The Wolbrueck's of Texas

My mother, Gladys Marie Wolbrueck Havel is the eldest daughter of Julius Arthur Wolbrueck(1910-1978) and Dora M. Krueger Wolbrueck (1913-present) of Taylor, Texas. The Wolbrueck family have been in central Texas for over 100 years. The first sign of Wolbrueck's of our lineage in the United States is most likely my great-great grandfather August Wolbrueck, born 3/12/1851 in Germany, although we have not been able to document with any certainty their actual arrival date. The Wolbrueck's (paternal) and the Krueger's (maternal) were cotton and maize farmers in Williamson County, Texas.

My grandfather, Julius A. "Arthur" Wolbrueck was very quiet man with a dry sense of humor. His greatest claim to fame with his grandchildren was defying the jaws death by jamming a combine before it sliced him up. This accident happened in 1965. He spent nearly a month in the hospital recovering from the deep lacerations he received. After hearing this story, I spent most of my childhood avoiding the combine, afraid it would start up and eat me, too.

Julius Arthur Wolbrueck died peacefully at home at age 65 in 1978. He is preceded in death by his brother Edward Wolbrueck and sister Katherine Wolbrueck Mares and he is survived by his brother Louis Wolbrueck. Notice a trend here? My grandfather and his brothers and sister were all named after kings and queens.

Dora M. Krueger Wolbrueck, my grandmother, stayed on the family farm for some time after her husband died, but now resides in a nursing care facility in Taylor, Texas. The family gathered to celebrate Dora's 90th birthday August 2nd, 2003.

J. A. "Julius" Wolbrueck, Jr. built his home next door to his parents' on the family farm and currently resides there with his wife, Hanna and their four children, Sam, Carrie, Matt and Jacob. Julius also has two sons from a previous marriage, Eric and Joshua, who now reside in the Dallas, Texas area.

My great-grandparents were Herman Wolbrueck (1878-1962) and Annie Krochewsky Wolbrueck (1880-1962). They were fortunate enough to not only celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary, but share that celebration with their brother and sister. George Krochewsky (Annie's brother) married Herman's sister, Anna. In a remake of the double wedding ceremony of 1903, the Wolbrueck's and Krochewsky's celebrated this very unique landmark with both sides of the family along with much of the Taylor farming community with much granduer.
