Carabinieri Corps - Honours - List of medals awarded to members of the Corps
The Order of the Annunziata - Until the fall of the monarchy in 1943 this Order, instituted in 1362 as the "Order of the Collare", or Collar, was the highest Italian honour and consisted of fifteen knights only. Its holders had the title of "Cousins of the King", and took precedence over all other state officials. The statutes were revised several times, and it was Charles III, in 1518, who decreed that it should be known as the "Annunziata". On state occasions knights formerly wore a costume of white satin beneath a cloak or purple velvet embroidered in gold: but these fell into disuse, and in later times the insignia consisted of a golden collar worn round the neck from which hung an ornamental open-work gold badge representing the Annunciation, together with a gold and silver star surrounded by eight groups, each of seven golden rays, with, in its centre, the same design as the badge. The order corresponded to some extent to an Order of the Garter, and was rarely awarded. (Ref: Ribbons and Medals by Dorling).
Order of Constantine (Parma) - One of Europe's Oldest Orders. Historians disagree as to the exact date of founding. Some say it was founded by Constantine the Great in 313 A.D., others give credit to Byzantine Emperor Isaac II in 1190 A.D. This Order has also been referred to as the Order of Saint Angelus, the Order of the Golden Chevaliers, and the Military Order of Constantine of Saint George. On July 27, 1697 Francis the First, Duke of Parma, reactivated the Order and became the Grand Master. Under his control the Order came into high repute because of the rules he observed in its distribution. It was abolished by Joseph Bonaparte in 1806 but was revived in 1814 and remained in existence until the unification of Italy in 1861. The Order was awarded for outstanding civil or military merit and came in five classes. Is sometimes classed as a Sicilian order after 1806. (Republica Italiana) replaced the Savoy Cross and the date 1947 was added to 1885, below the swords. Gold and silver stars replaced the crowns on the service ribbons. The order is bestowed for outstanding military merit and can be awarded to foreigners. Comes in five classes as follows: Grand Cross Grand Officer Commander Officer (Pictured here) Knight. |
Medal of Merit for the Liberation of Rome, 1870 (Italy) - The official name is "Medaglia al Benemeriti della Liberazione di Roma 1870. It was the subject of an official decree dated 25 March 1911, allowing the concession for the award to be accepted by officers. This was an unofficial City award in one class only – Bronze. Civil Order of Savoy (Ordine Civile di Savoia): This now obsolete order was founded at Turin, Italy on October 29, 1831, by Charles Albert (1798-1849), King of Sardinia and Savoy. The object of the Order was to reward " those of other professions, not less useful than that of the army, who have become through long and profound study the ornaments of the State to which they have rendered important service." In other words, it was awarded for exceptional acts and services in public administration, in the literary field, arts and public education. There was but one class known as Knights (Cavaliere), limited to seventy, who ranked after Knight Commander of the Order of the Crown of Italy, and was seldom conferred on foreigners. The Badge of the Order is a light blue Savoy cross edged with gold. The medallion on the obverse is white with a gold rim; in the center are the initials of the founder, C.A. The reverse has AL MERITO CIVILE 1831, in gold lettering on a white field on the center medallion. No Star. The ribbon is moire, three equal stripes, light blue with white on either side. El Alamein: Ciampi, Gold Medal fo Cacciadominioni The President of the Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, at the Ministry of Defence's proposal, has given the Posthumous Army Gold Medal for Bravery to Colonel Paulo Cacciadominioni, for the following reasons: "Already commander of the 31st Corps of Engineers Battalion at the battle of El Alamein, after the end of the Second World War carried out for the next 12 years the important and difficult mission of looking for the bodies of soldiers of every nation spread out in the Egyptian desert sand, headless of the difficulties, of the sacrifices and of the risks it always brought. With awareness and a high level of technical-military preparation, courage and disdain for the danger, he personally conducted the searches in still live mine fields, in the course of which he was involved twice in explosions, following which a subordinate was seriously injured and six Bedouin helpers lost their lives. Thanks to his work, more than 1500 Italian bodies lost in the desert, together with more than 300 hundred of other nationalities were found, together with another 1000 nameless ones, were identified and returned with the others, to the memory, compassion, and love of their nearest and dearest. Moreover, 4814 lie today at the Italian Military Chapel at El Alamein, which he planned and built, passing on their exploits and the memory to future generations. Commander, engineer, architect, writer, and artist, many times decorated for Military Valour, has left a trace of himself in all of his work, from which the Italian army has gained great honour, the highest prestige for the country, and deep comfort for the pain of the international community, severely tried by the grief of war." El Alamein (Western Egyptian Sahara, 1942-1962". (AGI) (Oct 02)
