About Us

We were a present given by Ghislaine's silly boyfriend Will. He gave Ghislaine 2 little Dwarf Hamsters and a beautiful cage (with another small carrying cage too) as a Christmas present to her. Ghislaine says that it's the best present she's ever gotten. She was really quite surprised to find a Safari Habitrail hamster cage behind all that wrapping paper (the first package she opened), then followed by the 2 of us in the small carrying cage. Look below for more about each one of us.

More about us...

Origin of Our Names
Ghislaine chose the names Bernard and Bianca because she named us after the two brave little mice in Disney's The Rescuers. It's a Walt Disney classic and one of Ghislaine's favourites. Bernard the hamster has grey hairs like Bernard the mouse in The Rescuers. Also, Miss Bianca the mouse in The Rescuers is a white elegant lady, just like Bianca the hamster. And so it was very much suited to be perfect names for us :)

Our Cage
We live in a Habitrail Safari cage. It's really a wonderful cage. Just enough room for the two of us. There's an exercise wheel, a look-out deck, and lots of horizontal bars to climb on. Here is a sample of what our cage looks like (this is the info sheet that came with the cage when it was purchased).

Books
If you are interested in reading more about Hamsters and Dwarf Hamsters, here are two good books that Ghislaine highly recommends.

Hamsters

Hamsters by Otto von Frisch. Barron's Educational Series
The one I have is an older version, but the newer version is out in stores. Very good hamster owner manual. Lots of good tips.

A Step-by-Step Book About Dwarf Hamsters

A Step-by-Step Book About Dwarf Hamsters by Chris Henwood. T.F.H Publications
This book focuses more on the dwarf hamster. Some interesting and useful facts. But not too detailed in general.
