“We’re all in the gutter, but some of us look like stars.” – Oscar Wilde
The episode opened to the introduction of the first character Scott Barringer, who arrives home to find his bags packed and at the door. Looking at his father and stepmother, he started to run, but before he even reached the stairs he was knocked down, tied up and escorted to his father's car. It was at that point that we learn Scott was going to be sent to Mt. Horizon against his will by his father.
Meanwhile, hanging on a cliff we meet Peter Scarbrow, the administrator of Mt. Horizon. He then arrives back to Horizon after his mountain climb to find out that the school is in financial trouble and is facing foreclosure by the bank. It is also at that point where we meet Frank Markasian, the owner and creator of the school.
Scott finally reaches Horizon after a long drive with his father, guard, and stepmother who Scott apparently dislikes. Upon, his arrival, he meets Peter and we learn the reason why Scott's dad decided to send his son to Horizon. Mr. Barringer couldn't understand what suddenly changed his son, who was one of the best wide receivers in the state and was already being scouted by the best schools in the country.
Last, but not the least, we meet the rest of the cast. While on their wilderness quest we're introduced to Shelby Merrick, Augusto "Auggie" Ciceros, Ezra Friedkin, Juliette Waybourne, and Katherine Ann Cabot. Apparently each student had a reason for being at Mt. Horizon. And we’ve have only just begun to learn the troubles they will have to overcome.
Peter shows Scott around the school and informs him about the rules at Horizon. Scott starts to have a few flashbacks of him being seduced and his days as a wide receiver.
Meanwhile, Shelby dares Ezra to cross a condemned bridge and he falls, into the raging rapids. Hannah, one the counselors along with Auggie and Katherine rush to save Ezra.
The Cliffhangers return, as Shelby and Juliette take a liking in the new boy, Scott. Still uncomfortable at Horizon, Scott decides to run away into town. During his run through the woods, images of his father, his football days and his stepmother seducing him came flashing and echoing through his mind. As he reaches town, Scott finds a house and breaks in. Peter finally tracks down Scott at the house, only to find Scott trashing the house while being hysterical and frighten
The episode ends on a good note, with Peter asking Frank for permission to keep Scott even though he violated school rules. Peter senses something really bad had happened to Scott and wants to learn the truth so he could help the trouble boy.
