Chris Crutcher Books
King of the Mild Frontier. 5Q, 5P
-
This is one of the funniest books I have read this year. Reading about young Chris' adventures was hilarious and warm. Many incidents in his life have found their way into his books - and those comparisons make this book even more fun.
Whale Talk. 5Q, 4P
-
The Tao Jones has been through a lot - he was abandoned by his druggie mother and has endured the rage he had as a toddler. He doesn't like injustice, and it's staring him in the face, when a popular jock starts giving a smaller kid flak for wearing his dead brother's letter jacket, he intervenes. TJ starts a swim team at his school and accepts the kids lowest on the high school food chain for an amazing season to triumph over the prejudice they faced.
Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes. 5Q, 4P
-
What a gripping story! You'll be drawn into the drama of "Moby" and Sarah's lives. Crutcher weaves in fun bits about swimming, perspective into the life of a fat kid, evangelical christianity, abortion and a fast and shocking conclusion.
Athletic Shorts: Short Stories. 4Q, 3P
-
I am not a huge fan of short stories: I don't read them very often. And although I am a fan of Chris Crutcher's work, I haven't read that much of it, and the characters from other books featured in these 30 page installments weren't familiar to me - I enjoyed it anyway. He deftly deals with some weighty topics of today in an honest and engaging way. I was hooked.
