A Spirited Journey: Part One *By: Mustangfreedom 44* Thunder echoed across the dark ominous-looking sky. Spirit glanced up and sighed. "Another rainstorm" He thought, somewhat angry. Rain then trotted up beside him. "What's wrong, Honey?" She asked him. He made a motion with his head towards the sky. "Oh." Rain muttered. "What'll we do with the herd? Where exactly can we go to get out of it this time?" She asked Spirit. " Well probably go to the caves next to the waterfall. How are you coming along?" He asked her. She was soon expecting a baby foal. " Fine. Just fine." " Good." Spirit replied. "Let's get going then shall we?" The herd was soon on their way. On the way it started to rain hard. The herd started to run. Earlier, Spirit had told his one year older sister, Sundance to run beside Rain to make sure she stayed with the herd. When they were about halfway there, it started to hail pea-sized hail. It hurt!! Spirit ordered the herd to full speed. One filly, born earlier this morning tried as hard as she could to keep up, but fell behind. Spirit noticed this immediately. He told his mom to take over and he went back to help the filly. At the same fort Spirit was captured in a chestnut mare lay, about to have her colt. A few minuets later, a jet black colt lay next to her. He was licked clean by his mother, named Star. He slowly opened his eyes to survey the land around him. She named him Shadow. His mother then got up off the ground and motioned to him to try and eat something. He tried to stand up and drink, but fell down flat on his butt the first time. The second time he got up and successfully started drinking. The he looked up above one of the walls to their stall to see a huge black head peering down at him! He gasped and hid behind his mother. Then he herd a voice. It was somewhat low, but gentle. " I can see he'll be a brave one." The voice had a tone of sarcasm. He heard a snort from his mother, then the voice again. " Okay, okay. Sorry I made fun of your colt." Shadow then built up enough courage to look around his mother at the stallion again. He had a gentle face. "This" said his mother "is your father. His name is Blaze" Shadow stared up in utter disbelief. This huge beast was his dad!? "Hi." Shadow muttered avoiding all eye contact with the stallion whatsoever. "Whatsa matter, little guy?" The proud stallion gently asked. " Nothing" Shadow quietly replied. Then a bright flash lit the dark stable. He heard a gasp of surprise from his dad, a neigh from his mom and he himself added to the noise by emitting a scream of pure fear and darted between the legs of his mother. Then they heard a loud pattering on the tin roof. Hail. It was the size of grapes. Shadow got as low to the ground as he possibly could. Then a small white ball of ice landed on the ground in front of him. Some of the white icy balls were getting inside! Blaze then broke the boards between him and Star. He then helped her protect young Shadow. Then they all heard a yell from outdoors. Blaze could just barely make out he words. "It's a tornado. Everyone underground now!" Blaze had been through tons of tornadoes before he was brought here from Nebraska. "Holy shit!" he muttered. "Back away from the doors and lay down!" His father yelled over the clattering. All the horses did. Just as he did, the roof from right over their heads was ripped apart piece be piece. Back in homeland, the herd was just reaching the caves when Rain and Sundance heard a noise behind them. The turned around to see what was making the noise when they were distracted by Spirit and the filly. They all got the herd inside. Spirit told the filly to go find her mother. Just then Rain lay down on the ground. It was time. Half an hour later a small paint filly with golden spots stood beside her father. She knew who he was from the moment she saw him. She nuzzled her mother and then her father. Spirit then went to the mouth of the cave. Rain, the filly, Esperanza and Sundance soon joined him. What they saw amazed them all. A big snakelike cloud was on the ground and moving toward them. Back when Spirit was at the fort, he remembered a black horse telling him about these clouds in Nebraska. He said they were called tornadoes and they could range from an F-0 to and F-5. F-5's could be over half a mile wide in diameter and could kill a horse in a matter of seconds with winds of over 300 m.p.h. He suddenly remembered the horse's name. Blaze. The tornado was coming right towards them. And the tornado just so happened to be an F-5.
