Bloat | ||||
In 2005 a Nubian doe of ours got bloat. She would not eat or get up and she was huge looking. She was very bloated. When a goat has bloat, the right side of their stomach will be big and squishy (gas), and their left side will be hard (not airy). We gave this doe 40 cc of canola oil and 40 cc of baking soda and molasses water with a syringe orally. This treatment was for a standard size Nubian, so if you are dealing with a smaller sized goat, the amount may be less. Even if you get a little too much in a goat, it will not make her sick. Within a few hours of treatment, she was doing a little bit better. And by the next day, she was pretty much all the way better. The baking soda helps break down the gas and let it out. The oil, helps somehow like that. . .not sure exactly how though. We have heard of tubing goats that have bloat if it is really bad, or even poking a hole in their side to let the gas out, but, NEVER try doing any of those things unless you are experienced, or have a vet or someone else who has done this before with you or instructing you how to do it. Those two methods are only a need when it is really bad and is a mega emergency. If one of your goats has bloat, then we suggest you should get to it and give them the treatment above. Goats, if left untreated, can die from bloat. So this is not a thing to blow off and say, ÒIÕll deal with her later.Ó There is also a product call Therabloat that many goat people keep on hand for situations like this. |
