  1. What is the one key idea of this chapter. Pay attention to the title of the chapter!
  2. Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.
  3. One image that captures the chapter for you.
  4. One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal.

Called to take Risks

  1. Chapter Five is entitled "Called to take Risks". It explaines that Jesus took risks when he, instead of teaching to the rich, decided to teach to the poor and the anawim. We, too, must take risks in life if we wish to follow Jesus. Helping the least among us is a risk because we know not how they will react and behave towards us.
  2. I want to remember the meaning of anawim, not just because I think it's a harder word to remember, but because I think it is a great word to use instead of "poor in spirit". The anawim were those who were shunned, outcasts. Jesus came, comforted them, and gave into their needs. This was a key idea in his teachings: that we should help the least among us, and frankly, the anawim are the least among us.

I also wish to remember the "table fellowship" concept and the illusion of a "ritual purity." In Jesus' times, whoever was invited to your table was considered either friend or family. This created a bubble of people who were unliked. Jesus Christ opened up to them and ate dinner with prostitues, tax collectors, and various other disliked professions. This violated the "policy" of ritual purity. These people were dirty humbugs and scoundrels. Because of this, they were considered "unclean", ruining society's view of them.

  3. Why does man discriminate? Why is it human nature to find ways to make others feel down?

I think that the reason why man discriminates is because, although we were made in God's image, He gave us free will, and from there the worse side of human nature got to us. We couldn't resist temptations and the urge to discriminate was overbearing because we needed to pump up our egos. 1
