Why was GWTW...?

This page will be a question and answer page, as well as a page to try to explain the phenomenon of GWTW .

Gone With the Wind was a box-office hit from the beginning, but why? Psychologists would probably say it was to most women because Scarlett represented the "liberated woman" with a fiery spirit and a passion for life. Others would say because of the depression and the excitement the movie brought. But, indeed, it was Scarlett's passion, the representation of liberty at any cost, because of the depressing times and how WWI and WWII had paralleled with the times of the novel and movie, and of the love story that gripped the hearts of the world of the day. Even though the Catholic Legion of Decency refused the movie saying that it was, "Morally objectionable for all", people still flooded to see it. They also objected to, "...the low moral character, principals, and behavior of the main characters depicted in the film; suggestvie implications; the attractive portrayal of the immoral character of a supporting role in the story". Perhaps they speak of Belle Watling? But still, people lined up and waited for hours and hours in line at the movie theatres to see the hit movie. Maybe because of the fame? Maybe because of Scarlett's triumphant spirit? All of the above, possibly? Different people have different reasons for wanting to see the movie and different people have different reasons for wanting to come back and see it again. The phenomenon can't be explained. It simply is.
