P.S. --- Since penning the foregoing items Capt W J Matthews and First Lieut R B Hammer have arrived at Fort Walla Walla from Fort Lapwai, which post they left on the 14th instant, with eighteen men of Company F, Oregon cavalry. The men are to be transferred to company A same regiment. Lieut Hammer leaves (this) Monday morning for Fort Vancouver to be mustered out of service --- the cavalry regiment being consolidated into three or four companies. Capt Matthews took command of the Post today We learn that a petition numerously signed has been sent to the proper military department respectfully representing the injurious consequences which would flow from the withdrawal of troops from Fort Walla Walla and the abandonment of the place.
