Curt, Missy, and Eric Frantz
Diary for Escondido

Friday May 13 -- Escondido, Los Angeles

1. The second and much larger part of the San Diego Zoo is the Wild Animal Park in Escondido, 30 miles north of San Diego. The park consists of 1800 acres of which only 700 have been developed to date. It's spread across hills and valleys similar to biogeographic regions in Asia and Africa. Highlights included:

Eric the adventurer A rather round gorilla

  • Entering the park through an aviary into Nairobi Village
  • The Wgasa Bush Line monorail ride through the Eastern Africa, Asian plains, Northern Africa, Southern Africa, and Asian waterhole regions of the park
  • Walking through the replica of the Congo River fishing village
  • Hiking the 1.7 mile Kilimanjaro Trail
  • Seeing the bird, elephant, and North American animals shows
  • The Gorilla Grotto where Eric clapped along with the gorillas
  • Feeding and petting goats and deer in the petting kraal
  • Feeding the ducks
African plains view from the monorail "Ride 'em adventurer!"

for an adventurer and his mom

We expect we'll pay a return visit to this park someday and when we do, we'll try to take advantage of two opportunites. One is a campout with the animals and the other is a camera safari through the park.

2. We drove back to Los Angeles to an empty apartment. Matt was gone for the night and Tami and Steve had left LA to visit her mom Jeanne in Duke Medical Center in North Carolina. We were "house swapping" since they were staying in our house in Cary while we were in their apartment.
