THE BAD VIBES
COME FROM PHILADELPHIA AND HAVE A CD OUT NOW ON STEEL CAGE RECORDS, A BLISTERING
PUNK ROCK ATTACK THAT WILL LET YOU DEAD ON THE FLOOR IN ABOUT 15 MINUTES OF
TOTAL LENGHT. MY QUESTIONS WERE KINDLY ANSWERED BY GAVIN, SINGER FOR THE BAND,
AND NOW HERE WE GO WITH THIS INTERVIEW AS FAST AS THEY GO ON THEIR RECORD,
1..2..3..4. FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELTS!!!
GD-
A brief band history for the unaware readers..
we have been playing
for a little over 2 years now. the line up is jesse cole on guitar, mark doyle
on bass, and pat dirkin on drums. pat is our 3rd drummer and the best so far.
he played with limecell for many years. he has fit right in with us and it
feels like he has been playing with us for years. we had 2 drummers before
pat who didnt work out. mark, jesse and me are all original members.
GD- Your music is very
fast and take no prisoners, what are your main influences?
A a lot of early 80's hardcore/punk like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Negative
Approach, stuff like that. we loved that shit growing up and never got out
of it. i think so many bands are trying to be something that they are not.
we just try to be a band that we would like to go see play. we know what we
are and dont try to be anything else.
GD-
You come from Philadelphia, named Hostile City USA, can you tell me something
about this? Is it really so dangerous as it seems to be?
well, i guess there is an element of danger to it, as there is with any major
city in the u.s. it seems to be better now then it was years ago, but there
are still many neighborhoods that i would not go into.
GD-
What do you think about the Confederacy of Scum? Have you got relations with
it?
im a big fan of the c.o.s. i think that they are some of the only real punk
rock bands left on the planet, at least punk rock the way i like it played.
besides being friends with some of the people involved and playing some shows
with some of the bands, we dont have a relationship with them. we are just
fans really.
GD- Since you told me you
grew up listening to some of the best american hardcore, what do you think
of its modern evolution?
honestly, I know very little about bands that claim to be "hardcore" now.
I am aware of some of these bands because I work in a punk rock type record
store, but I know next to nothing else about them. any that i have heard sounds
like bad metal to me and i dont like metal, except for w.a.s.p.
GD- Are you into movies?
If so, what are your faves?
yeah, i like movies. i'm a big mafia movie fan. i liked snatch alot. glen
gary glen ross is one of my favorites. i dont know, im blanking out right
now.
GD- How did you hooked
up with Steel Cage and got the album released? Are you guys pleased with it?
I i've known larry and leslie for a few years now. we had a few mutual friends.
they saw us play a little over a year ago and apparently they liked us and
decided that they wanted to put out a cd. weird thing is, we kinda blew the
night they saw us, but what do i know...... we are more than pleased with
the way the cd came out and with everything larry and leslie have done for
us. they are good people and youzz should buy some of their stuff.
GD-
Some friends of mine was ranting about the BAD VIBES and wanted you guys to
play Europe, do you think this can happen anyday?
Probably not. Europe is too far from my satellite t.v. although i do have
relatives in italy so you never know. i like pasta quite a bit so.....
GD- Tell us something funny
or strange happened during one of your sets....
nothing too out of the ordinary i guess. some fights here and there, mark
threw his bass through the front window of a club once. we had a heckler who
was pretty funny. it was even funnier when jesse kicked his ass. we played
with that fucking bad joke of a band called earth crisis . i would say that
was funny, but we left before they played. we had a fight during a ramones
tribute night and were told by a number of people that we "ruined" the night
by doing that. and that "joey wouldnt have liked that" i laughed out loud
at that....really i did....
GD-
I read your liners for the last Rancid Vat CD regarding their Philly chapter,
what about their recent Texan relocation? Is the Philly punk rock scene feeling
their loss?
Honestly, there isn't much of a punk rock scene here in philly.besides Limecell
and the Woodsmen, there isn't many bands worth a shit here either. That's
the main reason we started this band, because all the "punk rock" bands in
the philly area BLOW. We wanted to play in a band that we would go out of
our way to see. Rancid Vat wasn't allowed to play in any of the clubs here
by the time Phil and Marla moved. Philadelphia never appreciated Rancid Vat
in my opinion. Iwas sorry to see the Irwins move from a friend point of view,
but as far as Rancid Vat goes, they weren't allowed to do shit here anyway,
so fuck it. Cosmo is still here and is working on some new shit so........
GD- What about drugs?
Never messed with them. never wanted to and never will. if its your thing,
more power to ya, im just not having it or having any of someone who does.
GD- Your
lyrics seem to deal against a lot of things, what the Bad Vibes attitude towards
enemies and people in general?
well, i guess we arent the happiest band in the world and i suppose our songs
reflect that. i don't think we could write any other way if we tried.
GD- Any new recording plans
or tours in the near future?
We are writing new songs now. We haven't had a whole lot of opportunity to
do so with the drummer situation. but now that pat has joined we are able
to put some ideas we have had for a while together and write some new crap.
GD- Ok, that's
it, if you want to add something here's your opportunity...
Nah, i'm good.
