Other Myths

In addition to Greek and Roman and Native American myths, many other countries and cultures had their own myths about the stars. Most of these myths aren't as widely known as the Greek, Roman, and Native American myths are, but they're important just the same. They affected the lives of the people who created the myths and believed them.

A Hawaiian Myth

The god Maui went fishing. His hook (Scorpius) snagged the bottom of the ocean floor. Maui thought that he had caught a fish and pulled really hard, and pulled up the Hawaiian Islands.

A Chinese Myth

The Chinese believed that if there was an eclipse that a Dragon was eating the sun, and the only way to keep it from eating it was to make a lot of noise. Whenever there was an eclipse, all the people went outside and yelled and screamed and banged things and made a lot of noised and scared the dragon away.
