In the year 2015 AD, Tokyo is attacked by an Angel. Katsuragi Misato, Head of Operations at NERV, goes to pick up the third children, Ikari Shinji. The Angel attacks near where Shinji is waiting as Misato arrives. Misato's car rolls over and Misato tries to protect Shinji from getting hurt. The Angel is attacked, but nothing phases it. Misato brings Shinji to NERV Headquarters. Ikari Gendou, the Chief Commander of NERV, promises to defeat the Angel and activate Unit 01. Shinji sees his father (Gendou) for the first time in over three years. Akagi Ritsuko plans for Shinji to pilot Evangelion Unit 01 since the other pilot, Ayanami Rei is injured. Shinji protests that he can't pilot it, and the Angel continues to attack Tokyo 3. Mr. Ikari sends Rei to pilot Unit 01. The Angel attacks NERV Headquarters. Shiji is almost hurt when a panel of ceiling lights fall above him, but Unit 01's hand reaches out to block the lights. After seeing Rei's condition, Shinji agrees to pilot Unit 01 and is sent out to fight the Angel.
