Faith Journal Entry

1) The key idea of the section "What is Faith?" is that faith is the "Golden Way." Nihilism is not a reasonable option becuase it is impossible to live according to its teachings. In fact, to have teachings contradicts the entire message of nihilism, which says "truth does not exist." Also, radicalism is not a reasonable option because it disregards reason. Thus, the balance between nihilism, reason, but no beliefs, and radicalism, beliefs, but no reason, is faith, beliefs supported by reason

2)a. The first idea that I want to remember from the section "What is Faith?" is the difference between the secular and catholic definitions of faith. The secular version is complete trust and belief in someone or something. The catholic version is an intellectual assent to a loving God and His revelation. Although there are similar aspects in each definition, the major difference is the absence of God or revelation. Having secular faith in God would qualify as catholic Faith.

2)b. The second idea that I want to remember from the section "What is Faith?" is that blind faith is foolish and irresponsible. Sometimes people say they believe in God because that is what they have been taught, and nothing has ever happened to challenge that belief. According to the book, though, you should use your reason that God gave you in order to prove to yourself that He exists. Believing in Him blindly with no evidence is not what he wants.
