047. Main Street
The teachers at school, the newspapers and all the shopkeepers had been talking about it.
Now though, it was finally happening.
The paving of Main Street.
The fact that Hill Valley still had dirt roads was a bit of an embarrassment, at least as far as William McFly was concerned. He'd never forget the time in the Saloon when a group of city boys had mocked the town for being such a backwater.
Will had wanted to knock them six ways from Sunday, but his father had stopped him.
Soon though he wouldn't have to worry about all that.
"Hey, slow-poke, get a move on!" He yelled, finally catching sight of his brother leaving the elementary school house. "We've got places to go!"
Lawerence looked puzzled. "You don't want to feed the pigs that badly, do you?"
Will rolled his eyes and grabbed his brother's arm. "Of course not, but I do want to see what's happening in town."
"But Mama said –"Lawerence began, but Will was all ready hauling him along.
"They're starting to pave Main Street today! Yep, they're going to start paving it!" Morgan Lester, Will's classmate, who had an unfortunate tendency to repeat himself, provided helpfully.
"We're not allowed to go into town by ourselves," Lawerence protested.
Will ignored him, Mama's rule was silly anyway, it wasn't as if town was a dangerous place, they didn't even have cable cars!
There was quite a crowd milling around when the three arrived and Will stood on tip-toe to get a better look at the scene, spotting a red ribbon stretched across the width of Main Street.
"Looks like the mayor's gonna be here, yep, the mayor," Morgan commented.
Will plunged into the crowd so he could get a better vantage point, dragging Lawerence behind him, while Morgan tried to keep up.
Finally, Will found a spot with an uninterrupted view and came to a stop, it was a great view point, they could see the steamroller ready and waiting!
After a few moments the Mayor arrived on the scene, Mr. Hubert who had been around forever. Will wasn't too sure why, since the man had a terrible habit of making speeches that went on forever.
And today was no exception...
"Come on," he muttered after about ten minutes had passed. "Shake a leg."
Mayor Hubert unfortunately didn't oblige.
Lawerence started shifting his weight from foot to foot, impatiently, and managed to jostle the arm of the person next to him.
"Well, if it ain't the McFly boys."
"Ho, Chester," Will greeted the saloon owner.
Chester raised his eyebrows. "Well I think your Mama would have something to say to that."
"Hello, Mr. Caruthers," Lawerence piped up then, and even doffed his hat.
Will rolled his eyes, his brother was such a pansy.
"Come to see history being made, huh?" Chester asked.
"Yep, if Hubert ever stops flapping his lip," Will grumbled.
"It looks like the steamroller driver's gettin' his introduction, so it shouldn’t be long now."
Will quickly turned back to see and it was true!
The steamroller driver was thankfully a man of few words, and to cheers, Mayor Hubert cut the ribbon and the workmen began.
It would of course be a few weeks until the paving was finished, but Will didn't care, now if he ever had children he could tell them about how he was there and saw it happen.
And that made it all worth it, even Mama giving them nothing but mash potatoes and peas for dinner as punishment.
