Here is how we understand the creation of the universe.
Dao originates Ultimate Void, Wu Ji, that gives rise to the Infinite Universe, that differentiates into two polar energies, yin and yang, which will produce the relative world.

It is the world of synthesis, where we gather our first understanding that 1 + 1 = 2 is not entirely sufficient where it comes to metaphysical learning and experience.

Here all Numbers come into existence.

1 + 1 = 3 because Yang and Yin combined give a new phenomenon.
Warm and cold water together become a new energy, neither warm, nor cold. Man and woman give birth to a child, that is neither half its father, nor half its mother, but a new phenomenon in the universe.

Therefore, 1 + 1 = 3 is also inaccurate. It should be 1 + 1 = 1.

1 + 1 = 1 is not the complete equation also. The complete formulae:

Where 0 is the Dao, 1 is Wu Ji – or Eternal Void -, then yin and yang produce trinity, and 3 is the created phenomenon, or trinity.
Once we reached 3, we covered the entire range from 0 to 9.
6 is just 2 x trinity, 9 is 3 x trinity.
