Hogwarts Code V1.0 by Honoria Glossop

Welcome to the official Hogwarts Code Interpretation Page. I have developed a Fan Code specifically for Harry Potter freaks like myself, and feel that it is necessary to explain what a Fan Code is in the first place, in order to give everyone a fair chance to understand what it is.

A code is written by someone who is obsessed with something, be it Space Ghost or Tiny Toons or Gundam Wing, for example. The code is simply a way to express to others who know the code your opinions on the subject or characters or unique things about the subject. Most of the code is abbreviated, and will look something like this:

“CHLv+++/-- CHFr+++++/- Bcos +++++” Pretty weird, huh? Well, interpreted properly, it means “Most of the time I really like Lavender Brown, but sometimes she really gets on my nerves. I’m in love with Fred Weasley, but his tricks can get kind of annoying. Chamber of Secrets is the best HP book so far.”

And that’s only a small portion of the code. The point is to take a character, book, or quote from the series and indicate how much you like it with +(plus symbols) and –(minus symbols). Those are called modifiers. There are other modifiers that apply to certain categories within the code in different ways.

For example:
? is to express puzzlement. “What’s that?”
* means that it is not applicable. Maybe you’ve never seen or heard of it.
# means you won’t give a specific answer to something. Like your age. :)
> “but I want to be.” (P---<++ means “I don’t have a webpage, but I’d really like a great HP page!”) Remember to make the little crocodile mouth eat the better one to indicate that it’s good.
/ “but sometimes.” (Dr++++/---- means “Most of the time I worship the ground Draco walks on, but sometimes I’d just like to hex him good with a binding curse.”) The first rating is always dominant, meaning you do it more than the second.

So let’s get started! Sometimes you will see a symbol next to a header, meaning that you ALWAYS put that symbol next to whatever you’re rating. Don’t worry, Fan Codes aren’t confusing, just read everything through before starting your own code and translation.

Well, first things first. You'll need to start your code with the version that is currently in circulation, which right now is V1.0. So first type "Hogwarts Code V1.0:" before you type any of your code. That lets people know what fancode you're using.

Characters (CH)

I’m sorry to say that I can’t remember every single character that comes along in the books. Don’t email me with some nasty flame about how I didn’t include so and so and how this is a very important character to the plot. This is a really long list, and I don’t recommend rating more than 5 or 6 characters at the most in your transcription. It is rather difficult to remember all the characters’ symbols, so be nice and JUST PUT FIVE OR SIX. For the sake of humanity, I beg you.
Just for kicks, I’ve tried my hardest to categorize them. The students should be first, with the adults following. None of them are in any particular order.

Hp: Harry Potter
Hr: Hermione Granger
R: Ron Weasley

That’s all I can think of right now. Please email me with any other names you can think of. I get to come up with the symbols, just notify me politely if I’ve forgotten anyone.

Ratings Example for Characters:

Be sure to remember to put CH before each character’s symbol. I know it’s really hard when you try to remember to do it, but it separates your opinion of one character to the next.
CHR+++++(or more): What restraining order?
CHR++++: I am hopelessly devoted to Ron!
CHR+++: Ron’s really cool!
CHR++: He’s one of my favourite characters.
CHR+: I like him.
CHR: Ron’s okay.
CHR-: He gets on my nerves.
CHR--: I wanna hex him!
CHR---: Someone oughta lock Ron up in the dungeons!
CHR----: …and throw away the key!
CHR-----(or more) What restraining order?

Books (B)

How much do you like the books in the series so far?
ss (or ps): Sorcerer’s Stone (Philosopher’s Stone)
cos: Chamber of Secrets
poa: Prisoner of Azkaban
gof: Goblet of Fire

Modifier example: Bgof? would mean “What’s the Goblet of Fire?” and Bgof* would mean “I haven’t gotten around to reading Goblet of Fire quite yet.”

Ratings Examples:
Bgof++++: Goblet of Fire is the best book ever written in the history of the English Language!
Bgof+++: I’ve read it ten times and the pages are started to get worn!
Bgof++: This is a really good book.
Bgof+: This book was pretty good.
Bgof: Eh, it was okay.
Bgof-: It wasn’t the best one so far.
Bgof--: I didn’t like it.
Bgof---: This book and I have issues with one another.
Bgof----: AUGH! What is the big freakin’ deal about this book? I didn’t GET IT!!!

Which houses do you like and not like? (H)

G: Gryffindor
R: Ravenclaw
H: Hufflepuff
S: Slytherin

Very simple. Just rate how much you like one or how much you don’t like another. Remember to put the H before each houses’ name.

Fanfiction This category has been divided into 4 sections.

If you have a penname you go by to write fanfiction, type it in full quotation marks.
Ex: “Honoria Glossop”

If you are working on a fanfiction that you want to shamelessly plug, type it in full in quotation marks as well. Ex: “The Magic Umbrella”

If you have a favourite fanfiction type the name in full in quotation marks.
Ex: “Draco Dormiens”

And now comes the hard part. Do you post fanfiction on fanfiction.net?

ff.n+++++: Posting fanfiction is my LIFE!
ff.n++++: It’s what I live for…
ff.n+++: I read and post frequently.
ff.n++: I read and post occasionally.
ff.n+: I’m a dedicated lurker.
ff.n: I read it sometimes.
ff.n-: I only read it when there’s nothing else to do.
ff.n--: I’m not subscribed to fanfiction.net
ff.n---: Fanfiction? What a waste of time!
ff.n----: I hate fanfiction!
ff.n-----: I despise fanfiction with a vengeance!
ff.n? What’s fanfiction.net?
ff.n* Woe is me, for I have writer’s block!

Who Will End Up With Who? (W)

This section is for those of us out there obsessed with certain peoples’ romances. This could be any one of our three boys with Hermione, (poor girl, she’s got so many options out there!), Professor McGonagall with Snape (WHO thought of that? :), Lily with James, or even (GASP!) Harry and Cho.
The procedure goes like this: Type a capital W, the first person’s symbol, a period (no spaces in between any of these), and the second person’s symbol.
Examples would be: WDr.Hr(Draco and Hermione), WR.Hr(Ron and Hermione), and WH.Hr(Harry and Hermione).
If you’re for some kind of romance that involves, say, Harry and some Muggle girl who transfers to Hogwarts in their 5th year, just put WH.HerNameHere. Don’t put symbols, it gets really confusing if the person doesn’t have a symbol on the list.

Ratings Examples:

WR.Hr+++++: Ron and Hermione’s love will steer the stars, guide the planets, and let the sunshine in! (Thanks to the Fifth Dimension’s AQUARIUS!)
WR.Hr++++: Ron and Hermione are DESTINED to be together!
WR.Hr+++: Ron and Hermione SHOULD be together!
WR.Hr++: They’d make a perfect couple!
WR.Hr+: Aww! They’re so married!
WR.Hr: I have no opinion either way.
WR.Hr-: Eh…it’s kind of creepy thinking about them together.
WR.Hr--: It wouldn’t work.
WR.Hr---: That’s not very kind to humanity.
WR.Hr----: EWWW! Noo!
WR.Hr-----: OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!
W? What’s the big deal over obsessing over who gets hooked up with who?
W* I don’t care who gets hooked up with who.

Do You Have a Harry Potter Related Webpage? (P) The title sums this one up. I’ve tried to make it as user-friendly as possible.

P++++: You bet I do! It’s got lots of great stuff you won’t find anywhere else!
P+++: Yeah! You’ll want to bookmark my site, it’s really cool!
P++: My page has some Harry Potter stuff on it.
P+: I have a page, but it only has a little bit of Harry Potter on it.
P: I have a webpage.
P-: My page has no Harry Potter stuff on it.
P--: Why would I put THAT on my webpage?
P---: I don’t have a webpage.
P----: I hate the internet!
P? What’s a webpage?
P--<++ I don’t have a Harry Potter webpage, but I’d like one.

Real Life Status (S) What’s your gender, what’s your age? Stuff we all know and luuuv.

Sm: Male
Sf: Female
S? What’s a gender? (Let’s hope everyone has an answer to this one…)
S- I don’t have a gender. (Suuuure ya don’t…)
S# I’m not telling you what my gender is.

Age follows gender very nicely.
Examples: Sf15 would be a 15 year old female. S#15 would be a 15 year old. Sf# would be a female.

What about your family and stuff? (F) We are family! I got all my sistahs in meeeeee!

Fs: Single
Fm: Married
Fd: Divorced
Fi: Involved
FL: Lookin
F# I ain’t gonna tell ya.
Modifier: k(#) is number of kids. So Fdk2 would be Divorced with 2 kids.

Where do you live? (L)
L stands for your location. The state or province you live in goes after the L, and then a period. After that type the abbreviation of the country you live in.

For example, mine would be Lok.us because I live in Oklahoma in the US of A. Now, for someone who lived in British Columbia up in Canada, the code would be Lbc.ca.

Modifiers: Pluses or minuses to show how much you like living where you are, and slashes indicate that you lived somewhere prior to where you are living now. However, if you like where you live sometimes and sometimes you don’t, just add pluses or minuses past a slash without adding another location code.

Example: Lok.us++/Lbc.ca+++ would mean “I like living where I am, which is in Oklahoma, but not nearly as much as I liked living in British Columbia before I moved here.”

Lok.us++/-- means “I like living in Oklahoma, but sometimes it gets really irritating.”

How Much are You Into Computers? (C) This one explains itself well.

C++++: We are celebrating our love for one another by getting married.
C+++: I dream about my computer and miss it when I go to work or school.
C++: It’s really great!
C+: I like it a lot.
C: I have a computer.
C-: Eh, they’re okay. I guess.
C--: Computers are evil.
C---: I hate computers!
C----: Computers are trying to take over the world! We must save ourselves!
C? What’s a computer?
Modifiers: p is for PC, m is for Macintosh, a for Amiga, at for Atari, ? for “What’s the difference?” and * for “Whatever’s available is fine with me.”

A Sample Code and Translation:

Hogwarts Code V1.0: CHHp+ CHHr++ CHR++ CHDr--/++ CHLu++ CHPr+++++ Bgof++++ HG++ HS--- “Honoria Glossop” “The Magic Umbrella” ff.n++++ WR.Hr+++++/WDr.Hr++ WHp.Hr---- WPr.Vivian Hemmingway+++++++ P+++ Sf16 FL Lok.us++/- C+++pc/*

Translation:

I’m using the Hogwarts Code version 1.0. I like Harry Potter okay, I think Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley are really neat, sometimes I like Draco Malfoy, other times I’d like to throw him to a pack of wild Blast-Ended Skrewts. I like Remus Lupin, and I’m in love with Percy Weasley. Duh.
My favourite book so far is the Goblet of Fire. I root for Gryffindor and hiss the Slytherins. My penname is Honoria Glossop, I’m working on (and shamelessly plugging) a fic I call “The Magic Umbrella”. I have a bad case of writer’s block.
Most of the time I believe Ron and Hermione’s love will sing along with the Fifth Dimension, but lately I’ve been warming up to Draco/Hermione fics (Get MAD, baby!). Harry and Hermione will only get together once I am cold in my grave, and when that happens I will most certainly turn over in that 6 foot deep plot of dirt. Oh, Percy and Vivian Hemmingway are destined to be in each other's company forever, too. Dreamy sigh.
I have a great Harry Potter site I am very proud of. I am a single 16 year old female living in Oklahoma, which is okay but gets annoying sometimes because everyone thinks we’re all a bunch of hicks and we’re NOT! At least I’m not. I love my pc but don’t care what kind of computer is in front of me as long as it has the internet.
