The veterans, some sprightly, some in wheelchairs, added the new medal to blazers already festooned with awards and colours signifying their role in conflicts. scotsman.com 5 Jun 04

France honours WWII colonial veterans More than 50 Africans were decorated with France's highest award, the Legion of Honor, during ceremonies commemorating the 60th anniversary of Operation Dragoon - the amphibious landings in southern France that came 10 weeks after D-Day in Normandy. History books on the African troops who helped liberate France are hard to come by and sons of soldiers like Kalidou Gadio, 47, say they have struggled to study their fathers' role in battles alongside the Americans, British and French. "I'm very disappointed," said Gadio, who videotaped the decoration of his 83-year-old father, Hamady, of Mauritania. "I've been looking for information about what they did, where they went - but many of these people didn't read, they didn't write. People like my father who fought here - nobody hears about them." The leaders attending came from Algeria, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, Comores, Djibouti, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Niger, Senegal and Togo. theaustralian.news.com.au 16 Aug 04 |
France Honours British Heroes of 'The Other D-Day' Representatives from six other countries – mainly former French colonies in Africa – France thanked British and American veterans of Operation Dragoon for their fearless role in what is best known as “The Other D-Day”. The operation came 10 weeks after the bigger, bloodier Normandy invasion of June 6, 1944, and pushed German troops into a closing Allied pincer movement. The weekend of official remembrance began in La Motte, a small town north of Saint Tropez – the first to be liberated. Operation Dragoon started 60 years ago, on August 15, 1944, when more than 9,000 British and American paratroopers jumped from Allied planes into the pre-dawn sky to pave the way for the amphibious landings in an assault by some 350,000 soldiers. Officials bestowed France’s most prestigious award, the Legion d’honneur, on nine British veterans. Nine American veterans were being honoured later at Rhone American cemetery, where 861 US soldiers are buried, near Draguignan. Unlike the Normandy landings, some 200,000 of the troops who stormed ashore in the south were from France’s Africa army, made up of men from its colonies. African heads of state will make up the majority of leaders present Sunday when President Jacques Chirac honours the soldiers of Operation Dragoon. news.scotsman.com 14 Aug 04

Pierre Clostermann Pierre "Clo Clo" Clostermann, the second world war French fighter ace, author, engineer, politician and deep-sea fisherman, who has died aged 85, did not court controversy, but it followed unerringly in his mercurial slipstream. His claim of 33 "kills" during a war fought from the cockpits of RAF Spitfires and Tempests has been refuted many times. Clostermann flew every possible Spitfire duty, in MkVs and MkVIIIs, from fighter sweeps, bomber escort missions, dive bombing raids and attacks on ground targets, among them V1-rocket launch pads on the French coast, and against German defences on D-day. He was one of the first French pilots to land on home soil - at Longues-sur-mer, Normandy, where on June 6 2004 he attended a ceremony as a road was named after him. Clostermann continued to fly fighter sorties into occupied France until he was forced to rest, with a DFC and a posting to the Free French air force headquarters. In December 1944. Wounded in the leg by German flak on March 24 1945, Clostermann was back in action after a week in hospital, flying his well known Tempest, Le Grand Charles. He was promoted leader of 3 squadron RAF, and provisional commander of 122 Wing. He was awarded a bar to his DFC. His other wartime awards included the American Silver Star, the Croix de Guerre, with 19 palms, and the Grand-Croix of the Légion d'honneur. He was appointed a compagnon de la libération, having flown 432 combat sorties and destroyed at least 18 enemy aircraft. He also destroyed 225 trucks, 72 locomotives, five tanks and two torpedo boats. guardian.co.uk 28 Mar 06
France honours former AU mission commander Okonkwo France has conferred on the former Commander of the African Union (Peacekeeping) Mission in Sudan (AMIS), Nigerian Major General Festus Okechukwu Okonkwo the French National Order of Merit Award with rank of Commander for his contributions to peace in Sudan and Liberia. In a citation read at the ceremony at the French Embassy in Abuja, French ambassador Yves Gandeul said the award recognises Gen. Okonkwo`s "prominent roles" in peacekeeping operations, especially in Liberia, under the Economic Community of West African States peacekeeping force (ECOMOG) between 1994 and 1996, which earned him the nickname `hurricane` for his "outstanding professional and personal qualities". The citation also recognised the Nigerian General`s role during the ECOMIL and UNMIL operations in 2003 and 2004. The first batch of 500 Nigerian troops landed in Darfur, Sudan, in August 2005 amidst protest from the Sudanese government and militias believed to be loyal to it. The Nigerian troops had to fight their way against the Sudanese- backed Janjaweed militia to deploy in the troubled Western region. The AU currently has 7,000 troops in Darfur. angolapress-angop.ao 17 Apr 06
France's top honour for war hero - 64 years on A former army commando has been hailed a hero after receiving France's most prestigious decoration, the Légion d'honneur, 64 years after a historic raid. Arnold Simister, of Kirkcudbright, was a young corporal when he took part in Operation Chariot, a combined naval and commando attack aimed at disabling German defences at St Nazaire, in north-west France. He was one of the 611 soldiers and sailors who took part in the operation, whose main target was the Forme Ecluse Louis Joubert, also known as the "Normandie dock", the only structure on the Atlantic coast capable of accommodating the largest German warships. Fearing that the enemy battleship Tirpitz would be transferred to St Nazaire, the British staged a combined naval and commando operation, relying heavily on surprise. HMS Campbeltown, packed with explosives, was used to ram the outer gate of the dock while commando raiding parties disembarked from the destroyer to attack 24 targets. Mr Simister also holds the Military Medal. news.scotsman.com 13 Apr 06

France Honors Quiet Diplomacy of Rabbi Quiet diplomacy rarely makes headlines, but one example of the art received public recognition this month when France bestowed one of its highest honors on Rabbi Gary Greenebaum. In conferring the National Order of Merit on the Western regional director of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), the French ambassador to the United States praised Greenebaum as “a man of dialogue.” Greenebaum earned the compliment for his below-the-radar efforts over the past five years, at a time when attacks on French Jews and synagogues kept escalating and were met with seeming indifference by the government in Paris. The most infamous recent incident was the kidnapping, torture and murder of 23-year-old Ilan Halimi, who died in February. jewishjournal.com 14 Apr 06

Top honours for Mr Pastry Sacre bleu! He's the creme de la creme in the kitchen - and now the French have given him their top Gallic gong for his pastry-making. Coulsdon masterchef Robert Mey may not be as famous as Gordon Ramsay, but the 72-year-old is just as good, if not better. The pastry specialist is a trail-blazer in cooking circles, being one of a handful of French chefs who have revolutionised British cooking since the 1950s. He arrived in the UK in 1955 at around the same time as the legendary Roux brothers, Michel and Albert, and with them helped turn Britain into a nation of gourmets.
