KNIGHT, Robert, Mr., merchant, York, before 1643, [see testimony and letter in Mass Arch 38B, 48-55]. Took oath of allegiance to Mass govt 22 Nov 1652. Had letter of credit from Wrath Bathorne to his brother, Mr. Roger Bathorne, dated at Malago, 9 April 1647, for his occasions in New England or Newfoundland. [A.}He deposed 7 Dec. 1658 ae.abt. 71 yrs, and again 6 July 1671 ae. 86, as to what he heard Mr. Tho. Gerges say before he"he went for England,"--which is known to have been in 1643.[York De.I.] Gave land to his grandson John Redman, Jr. 18 Feb. 1666. his daughter Joanna m.Rowland Young: he gave land to grandson R.Y., Jr. 12 Aug. 1673, deed witnessed by the boy's sister Mary, who deposed as Mary Mowlton 24 June 1678. He died between 23 June the date of his will, and 24 Aug. 1676, when it was proved; beq. his "small estate" to his son Richard Knight, living in Boston.[Me Wills, 56 and York De III]

Dic. of ME & NH by Noyes; pare 405: "KNIGHT Samuel, Kit., 40 in 1699, received a grant of 15 acres at Great Cove 27 July 1676 from his father-in-law Richard Carle, whose wife Amy was certainly mother of Knight's wife Amy. Altho Carle claimed that he delivered this instrument while drunk, it was held good and Knight sold to Samuel Spinney in 1686. An educated man, he drew local deeds, poss. too freely as he was once accused of forgery. As tenant of Widow Jane Withers, he built and lived on her Spruce Creek land. Lists 287,330e. In 1682 he and his wife sold land which had been part of land of Edw. Clark, there being no explanation of their title."
His age was listed as 40 years old in 1689.

John Paul Jones, and was wounded in the fight with the Serapis [sp?] Sept. 23, 1779. He also served in Capt. Daniel's New Hampshire Artillery Company. He never married.

Daniel Knight b.abt.1755 d.Oct. 10, 1798 m.Jan. 9, 1782 Betsey Bradbury d/o Cotton and Ruth (Jenro?) Bradbury of York. She was b.Dec. 10, 1760 d.Dec. 10, 1833. He served in Capt. Daniel's NH Artillery Co. and later in the privateer Dalton under Capt. Ebanezer Johnson, which was captured by the British frigate Reasonable. He was confined on several prison ships and finally sent to Mill prison in England. In 1779, after being held prisoner two years and three months, he was take to France with other prisoners and exchanged. He then enlisted with Capt. John Paul Jones on the Alliance and was in the fight with the Serapis Sept. 23, 1779. he was discharged and returned to Kittery. While in Mill Prison, he made a list of the prisoners confined there, which is on file in the pension office at Washington DC. He held a commission as Lieutenant in the MA militia.

Andrew S. Knight joined the First Maine Heavy Artillery (1862-1865) and was in Company F of the 18th Maine Vol. Infantry. He was described as 5' 11", light complection, blue eyed, brown hair. Occupation: farmer. After his discharge he lived in Macwahoc (located in Aroostook County) Maine. See Andrew's Civil War Certificate.

Re: No Place for Little Boys page 2: "...Theair (sic) was ten of my company out on picket guard and Knight was with them and he thought he saw a rebel and fired and it turned out to be a horse and we had quite a laugh at him.
Ed's note: Andrew S. Knight, a 28-year-old married man from Carmel was wounded May 19th, 1864. He was discharged on June 13, 1865. Page 29...Knight said he was acquainted with Howse that sind that order..."

Bill Williams remarried and moved to Vinalhaven and raised a family there. Family story has been passed down of Vinalhaven Williams children visiting in Stonington and the Stonington Knight kids hoisting one of the Williams up to the top of the rafters in the barn and tying off the rope-- leaving him hanging there until his cries brought rescuers. Oh, my!]
