Interview by Arianna Motherfucker
What
have been the events in your childhood/adolescence that led you towards this
kind of extreme art?
I decided to draw this kind of comix when I discovered the Industrial music
scene at the begining of 80´s. I found very interesting the things in
which that music was inspired: technology, madness, hardcore porno, psychopaths,
ultraviolence, psyschosex, etc... these themes hadn´t been treated in
comix then.
How
has been your childhood?
Happy. thank you!
How are the relationships with your fellow artist and writers
in Spain?
I supose you mean cartoonists. I haven´t met many
of them personally. But I´ve got good friends among them although I
am not very involved inthe comics scene. It seems the things I´m interested
in are not the same things that interest in the comic world.
Have
you ever thought about directing a short or a feature movie?
-I wrote the adaptation of my comic Snuff2000 for the short-film. film direction
is not my priority but writing. Anyway I´d like to direct a film some
day in future. It´s too soon to say.
Have
you got troubles getting your art exposed in Spain and abroad?
Yes I´ve got some difficulties to publish them outside even in underground
circuits. Anglosaxon people is very puritan and bigot.
Do
you think you have committed mistakes in your career? I mean, how do you feel
about having fought against the good morals of your colleagues and society's
values?
No. I think I did what I had to do, that is to say drawing and
writing what I like. I know there are some things people don´t want
to see neither hear. Casually these things are which I want to say and show.
Are you going to exhibit something in Italy?
I have done many exhibitions and speaches. Now my exhibition "The Future
glows in the Dark" is making a little tour by the norht of Italy
Speaking
of music, have been bands or musical genres that inspired your work?
As I told you before, when I discovered the industrial music scene in the
80´s, that deed changed my views about my artwork.
Have your parents always been supportive at your choices?
Yes. My parents are conservative -they go to Mass and vote right
wing- but very respectful. Obviously They would rather prefer me to draw another
kind of things -ha,ha!- but they never tried to change my mind.
How have you started drawing and how did you get to this extreme
and nihilistic style?
I think the most important thing for anyone who make an artistic product is
the original personality. I tried to get a personal drawing style and this
means shape and contents. Personally I´m very intereste in everything,
the social chabges and evolution specially. I love writers as Burroughs, Ballard,
Alvin Toffler, Marvin Harris, Cioran, Dawkins, Howard Bloom... They are a
big influence too.
In
"Psychopathia Sexualis" you get inspiration from serial killer's
real deeds, what does interest you in these devious characters?
They all show a lack of guilt and no social moral. I´m interested in
that kind of battle of the group against the individual.
The
story "Right To Kill" developes as it was a comic-track for a WHITEHOUSE
song. What are the relations with this band? What do you think of Industrial
music?
Almost all stories in Pychopathia Sexualis are inspired in Whitehouse tracks.
It´s one of my favourite bands. William Bennet has been a good friend
of mine for many years now.
Always
talking about WHITEHOUSE, what do you think about Peter Soto's literature?
I like it. I haven´t met him personally. But through William he agreed
kindly to write a great prologue for the english edition of Psychopathia Sexualis.
William Bennet made the translation into english. He speaks spanish perfectly...
How
are you considered in Spain?
Fine. I ´ve got many readers and fans here. I have been invited
to many Comic Events and film festivals. My work is very popular here. I have
been drawing record sleeves for Subterfuge, the most important spanish indie
label. That made my artwork popular out of the comics' scene.
The
children as victims seem to be one of the main key-points in your works. What
relation there is between childhood and human mind's corruption in your opinion?
I don´t really know. I draw comix to make questions but I
don´t really have answers. Even I am not sure that answers are necessary.
I don´t take for granted anything, the christian values specially. The
christianity has been -is- the worst vice of human race.
Are
you working on something new lately?
Yes. I´m working in Brian nº9 and in a script for a film project
I will start to show some producers next months. Also the latin channell LOCOMOTION
is working in an adaptation of "the Space Between" for flash animation.
