007. Saturday

"What day?"

I rolled my eyes, what was so hard about it? "August 12th..." I began.

"That's a Tuesday," she said, as if I didn't know, "why not a Saturday?"

"Because," I said slowly to make sure she got it, "that was the only day in August that both the church and the club were free."

Betty shook her head. "Who gets married on a Tuesday? I mean, I know its Summer Vacation for us, but what about the people who work?"

"I think they can manage one day off," I pointed out, "people do it for funerals."

Betty shrugged. "Yeah, but you can't really tell someone to put a hold on a funeral. Why can't you just get married on a Saturday in July or September?"

"The church is completely booked up and even if it wasn't I couldn't, they need six months notice."

"When did church become so popular?" Betty looked surprised, I couldn't say I blamed her, I had been too.

"But it's not so bad," I brightened, "the plane tickets were cheaper for a Tuesday night flight."

Betty sighed and stirred her coffee. "I wish I could go to Hawaii."

I smiled, sympathetically. "Sorry, this is for Honeymooner’s only."

Betty smirked at me. "And I'm sure you're devastated about that," she teased taking a sip from her cup.

I shrugged innocently.

"Still, a Tuesday?"

I sighed in annoyance. "Blame it on my parents' I had my heart set on July 12th, but Mother and Dad...” I shook my head, I'll never understand their dislike of George, he's my hero! The way they acted though, you'd think he'd just crawled out of a swamp.

"Well, let's just say they dragged their feet like you wouldn't believe! By the time I finally got them to agree to put down a deposit it was too late for July."

"And I guess everyone wants to get married in August," Betty surmised.

"You said it...plus they have to keep at least a Saturday and Sunday spare for funerals or baptisms."

"I had no idea planning a Wedding was so involved," Betty shook her head, "I thought the hardest part would be finding the right dress!"

"Well, don't count on that not being the hardest part, I'm not walking down the aisle wearing just anything."

Betty laughed and shook a finger at me. "You're not planning on getting something so expensive your folks will flip, are you?"

"Mmmm," I replied, evasively.

I wouldn't, of course, it had been hard enough getting them to pitch in for the ceremony and reception. Luckily, I had saved money myself to make up the difference if I did end up spending more than a hundred dollars.

"Where the Heck is Babs?" Betty suddenly asked, looking out the cafe window and then checking her watch. "Let's get this show on the road."

I too wondered about Babs, she was hardly ever late -

Before I had anymore time to wonder about it a voice called.

"Lorraine! Betty!"

Betty jumped to her feet. "Hey, slow poke, there you are!"

"Sorry," Babs made a show of wiping her brow. "Trying to get away from my boss is an absolute nightmare!"

I got to my feet as well and took her arm. "Well, I'm glad you braved it all for me." I took out my purse. "You missed out on coffee, on me, do you want something to go?"

"Straight black would be nice, thanks," Babs nodded, "something to keep me awake when I get back to the daily grind."

I paid for my and Betty's coffees and ordered Babs's. "I hope you've been keeping up with your fashion magazine reading, Babs. I'm going to need it for the Wedding Dress hunt."

"Even if I hadn't, I'd still have great fashion sense," Babs boasted with a grin and then struck a pose. "It's a gift."

Betty and I burst out laughing.

Once Babs got her coffee we headed out of the cafe towards the Bridal Store and she turned to me.

"Just tell me one thing, though, Lor..."

Oh no...

"Why aren't you having the Wedding on a Saturday?"
