Saturday, the gym inside Elementary School No.5 hosted the rhythmic gymnastics Scholastic National Championships. The event was organized by the Maramures County Youth & Sports Department, Baia Mare Sports High School, the RGF and the ROC. Officials in attendance included RGF’s Mariana Apostu and ROC delegate Traian Ilies. More than 50 gymnasts from Resita, Bistrita, Oradea, Iasi, Constanta and Baia Mare lined up for the start of the event. The only noteworthy club to miss the event was CSS Timisoara, currently struggling with financial difficulties. Baia Mare was represented by 21 gymnasts in all the categories, IV (up to 10 years old), III (11-12 years old), II (13, 14), First and Senior (over 14). The ROC handed out a sportsmanship award based on the Olympic ideal that “winning means the best will be on top, not that you will win at all cost.” The gymnasts from Oradea won the trophy. The Alina Stoica trophy, named in honor of the retired Baia Mare gymnast, was awarded to gymnast with the best score in the ball final -senior Paula Fechete from Bistrita. Local officials pointed out the numerous talented gymnasts who emerged as potential champions at the event and pleaded with the YSD not to cut funding for school sports clubs. YSD’s decision to cut the scholastic sport budget has met with a wave of disapproval from coaches in all sports, who point out there are fewer children who take up sports to begin with, and reducing the number of clubs would only compound the problem.
