"To you, Sons of Confederate Veterans, we submit the vindication of the cause for which you fought. To your strength will be given the defense of the Confederate soldier's good name, the guardianship of his history, the emulation of his virtues, the perpetuation of those priciples which he loved and made him glorious, and which you also cherish and respect. Remember it is your duty to see that the true history of the South is presented to future generations." General Stephen D.Lee New Orleans, Louisiana April 24, 1906 |

Thanks to all our members and public who attended the Memorial Service on Saturday,Feb. 25th in Tupelo. Adjutant Bobby Kitchen has given this restoration project 110% of his time and money to see that this project was fulfilled. On Saturday the 25th, the S.C.V. Camp #645 held a memorial service for one of our Confederate Compatriots. In this service, was the dedication of his resting place, and acknowledgment of his service to the C.S.A., and the Military head Stone to be placed soon. Thanks to some concerned citizens and our Camp Members, this project was a success! Thanks. |

CAMP NEWSLETTER Vol. I, Issue. II A REAL ORIGINAL SON Did you know that Harrisburg Camp 645 has on it's role as a Life Member, an Original Son! Yes indeed we do. Mr. Sam young of Verona, Mississippi. His Fatherfought at The Battle of Harrisburg and was a Confederate Veteran! To have such a direct link is remarkable. We should endeavor to see to it that Mr. Young is able to come to some of our meets. SPECIAL NEWS Commander In Chief Susupended From Office With 3 Others!!! It is with much worry that I report about the Fraternal fratricidal conflict within the NATIONAL S.C.V. at Columbia, Tn National HQ. If you recall this issue was brought to our attention at the last 2 Camp Meets by John Echols of Southaven, Ms. in January and Brigade Commander, Dr. Micheal Warren in Febuary. There has been a Major split brewing for months between CIC Dennis Sweeney elected by SCV membership vote and the General Executive Council (GEC) a permanate installed board of PAST CIC office holders. At issue, as explained to me, is the Future Direction of the SCV. Whether to be more Proactive and Politically involved or to take a more Historical/Heritage role like the SCV has traditionally done in the past. Others say that the GEC doesn't want to give up any power or prestige to a SCV membership growing increasingly restless. There has been a terrible amount of cross accusation, dismissal, suspension, etc by both sides but so far it has resulted in 1. CIC Dennis Sweeney, 2.Chief SCV Adjutant, 3. SCV Chaplain in Chief and 4. Editor in Chief of the Confederate Veterans all being SUSPENDED FROM OFFICE! This was done on Febuary 16, 2005, ironically one day prior to our last Febuary meeting on Feb. 17th. These Suspensions were carried out by the GEC sometimes known as the "Old Guard". The GEC obtained a Tennessee Chancery Court Ruling to reinforce their move. This description of what has happended is a simple overview of an extremely complex issue but the SCV is now in control by the GEC with NO ELECTED Commander in Chief, No Adjutant, and No Chaplain or Editor! All of both sides grievance and moves are being openly discussed on the internet and 20 of 29 State Divisions are lining up behind Commander Dennis Sweeney. However, it should be noted that John French, Mississippi Division Commander is with the GEC. However, how our division will go on this is anybody's guess. What is really bothersome is that the SCV's dirty laundry is being aired all over the internet to ourdetriment and to the glee of our enemies and this, when our financial position is strong, and our membership age is at it's youngest. It is certain to me that a Mojor Crisis is at hand! It is also certain that the SCV has experienced a Coup led bythe Old Guard/GEC resulting in a ousting of 4 Top Leaders who were DUTIFULLY ELECTED BY POPULAR VOTEAT THE LAST NATIONAL MEETING! We need to take a position at the next Camp Meet Thursday March 17. andlet our position be known to the GEC. Several individual camps in Mississippi have already sent communiques to the GEC demanding thatCommander in Chief Dennis Sweeney be reinstated. Bill Stroup Harrisburg Camp 645 Tupelo, Mississippi |
