Personal Statement

I am a transfer student pursuing a master degree in accounting at the University of Missouri, Columbia, with plans to get a CPA certificate. I have a bachelor¡¯s degree in housing and interior from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, and had attended at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, 1999 - 2000.

Before I moved to the USA, I worked as a reporter and editor, advertising and PR manager and market researcher. Working in many areas for 14 years, I had many various job experiences. I reported about many economic development fields researching housing and resort markets both at home and abroad. I am familiar with marketing, advertising, and PR fields, so I could have been trained as a manager.

Even though I had to support my husband (a doctoral student at the School of Journalism) and my two sons (6 and 8 years), I want to study a new field here. In order to expand my career opportunities, I decided to study accounting. While working in Korea, I always felt the lack of accounting knowledge. I wanted to understand investing, financing and budgeting. I became interested in domestic and international monetary systems, after losing a sizable sum of savings when the Asian monetary crisis hit Korea.

Now, I have two final goals in studying at the University of Missouri, Columbia. The first is to get a master¡¯s degree in accounting. The second is to acquire a CPA license. I am now taking some prerequisite courses required for the master¡¯s studies and CPA exam. Getting a master¡¯s degree in accounting and getting a CPA license both will help me to get a better job after I return to Korea. It has been a long time since I was last a college student, but I believe my work experience has prepared me to do well in the studies I¡¯m pursuing now.1 1
