IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS OF MRVC
i. To develop co-ordinated plans and implement the rail infrastructure projects,
ii. integrate urban development plan for Mumbai with rail capacity and propose investments,
iii. undertake commercial development of Railway land and air space,
iv. co-ordinate and facilitate improvements of track drainage and removal of encroachments and trespassers
v. co-ordinate with organisations operating the train services and responsible for protection of Railway’s right of way and urban development
vi. Co-ordinate with PMMU for purposeful R&R of project Affected persons

Considering the crucial role of the suburban rail network in the development of the development of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Govt. of India and Govt. of Maharashtra have jointly formed the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) to develop coordinated plans for the development of the suburban rail network and the implementations of the needed infrastructure projects.
MRVC will be implementing the following projects
1) 5th line bet. Santacruz and Borivli on WR
2) Extra pair of lines between Kurla-Thane
3) Borivli-Bhayander additional pair of line
4) Bhayander-Virar additional pair of line
5) Optimisation of Western Railway
6) Optimisation of Central Railway
7) 5th line Kurla-Dadar-CSTM
8) WR 6th line Borivli-Santacruz
9) WR 12 car rake on local line
10) Optimisation of Harbour line
11) Central Railway 12 car rake on local line
12) East-West Bandra-Kurla link
13) DC-AC Conversion
14) EMU Remanufacture
That will provide the Mumbai commuter the benefits of increased comfort and improved frequency and reliability of suburban services.
The projects are likely to cost Rs. 6000 crores and are proposed to be completed within a challenging time frame of 7-8 years.
