Shinji goes out to fight the Angel in Unit 01 and trips. Shinji's arm is broken in the fight and he is slammed against a wall. Suddenly, he wakes up in a hospital room. Unit 01's head is shown being lifted out of a pile of wreckage by a crane. Rei is wheeled past Shinji on a bed. Misato talks to Ritsuko. More parts of Unit 01 are shown being lifted by cranes. Misato leaves to get Shinji and they run into Mr. Ikari. Shinji was planning on living alone, but Misato insists that he stays with her instead. Misato goes shopping for groceries, and then takes Shinji to see the buildings of Tokyo 3 rise after the Angel attack. Misato tells Shinji that he saved Tokyo 3. Misato takes him to their apartment which she describes as a 'little messy'. (It closely resembles a toxic waste dump.) They have dinner and decide on a schedule for chores by playing rock, paper, scissors. While going to take a shower, Shinji meets Pen Pen, Misato's pet penguin, for the first time. Shinji stays in his room listening to the same two tracks. Ritsuko calls Misato while Misato is taking a bath. Shinji wonders why he's there and remembers the fight with the Angel. Unit 01 falls silent and goes out of control. It reactivates as Shinji goes berserk. The Angel sets up a AT field, but Unit 01 erodes it. Unit 01 attacks and the Angel self-destructs. Unit 01 walks away in it's 'true form'. An eye appears and Shinji screams. (end flashback) Misato enters Shinji's room to check on him and tells him he should be proud.
