Shinji practices with Unit 01. He goes to school after he takes out the trash for Misato. Ritsuko calls Misato. It has been two weeks since Shinji arrived at Tokyo 3 and Misato worries because he has no friends. Ritsuko theorizes about the Hedgehog Dilemma. Shinji sees Rei at school. Suzuhara Toji tells Kensuke about his sister being in the hospital and having to take care of her. Shinji's teacher lectures about the Second Impact in 2000 AD. Someone asks Shinji if he's Unit 01's pilot, and he says 'yes'. Everyone in the class goes crazy. Toji hits Shinji. Kensuke excuses Toji and Shinji tells him he didn't pilot Unit 01 by choice. Toji hits him again. They get an emergency call because of another Angel attack and Rei says she'll go. Tokyo 3 transforms for attack. Everyone is sent to shelters. The fourth angel appears and Shinji goes out in Unit 01. Toji and Kensuke sneak out using the excuse that they're going to the bathroom. Shinji fires his gun at the Angel and is sent a spare. He runs and Unit 01's umbilical cord is cut. Unit 01 is tossed into a hill, barely missing Toji and Kensuke. Shinji protects them and takes them into the cockpit. Shinji does his 'mustn't run away' chant and goes berserk. He attacks the Angel while three of the Angel's tentacles stick out from Unit 01's chest. Shinji kills the Angel with no time to spare and Unit 01 freezes. Shinji misses school for three days and Toji worries about him. Kensuke gives Toji Shinji's phone number.
