Our Hawaiian Island Adventure

by Bethany Stofko, Teen Troop 265

In July, my troop joined other girls from Ocean County on a trip to Hawaii. Mrs. Houser’s troop from Barnegat went also. Was Hawaii fun! Our group had a lot of energy and you could feel it. On our first full day, we were on the island of Oahu. Thanks to our bus driver, Cousin Tiny (who wasn’t very tiny!) we visited the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, the Iolani Palace, and the Punchbowl Cemetery, while learning some Hawaiian words in the process.

Tiny really kept us interested and entertained. Later that day we went to a luau. We saw pork prepared the island way, made leis, and learned how to hula. Some of us even tried poi (yuck!). We also had a free day. Some girls learned to surf, while others shopped or swam on Waikiki Beach.

Then we flew to Maui. There was swimming, snorkeling and shopping in Lahaina and at Whaler’s Village. Some of us visited the art galleries and the Whaler’s Museum. One morning, we got up at 2:30AM to see the sun rise over the volcano. Trust me, it was freezing!

We flew again to Hawaii, the “Big Island”. We took a looong bus ride around the island and saw the rain forest, waterfalls and a lava tube. We walked on an actual lava field. It looks so much like the moon’s surface that the astronauts trained there! At the Blank Sand Beach, we saw a live sea turtle.

The Hawaii trip was the best! Even though we had to get up early, spend nearly 30 hours traveling home, and get our luggage several days later, everyone was a good sport. I feel that the trip was well worth the 2 years we spent raising money to go. I can’t wait to say aloha to Hawaii again sometime.
