Government of Pakistan Honours AKU’s President Kassim-Lakha and Dr. Mohammad Khurshid with Prestigious Civil Awards The President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf, honoured Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, President and founding trustee of Aga Khan University, by conferring on him the prestigious Civil Award of Hilal-i-Imtiaz at the investiture ceremony in Islamabad on March 23, 2003. |
Defence or General Service Medal (Pakistan) (Tamgha-i-Diffa) - Established in 1947 in cupro-nickel. The obverse has the slanting crescent and star of Pakistan partly surrounded by a wreath, and the reverse is plain with a smaller circle in the centre, possibly intended for an inscription. It hangs from its ribbon by a foliated clasp similar to that of the India General Service Medals of 1908 and 1936. A bar inscribed KASHMIR 1948 has been issued. (Ref: "Ribbons and Medals" by H. Taprell Dorling, Edited and Revised by Alec A. Purves.).
Naming of Campaign Stars and Medals for WWII - For Pakistan (and India, etc.), campaign stars and medals for WWII were almost always named, officially. I have hardly ever seen a legitimate group which has not been named. (Some replacement medals sneak in at times unnamed, but they should be the exception.) Somehow (and I have theories why), this has rarely been noted in all the standard references. (Ref: Ed Haynes e-mail)

Puts off gallantry award case Justice Shabir Akhtar of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday put off until November 19 a petition from a policeman seeking a gallantry award for spotting a wanted man. The court had asked the Punjab advocate general to appear yesterday, but he could not come because he was busy. Vehari District Police Officer Javed Hussain Shah says he helped arrest Riaz Basra, a proclaimed offender and religious extremist, and was thus entitled to the price on Mr Basra’s head and to a gallantry award. The assistant advocate general said on Tuesday though Mr Shah had been very brave in helping catch the criminal, his promotion to DPO was reward enough. The court was not satisfied with this and summoned the advocate general to court. Daily Times 15 Nov 03

Judgement on gallantry award reserved Justice Shabir Akhtar of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday reserved his judgment on a petition from the district police officer (DPO) Vehari, Javed Hussain Shah, seeking a gallantry award. Earlier, the police told the court that after discussing the matter in detail at the departmental level, the matter had been conveyed to the Punjab chief minister, who was looking into it for appropriate action. The petitioner through barrister Azam Nazir Tarar, said that he had helped security agencies spot Riaz Basra, a wanted criminal, with a price on his head , and was thus entitled to the head money as well as a gallantry award. The assistant advocate general said that the petitioner had already been promoted to DPO and therefore was not entitled to any gallantry award for his undoubted bravery. However, the court said nobody who served his country,as the DPO had, should be ignored. Daily Times 13 Dec 03
