001 (moved back several months from May
18th, 2001) Not to Be Confused With: There is no connection to the recent HBO
cable-movie of the same title and subject, starring Jena Malone and Jeff
Daniels. MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for thematic elements, some language and crude
sexual references) Distributor: New Line Cinema Production Company: Bender/Spink (Stranger than the Wheel) Cast: Trevor Fehrman (Andrew Gurland), Elden Henson, Matthew Lawrence,
Martin Starr, Mary Tyler Moore, Maggie Lawson, Morris Panych, Jewel Staite,
Barbara Tyson Director: Andrew Gurland (dramatic debut of the codirector of Frat
House) Screenwriter: Andrew Gurland (debut) Based upon: Andrew Gurland loosely based his script upon his own
experiences in high school. One of the characters is even named "Andrew
Gurland." Premise: Four friends (Fehrman, Henson, Lawrence, Starr) cheat their
way through high school, making a high art of the process, only to find at the
end of four years that they've lost their friendship along the way. This has
been described as a teen version of Goodfellas, doing for cheating on
tests what Scorsese's film did for, you know, killing people and stuff. (Mary
Tyler Moore will play the principal who suspects there is cheating going on in
her school; Fehrman plays the leader of the group; Henson plays a chubby kid;
Lawrence plays a muscular kid; Starr plays an asthmatic kid). Official Premise: "Cheaters follows a group of four friends
as they lie, steal and cheat their way through an unjust school system. Handsome
Davis (Fehrman) is the ring-leader and group strategist. Along with Sammy
(Henson), Victor (Lawrence) and Applebee/the crib master (Starr), the guy who
writes crazy small, these four avowed rebels have elevated cheating to an
art-form. For them it has become an empowering act of vindication in the face of
academic tyranny and the ever-looming specter of failing grades." (quoted
from New Line Publicity) Filming: Production started on this movie on July 12th, 2000 in
Vancouver, and wrapped in early September, 2000. Official Site: CheatersMovie.com (the trailer's
available there) Also at Theaters: September 2001
