  • Michelle posted a Holiday Greeting card for all her fans at the Michelle Kwan Forum. See it here on Heather's site!
  • Michelle posted on the Michelle Kwan Forum, run by the amazing Heather Winfield, for the very first time yesterday evening :) Her username is MichelleWKwan, and her identity was confirmed by Heather. Read her message to all her fans! You rock, Michelle!
  • It's here! It's finally here! Michelle's Skate America performance to "The Feeling Begins" is finally available online thanks to MK fans in Asia. It is nothing short of spectacular. Check out my review of it at the group. The 20MB video is available for download at the Michelle Kwan Forum, and I have made a compressed version of 6.5MB available on my AOL server (right-click, save-as on the link).
  • Congratulations to Michelle on her qualification for the Grand Prix final in St. Petersburg, Russia, despite entering only one event (Skate America). She will join Sasha Cohen as the two lone U.S. representatives.
  • Michelle appeared on the Today Show on NBC Wednesday the 13th. She has temporarily stopped taking classes at UCLA in order to concentrate on Nationals :) She was in NYC to help light a spectacular 25-foot, purple Disney Princess
Holiday Tree at Toys "R" Us Times Square. All group members can download a low-quality video of the Today Show appearance in the FILES section here.

  • Michelle will appear with Tony Hawk, Kobe Bryant, and Tiger Woods in LeapFrog and Time for Kids' "Inside Scoop" interactive book. The sports-themed book will have sound effects, interactive games, celebrity interviews, "Did you know?" factoids, trends, puzzles, maps and charts. Look for it soon!

September 2002 - October 2002 News

  • Congrats to Michelle on her *7th* Skate America title! She debuted a new short program to Peter Gabriel's "The Feeling Begins," earning 5.6-5.8 for technical merit and 5.8-5.9 for presentation. She skated to "Aranjuez" for the free skate, and despite doubling the triple loop and falling on the triple lutz, she earned all first place ordinals. Ann-Patrice McDonough was second and Elena Liashenko finished third. For all the marks, see the USFSA site. For photos by Jay Adeff, click here.
  • Michelle will compete at Skate America this season (she had previously opted out of the Grand Prix)! She will replace an injured Sarah Hughes and will go for her seventh win at Skate America starting on Thursday, October 24 with the ladies' short programs. See the USFSA site for more information.
  • Congratulations to Michelle on her win at the 2002 Campbell's International Figure Skating Classic on October 5, 2002! Michelle debuted a new free skate to "Concierto de Aranjuez" by Joaquin Rodrigo. Ann-Patrice McDonough placed 2nd, Sarah Hughes was 3rd, and Sasha Cohen was 4th. For the complete results and marks, see the USFSA site.
  • According to the Los Angeles Times, Michelle's new coach is former World Professional Champion Scott Williams! In Ice Skating Magazine he says:
    • "There was no conversation about any long terms arrangements. For now, we are taking it day by day. It's kind of a trial run. I've always admired her skating. She's a great skater. I'm excited to work with a skater of her level. I admire her work ethic and style. Its always a pleasure to work with someone who has such a great passion for figure skating. I think very highly of Michelle." Williams later added, "I hope she finds what she's looking for, from whoever that may be."
In the L.A. Times article, Michelle says she has worked with Williams the past two weeks but has not made a lasting commitment. She is reportedly working on two new programs with Williams and Peter Oppegard (who choreographed Miraculous Mandarin in 2000). For more information on Scott Williams, see his website.

  • Michelle will compete at the Campbell's International Figure Skating Classic on October 5, 2002. See the USFSA site for the details here.

The Grand Prix includes events such as Skate America and Skate Canada and determines the competitors for the annual Grand Prix Final. See the confirmed list of Grand Prix competitors here. Remember, this does not rule out competition at the National or World Championships for Michelle :)

May 2002 - June 2002 News

The other nominees are Sarah Hughes, Sasha Cohen, Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati, Mia Hamm, Kelly Clark, and Sue Bird. Go and vote, if you are 13-19 years old. March 2002 - April 2002 News

  • Aussie's Girl attended the AAU Sullivan Award Ceremony (which Michelle won) back on April 9. Read about her sweet encounter with Michelle:
    • A friend of mine got invited to the awards ceremony, and he asked me to be his date...how could I say no! The awards went well and we were near the end of the evening. I had lots of pics of Michelle, and was almost out of film when I dropped my camera! It hit the floor and exploded...It was like I was in a dream, I couldn't believe what just happened. I guess when I realized that most of the film was probably ruined, that was when I started crying. Brian (my friend, and my angel) was consoling me in a corner when who walks up to us? Michelle!! She asked what was wrong, and Brian explained about the camera, and that I am such a huge fan of hers. She excused herself and said that she would be right back. She came back with a marker, and asked if she could sign my camera! She said that she didn't have a camera to replace my pictures, and figured that I could still have good memories even from a broken camera! Could anyone be any nicer to a complete stranger? I think not! :) She is truly as nice in person as she seems on tv. You can just tell that she isn't faking it! Ok I promised a short version of the story... so that was about it for the evening, and people were starting to leave so I thanked her for being so nice to me. She laughed and said that autographs are free and that she wasn't the one who had to go buy a new camera :) We said our goodbyes and that was it. When we got home Brian took the camera to his friend to see if any of the pictures could be salvaged, and just yesterday I got the word that all the pics were ruined :(... But i have a broken camera with good memories :)
  • Check out my photos from the 2002 Champions on Ice Olympic Tour!
  • Michelle won the Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Female Athlete! Here is a list of all the winners - voted for by kids! Michelle's award was not presented on the actual telecast, most likely due to her touring with COI. Hopefully, some photos with of her with the orange blimp will be posted somewhere soon!
  • The 2002 Hershey's Kisses Great American Figure Skating Challenge was held on April 16 in New Haven, Connecticut. This was a pro-am competition in a "battle of the sexes" format. Michelle and Sarah Hughes were among the top U.S. skaters who competed. Check out who won and some photos at the USFSA site. The competition will air on Sunday, May 12 from 2-4pm EST on ABC.
  • I attended the Champions on Ice show in Washington D.C. on Friday, April 12. I've posted a review at the club and I took some photos. If they turn out well, I'll post them :)
  • A big congratulations to Michelle for winning the 2001 Sullivan Award, which recognizes the top amateur athlete in the nation! The award ceremony, attended by all 5 finalists, was held at the New York Athletic Club on April 9. Here is a copy of the AAU press release posted on the USFSA's site, and here is an AP article. There is also a photo of Michelle at the awards ceremony from The New York Times site.
  • Michelle attended the premiere for Disney's "The Rookie" on Tuesday, March 26. Also at the premiere were Tim Goebel, Paul Wylie, and several other Olympic athletes. Here is a photo of Michelle with actor B.D. (Bradley) Wong during the after-party at the ESPN Zone in New York.
  • Michelle won the Silver medal at the World Figure Skating Championships in Nagano, Japan. She rebounded from a disappointing short program to skate a beautiful, inspiring performance to "Scheherazade" complete with six triple jumps. Congratulations to Michelle on her SEVENTH consecutive World medal - 4 GOLDS ('96, '98, 2000-1) and 3 SILVERS ('97, '99, 2002)! Way to go, Michelle! Here is a quote from an iskater.com article:
    • "Radiant in red, she flowed in complete harmony to the music of Rimsky-Korsakov, while hitting each and every jump. Her energy and renewed spirit genuinely excited the crowd. She was really on the top of her game tonight and showed a side of her that people know and admire; her grace and poise under pressure. You can never count her out. Her speed was not as great as that of Slutskaya, but her flow and presentation was superb."
  • Michelle was named one of five finalists for the James E. Sullivan Memorial Award (top amateur athlete in the nation). The other finalists are high school runner Alan Webb, swimmer Natalie Coughlin, baseball player Mark Prior, and gymnast Sean Townsend, all chosen from the fourteen original finalists. The winner will be announced on April 9 in New York.
  • Michelle signed a 3-year contract to serve as a celebrity representative and spokesperson for The Walt Disney Company. Disney spokesman Ken Green said in an AP article, "She's an icon ... She's got the charisma, the pizzazz, the enthusiasm and the international appeal we love. We saw her as the ideal celebrity spokesperson for us irrespective of how she would have performed in the Olympics this time." In addition to the TV specials and books Michelle has produced with Disney, she will make radio and TV appearances, host public service announcements and be featured in marketing and promotional campaigns for Disney's parks, hotels, restaurants, retail, motion picture and other divisions.
  • Michelle was on Dateline for a 15-minute interview with Jane Pauley, which was shown Sunday, March 3. Interesting to note, Michelle was the only non-Gold medalist shown and she was the last to be interviewed. It was an emotional interview for her, and if you are a member of our club, check out over 15 screenshots from the interview by lynnpd.
  • Michelle was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday, February 28. Jay is a huge Michelle fan and had nothing but great things to say about Michelle. Michelle said that she *WILL* go to the 2002 World Championships in Nagano (starting March 18) to defend her title. She also kept the possibility of competing in the 2006 Olympics open, but wants to take everything one step at a time.

January 2002 - February 2002 News

  • Michelle won the Bronze medal at the Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games. She led after the short program, but made costly errors in the free skate. Michelle once again handled herself with true class and sportsmanship. She remains a champion in my heart and in the hearts of millions of others. Like Michelle said, six minutes on Olympic ice can't justify an entire career and the process of making it there. I must say, Michelle really makes all the work I put into this web page 110% worthwhile :)
  • There will be a plethora of information on Michelle during the Olympic Games, so instead of trying to keep up, I've put together a collection of links to find the absolute latest news on Michelle. Check it out here. I want to relax and enjoy the Olympics too, you know ;)
  • Michelle is one of fourteen finalists for the James E. Sullivan Award. The award, given to the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States, is based on qualities of leadership, character, sportsmanship and the ideals of amateurism. Read the USFSA's press release here. The other finalists include:
    • Tony Azevedo (waterpolo), Natalie Coughlin (swimming), Matt Lindland (wrestling), Stephen Lopez (taekwondo), Ryan Miller (hockey), Toccara Montgomery (wrestling), Brandon Paulson (wrestling), Mark Prior (baseball), Jason Reed (rowing), Sean Townsend (gymnastics), Allen Webb (track and field), Angela Williams (track and field), and Roy Williams (football).
  • A BIG congratulations to Michelle on winning her 5th consecutive and 6th overall U.S. National Title! Sasha Cohen finished 2nd followed by Sarah Hughes, and both will be joining Michelle at the Olympic Games. A large photo collection of Michelle skating at the 2002 Nationals has been posted at our fan club Michelle Kwan Fanatics under the heading "Photos" in the left frame.

November 2001 - December 2001 News

  • Michelle finished 7th in the polling for the 2001 Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year. She received one first place vote and finished with 17 points, based on the 3-2-1 point system. Here are the results [Athlete, 1st Place Votes, Total Points]:
    • Jennifer Capriati (37) 157, Venus Williams (26) 120, Annika Sorenstam (13) 94, Stacy Dragila (1) 30, Lisa Leslie (0) 23, Ruth Riley (2) 22, Michelle Kwan (1) 17, Se Ri Pak (0) 8, Tiffeny Milbrett (0) 7, Karrie Webb (1) 5, Jackie Stiles (1) 5, Nancy Metcalf (0) 2, and Logan Tom (0) 2
  • Michelle is featured in the January/February 2002 issue of International Figure Skating Magazine. See her photo shoot and read an excerpt of her interview on the magazine's website.
  • Michelle finished a highly controversial 2nd at the Grand Prix Final on Saturday, December 15. Michelle landed 6 triple jumps compared to Irina Slutskaya's 4 triples and skated with more style and polish than anyone else in the field. Most skating fans, analysts, and commentators believe Michelle should have won and that Slutskaya should have placed 3rd behind a clean Sarah Hughes, who landed the only triple/triple combination of the night. Here are the marks and ordinals from free skate #2.
  • Michelle skated her exhibition program to "Fields of Gold" at the Hershey's Kisses Figure Skating Challenge on December 7. Michelle received all perfect scores, except for 2 5.9's in Technical Merit, which vaulted her team, Team Hamill, into 1st place. For an interesting side note, Michelle landed the triple lutz/double loop combination, which may indicate she will increase the difficulty in her short program for the ISU Grand Prix Final next week.
  • Michelle is dropping her East of Eden short program, and will be bringing back her masterpiece short program from 1998 to Rachmaninoff! Read the article here.
  • According to Blades on Ice, Michelle will be hosting a skating clinic for kids from the Children's Miracle Network. Here are the details:
    • "Barbie Doll, Michelle Kwan and 25 Children’s Miracle Network Kids Skate for the Gold to Celebrate the Launch of Star Skater Barbie doll. Michelle Kwan will host an ice-skating clinic for Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) kids from Childrens Hospital Los Angeles to celebrate the launch of Skar Skater Barbie doll on November 19, 2001 at HealthSouth Training Center in El Segundo, CA. After their lesson the kids will be treated to a pizza party, and each child will receive a Star Skater Barbie doll autographed by Ms. Kwan."
  • Read the article Kwan Cuts Through Coaching Speculation from the L.A. Times to get an update on Michelle's training and future short-term plans.
  • Michelle finished 3rd at Skate Canada, behind Sarah Hughes (surprise winner) and Irina Slutskaya. Despite it being her lowest placement at a competition since 1996, Michelle attempted for the first time two triple/triple combinations - triple toe/triple toe and triple lutz/triple loop. Congratulations to Michelle on making this big step forward.
  • Michelle will be competing at Skate Canada this week against Irina Slutskaya and Sarah Hughes. There have been several practice reports of Michelle landing new triple/triple combinations including the triple lutz/triple loop and triple salchow/triple loop. Also, check out this cute photo of Michelle and her dad during a practice session on Wednesday.

September 2001 - October 2001 News

  • Congratulations to Michelle on winning her 6th Skate America title on Saturday, October 27! Check out the USFSA's Skate America site for in-depth coverage, which includes photos and videos.
  • Unbelievable, but true - Michelle split up with her coach of ten years, Frank Carroll, on Friday, October 19, just four months before the Olympics. Michelle was quoted in an iskater.com article stating, "As I've gotten older, I've gotten more independent and I think for myself. That's the way it should be. ... You have your differences in the way you should go about things, and that's what Frank and I ran into." Check out these articles for more details:
  • The USFSA site has updated their biography on Michelle Kwan and has also added a nice new bio photo.

  • According to the Elwood City Downtown Core (EDCD) site, Michelle will be appearing on episode #609 of "Arthur" entitled "The Good Sport" (see May-June 2001). She will be making a "cameo" appearance as the World Figure Skating Champion and graduate of Lakewood Elementary (Arthur's school) and will teach Francine about sportsmanship. Check out a picture of the TV animated Michelle with Francine here. The episode will air Monday, November 19 on your local PBS station's regular Arthur slot.
  • Michelle debuted a new exhibition to "Fields of Gold" sung by Eva Cassidy at the Skating Tribute Show in New York on October 5. Originally organized to honor the legacy of the 1961 U.S. World Figure Skating Team that died in a plane crash, the tribute also honored the victims of the September 11 tragedy. Others at the tribute included Tara Lipinski, Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yamaguchi, Brian Boitano, and junior skater Joanna Glick, whose older brother was killed on United Flight 93, which crashed in Pennsylvania. The tribute will air on Sunday, October 14 from 2-4pm EST on ABC.

July 2001 - August 2001 News

  • Michelle will be chatting on AOL Tuesday, September 4 at 11pm EST! I have made a screen capture you can see here (yes, I know it says Monday... it is an error). Here is the transcript that I have gotten from AOL.
  • Michelle is one of eleven finalists for the Women's Sports Foundation 2001 Sportswoman of the Year Award. The other finalists include bowler Carolyn Dorin Ballard, of the U.S., tennis player Jennifer Capriati, of the U.S., swimmer Inge DeBruijn, of the Netherlands, track and field competitor Stacy Dragila, of the U.S., triathlete Siri Lindley, of the U.S., sailor Ellen MacArthur, of Great Britian, gymnast Andrea Raducan, of Romania, disabled skier Mary Riddell, of the U.S., golfer Annika Sorenstam, of Sweden and Ryoko Tamura of Japan for Judo. Read the article here.
  • A new Los Angeles Times article (dated 8/12) has more information on Michelle's new perspective for this Olympic season. It reveals the short program Michelle will use for the Goodwill Games, and it gives more information on her long program. Scroll down to "Stretch Drive" to read the article.
  • Diehardfan from FSW has added more information on Michelle's programs for next season as of August 9. Go read the thread for yourself here.
    • "There were some concerns regarding Danny's careful eye over Michelle. Have no fear...Danny (Michelle's dad) has been a key player/motivator in Michelle's sucess...it may seem that Danny is at times overbearing, but Michelle is the only person to make all the shots at the end...and Danny recognizes that."
    • "Michelle's costumes are truly spectacular...yet sharp and bold."
    • "Will there be a 2nd SP this season? I can not answer that, but expect a very recognizable SP music piece...one of Michelle's favorite music pieces of her career."
    • "Will she have a 2nd 3/3? Through out the week, her 3toe/3toe combos are landed with ease, with so much flow and attack...perhaps the best of any current eligbile skaters out there. There will be a meeting later tonite regarding Michelle's progress with her jump coach and Frank...then we will know whether Michelle can handle a 2nd 3/3 combo, or that her entry into several jumps make up for the difficulty, including the new footwork, which is truly to die for...even the skating moms are impressed."
    • "Michelle's LP is looking good, with 2 major changes since the initial choreography by Sara. Sara is expected to visit HS again next week or so, before the GW Games. As I have mentioned at the end of last season, expect a different and unique music piece...very MMish, with influence of TM and Salome...she truly dictates the music, not the music dictates her. The only other skater that could pull it off would be Yagudin. I think it's a great strategy to highlight her attack, yet maintain her feminine side."
  • The CNN website has posted a transcript of the August 4/5 episode of "People in the News." You can view it on the website itself here.
  • Michelle will be featured in an upcoming episode of CNN's "People in the News" - a show that profiles the most influential newsmakers from all walks of life. Michelle was supposed to be profiled this week (July 28 and 29), but they will instead show Gary Condit (I know, lol). The website now indicates that Michelle will be shown on these dates:
    • Saturday, August 4 from 11:30am-12pm EST on CNN
    • Sunday, August 5 from 8:30pm-9pm EST on CNN

May 2001 - June 2001 News

  • According to a June 27 press release, Michelle will be appearing in a new "Arthur" episode on PBS:
    • "It's an encore for ARTHUR, the aardvark. CINAR and WGBH Boston are producing 10 new episodes of the four-time Emmy Award winning ARTHUR, bringing the total number of episodes to 95. The new episodes will launch ARTHUR's 6th season on PBS KIDS and one of the episodes will even feature Olympic Medal-winning skater Michelle Kwan. ARTHUR is still a favorite among 2-11 year-olds in the U.S. and ranks among the top ten shows on the CBC in Canada, where it also airs on the SRC and TVOntario. The series, produced for PBS by CINAR and WGBH Boston, is based on the award-winning book series by Marc Brown."
  • I have found some information about Michelle's new long program from Diehardfan at FSW. Go read the thread for yourself here.
    • "...things are progressing pretty well with the new program (BTW, look out for a new set of intricate footwork to very different beats. I know, I can't say much more)."
    • "I can't really comment on any 3/3s that may be included in her new LP, however as I reported during '01 GPF and '01 Worlds, she was working on the 3toe/3toe and 3sal/3loop (although under rotated several times, but the 3toe/3toe were by far the best ever for her. I MAY BE able to report more on it when I do visit her soon. As for now, my source says that Michelle is working more on the choreography than the jumps...although she does allocate certain days to do just the jumps."
    • "I can't comment either on the music. With respect to the Kwan family and Frank, this would only be disclosed at the GWG. All media related people have been asked not to diclose it. I do, however could share that Michelle had the biggest input in the selection process...she really feels good about the chosen music, and would hope that it would give a memorable impression to her fans and the audience...it is very different form Lyra Angelica."
    • "Michelle's hair is still the same length, give or take 1-2 inches. Her costume is yet to be finalized, but do expect flow and extremely fitted costume....again, this is just the beginning...things could change through out the season. We all know how fickle she is when it comes to fashion and skating costumes."
  • Sarah Kawahara will be doing Michelle's choreography for her long program next year! Scroll down to "Get With the Program" to read more about Michelle's decision to work with Sarah.
