I'M VERY PROUD TO SAY THAT ALSO EUROPE HIDES SOME GREAT BANDS... I GOT IN TOUCH WITH THE EL GUAPO STUNTEAM GUYS FIRST WHEN A LETTER FROM CAPTAIN CATASTROPHY HIT MY MAILBOX TWO YEARS AGO, AND THEN I WAS HAPPY TO SHARE THE STAGE WITH THEM DURING THE FIRST RAID THE NERDS TOOK OVER BELGIUM AND HOLLAND... RARELY I SAW SUCH AN INTENSE LIVE SET PERFORMED BY A EUROPEAN BAND, AND I SWEAR I NEVER SAW A BAND WITH THEIR OWN STUNTMEN SETTING HIMSELF ON FIRE DURING A SONG!!! THAT MAN WAS CAPTAIN CATASTROPHY, A MAN THAT ALONG WITH HIS BAND GOT MY ASS ROCKED SO HARD THAT NIGHT, AND LATER ON AFTER THE GIG PARTYING, BECOMING GREAT FRIENDS. THIS IS TIME FOR ME TO GIVE 'EM A SLOT HERE IN MY POOR WEBZINE... THESE ARE THE KIND OF GUYS WE NEED OVERHERE!!! BUT LET THE CAPTAIN HIMSELF SPEAK...
GD-
A bit of a Stunteam history for the unaware readers...
EGST played their first show in '97 and ever since that day we've managed
to put up a decent rock show for the people. A couple of years ago, we dropped
that whole mask thing and our GoGo left the band. If you ask me that was a
good change, we attract great audiences now, people with good music brains
instead of those morons expecting some kind of a freakshow or something. There's
still entertainment, but music is number one priority now.
GD- You recently released your second full-lenght "Year of the Panther", that
has a very different sound since your early heydays... what's happened??
Well,it just happened!I Remember the boys going into the studio with the intention
to make one hell of a rocking masterpiece, Ithink it's safe to say they succeeded!
Also all the influences are starting to melt together.
GD- What about Belgium?? I had fun being
there, but how's living up there? Can you play or is it difficult to keep
the band going??
Well, people over here just don't seem to get what we're doing with the band.people
over here can't figure it out, they also don't get our sence of humour, you
know?ofcourse there are a couple of places like The Lintfabriek or La zone
where people appreciate us.For the rest i don't know man,we've been banned
from alot of venues, but fuck em!We don't kiss ass. It's alot about your attitude
over here, about the way you look, give me a break! If i hear those idiots brabbling
crazy storys about how rock and roll their favorit band is i just feel like
i need to throw up. But here in our area it's allright,we've some great bands
we often play and hang out with,Bronco Billy,Ekzeema,Scumluc to name the greatest!
GD- I think Europe is quite ready to
arise from his musical paralisis and finally get its maimed honour back. Do
you feel like you're one of the selected bands to carry on this mission??
Do you have any friends or allies here in the Old Continent? What do you think
of the current european music biz?
Capt:Well, when i meet people who like us i know that we're one of those selected
bands, i think the same goes for you and a handfull of others.Yeah we've made
some great friends all over the place, sick and twisted individuals such as
the nerds, the monsters,Germany, Peter pan speedrock, skeleton army... About
the music biz i'm not sure what you mean, isn't that shit all about whining
homosexuals?
GD- None of you guys is pretty looking,
so why you decided to call yourselves EL GUAPO??
My brother Cedrock and Eric the bass player came up with it. And what do you
mean not goodlooking? Girls leave a snail trail at EGST shows, last week i
slipped and fell because of one,you won't see stuff like that at a Nerds show!
GD- Captain Catastrophy, you don't play
any instrument but it seems like your the very earth of the band... explain
us your essential role.
My essential role is to risk my ass during spectacular fire acts, load in the
van when the boys are drinking and make sure we get banned from shitty clubs,
stuff like that.
GD- About risking, I heard that recently
you have been beaten up very bad from some crusties after a barfight occurred
during one of your shows... what happened?
It was at a local punk show.Man, from the minute i got there i got in an argument
over an antiseen shirt i was wearing, can you believe that?Fucking little
bastards giving me shit about what i'm wearing! So went inside, watched some
miserable bands and noticed a friend getting in a fight with some of those
cocksuckers,so i go and help him and break my left ankle. Then the bar owner
comes up to me telling me it's wrong to beat people and starts to call me
names, the guy gets punched in the mouth and the eye and i leave the bar.Guy
follows me and kicks me on my right leg breaking it.Got stomped on some more
and eventualy was able to take a cab to the hospital at 4 in the morning.Oh
man,fuck it, it could be worse,but it's a great story i think.You wanna hear
something real funny? The bar owner got so drunk that night that he started
crying and took a shit in his bed and his dear ol'mother was there in the
morning to clean it!
GD-
What are the actual main influences for El Guapo's music?
There
are alot of bands that are of great influence i'll try to name as much as
i can,Deep Purple,Lightning Beat-Man,Conquerer Worm, Dwarves, Rory Gallagher,Captain
Beefheart, Zappa, 13th floor elevators, Goblin, Sorcery, Hellstomper, Antiseen,
Montrose, Turbo Negro, AC/DC, Black sabbath,The Dirtys, Oblivians, Guitar
wolf, Uriah Heep, Kiss, Simon Stokes, ZZ Top, Bowy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mc5, Grand
Funk...i could go on and on, bands with good music brains!
GD- And what about movies?I know you're
a pornhead, please list your fave pornstars here...
I don't watch
those filthy movies! As far as movies are concerned, horror and vigilante movies,
anything where Savini is involved, but to name you some of my favorite porn
stars, Amber Lynn,Sharon Mitchell, Jade Hsu, Jill Kelly, Little Oral Annie,
Cicciolina, Cummisha, Hyapatia Lee, Seka and Traci Lords. I'm a great fan
of those videos from seventies from Holland, great stuff!
GD-
Ok let's keep this about porn, and what about your future plans as a band?
Any new records coming out, or maybe shows or a tour?
You know, I think they don't make many great porno movies these days. There
are definitely some exceptions like the sSodomania series and the ones from
the seventies wich i mentioned before. I go for old ones, 70's and 80's shit. The
future plans about El Guapo, We have the Bite It! festival coming up the last
weekend of september with devil in Miss Jones, The Berserkers and the Columbian
Neckties. This goes together with a new song released for a Sounds of Subterrania!
compilation 10". In Oktober we'll be on the road for a couple of weeks as
support for The Monsters, great man, 19 days in Germany with those guys! And
for march '03 we'll be opening a couple of nights for the almighty Cocknoose!
There should be a new full length out by then also.
GD-
Now, I know you Captain also had the duty to sing with a band called Bloody
Chainsaw, but you broke up... would you like to spend some words here to make
'em go down in r'n'r history as well as El Guapo?
capt:Oh shit man,Bloody chainsaw is more of a tribute band we do every now
and then. We got one or two songs of our own and the rest all covers, GG Allin,
Antiseen. In 2 years we played maybe 5 shows that contained lotsa blood, a
bass player in jail, girls fainting and people crying. We had great fun! And
as far as El guapo stuntteam is concerned, why shouldn't we be part of rock
n roll history? Bigger then Elvis!!
GD-
Being myself Italian, I have to ask you what is your fave Italian horror movie
and director...
Favorites, Hell of the living dead, Zombie,The beyond, just about everything
by Argento, Fulci a couple of films by Deodato. I really liked to see Sleepless
by Argento, just saw it and liked it very much. I also realy enjoy those Bud
Spencer and Terrence Hill movies.
GD-
What do you think about scandinavian cock-rock?
capt:I'm realy not into that stuff.Besides Turbo Negro i can't think of one
great band in that whole cock rock situation
GD-
Ok fuck that weak shit... I heard now you have 3 guitar players like Iron
Maiden, don't you think this kind of live appealing and your new music style
could prevent a lot of the usual punk rock supporter types to love El Guapo??
I know from experience Belgium is very picky about what's not "usual" punk
rock shit...
oh, i can tell you that El Guapo has some die hard fans who are punkrockers,
but punkrockers who look a bit further that the 89th version of the Queers
or something, you know. Like i said before, people especialy in Belgium don't
know for sure what to think when a band comes out with something exciting
and new. Over the last 2 years or so we've heard alot of people saying stuff
like 'oh el guapo is a hard rock band', yeah so? We do what ever we feel like,if
we wake up tomorrow and we find it a good idea to add 5 more guitar players
to the band and a couple of bass players,we probably will! But don't count
on it tough! If people like it,cool! If they don't,well...fuck em!
GD-
That's all Captain, leave us with some words of wisdom spoken directly from
the kind earth of #1 Euro rock'n'roll stuntman!!!
yeah people,
don't take shit so seriously all the time! Make sure you find yourself a good
woman! Support your local Stuntmen and backyard wrestlers! And stay away from
The Nerds! They're evil fellows! EVIL i tell you!!
