The Ear, The Eye and The Arm. 5Q, 4P
  • This is a brilliant, and highly readable futuristic adventure, and a fascinating perspective on Zimbabwe and one version of what might happen in 100 years. When the 3 children of the Zimbabwean police chief escape their secure mansion into the dangerous and exciting city streets, they face kidnapping, mythical malice and meet many well crafted characters.
A Girl Named Disaster. 4Q, 4P
  • When Nhamo's village tries to force her to marry an older man, she runs away, and starts a journey across Zimbabwe and Mozambique where she finds herself and discovers more about her roots and the world around her. I couldn't believe this book was set in 1981 - it was more like 1881. Fascinating look at life in Africa.
The House Of The Scorpion. 5Q, 5P
  • An absolute masterpiece. In the future, drugs are legal, and what used to be Mexico is now ruled by El Patron, an eccentric opium lord who rules his family with fear. He has created a clone of himself, but ignored medical ethics and refused to have the clone's brain destroyed. This leaves Matt, the protagonist, alone in the world, even though he has someone closer to him than was ever possible before. Well written, compelling and at times horrifying, this paints yet another fascinating glimpse of a place that could be real.
