070. Density
I hate this...
I don't know what my boss is thinking, who cares what the office looks like? No-one has ever complained - at least not to me.
But if I want to stay gainfully employed...
So here I am in absolute agony, sitting across from the woman who once meant the world to me.
Who am I kidding? She still means the world to me.
I can't let her know this, though, I mean, it's not as if she feels the same way, especially considering...everything.
I don't know why I told her to leave anyway, it was so stupid...of course, I acted even dumber months later.
McFly, you’re an idiot.
I don't know what to do, I watch as she writes, she's going to ask me something any minute now. I want to reply nicely, but I'm sure my mouth is going to run off on its own and I'll say something harsh and cold.
I watch her, her writing is steady...remembering what I've heard, that she's no longer drinking.
I want to believe this, but I can't really...
I squirm in my chair, this is worse than agony, it’s torture...she can’t stay here, I need her to leave, I'll just make up some excuse to my boss –
She looks up at me, I can't even guess at what she's going to say... so much for knowing each other.
"What about the carpeting? What sort of style and colour is your boss looking for? I recommend high-density -"
Density.
I'm flung back in time, almost seven years ago. A complete nerd in a crowded cafe trying to talk to the most beautiful girl in the world...
"I'm your density!"
Yep, definitely dense.
"George...?" Her voice is soft and she's titling her head at me, just like she did all those years ago.
What am I doing here? Asking her to leave? Am I insane?
I practically vault over the desk to grab her hands.
Her pencil clatters to the desk.
"Who cares about carpet," I blurt, "and who cares what's happened before. We screwed up, but I love you."
Lorraine stares at me with wide eyes, I don't blame her, before this I barely looked at her.
"I know you probably don't love me, but I have to say it anyway."
She's still staring at me, she thinks I'm nuts, then again she's probably right.
Dense, dense, dense me!
But suddenly she's leaning forward, her eyes sparkling, a smile spreading across her lovely face and then she's kissing me.
”I mean...your destiny..."
