Sir,
By letter to you of the 17th instant, No. 19, will have
aquainted my Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty with the reports
which reached this place of the loss of His Majesty's ship
Penelope.
Captain Galloway with the officers and remainder of his crew,
arrived here yesterday from Gaspé in two transports and I have the
honor to enclose to you for their Lordships further information,
his report of the malencholy accident by which that ship was
wrecked.
The representation made by Captain Galloway of the general
insubordination which prevailed amongst the crew has induced me to
solicit that His Excellency Gordon Drummond, the Commander of the
Forces, will give circular orders to search for and arrest those
men who have so shamefully deserted from their Officers and
Commander, and, to offer a more considerable reward than is usually
given for apprehending seamen.
In my letter No. 19, I informed you that the Government
schooner had been ordered to proceed to the assistance of the
Penelope, and, that I had likewise directed Lieutenant Scott, (late
Lieutenant with Commander Sir James Yeo), to proceed for the same
purpose in the transport schooner Lady Delaval. They are
not yet returned and Captain Galloway informs me he had seen
nothing of them, but, as we have information that two transports
and a merchant brig are likewise wrecked in entering the River, it
is probable they are delayed in giving them assistance. |
