How can I describe SiN to all of yous? Well, think of a really bloody action movie and take out all the drama and character development and what do we have: that's right, SiN! You get a cookie! This movie is one hour of pure action. Explosion after gunshot after bloody monster explosion. Whoa! This is a guy's movie all the way. Character development and complexity is thrown away in favor of action, violence and explosions. And it's not that bad, in fact, SiN, is pretty cool. The story involves Alexis Sinclaire. A mega beast with an evil English accent, who is determined to baptize the world with her newly created species that is superior to humans in every way. (but are newly evolved humans really that savage and ugly?) Anyways, there is one child who will determine the fate of the world. She possesses the power to destroy the world and Alexis will stop at nothing to get her back. Yeah, that's basically it. Other characters get involved. The blonde haired, bimbo, J.C. gets involved because she is upset with Blade (awful, awful name), as Blade killed her brother who is also called J.C. (can we get any cornier?) as he was affected by one of the monsters that Alexis had created. Blade is a member of HARDCORPS and he is like a super cop made of metal. Ok, let's start with the bad things. First of all, this movie is so clichéd. Blade is a cookie cutter, stereotyped hero. J.C. is your typical try to act tough but really weak blonde bimbo. (think Kagero from Ninja Scroll.) It's so stupid when Blade has to save her from monsters at least twice because she stupidly gets herself trapped or smacked by a monster, even though she is so "tough". I really wanted to see J.C. whip some monster ass on her own. I do like the supporting characters though. Alexis is just so great as a bad woman. She's so Meeeeeeeeeeeeeean, yet she's so sexy, and she wears some seriously skimpy clothes. She would so be fired for wearing what she wears to work, unless she's a stripper. I like the African American officer from Hardcorps, she provides some comic relief with her great attitude. I also like the little girl. I love it when she tells Blade, "Watch out for monsters," even though she is a homicidal monster herself. (I didn't ruin anything, just take a look at the picture on the DVD insert in the movie. It shows her as the little girl and the monster.) I don't know why, but I just love that line, it is just so ironic. Speaking of homicidal monsters, some things just don't make sense in this movie. (just like that sentence!) When the little girl turns into a monster and rips apart two hardcorps cops, it never mentioned in the movie again, ever. I would think that if an 8-year-old child ripped two cops apart, someone would talk about it. Since this movie is only an hour long, character development is thrown out the window. The character interactions seem unwarranted. J.C. and Blade fall in love, but what happened in one hour to make them feel that way about each other? Other character interactions just seem unjustified too. The last fight is a little disappointing. Although I like the outcome I really wanted to see Blade and Alexis really smack each other up or something. She's nasty...she could've whipped out a gun and at least took a few shots at him. How about the good? Well, the plot is cool, Alexis wears skimpy clothing and the action is great. (although it's VERY bloody. Even worse than Ninja Scroll and Akira.) The voice acting is fantastic. I have watched the English Dub and a little of the Japanese sub. I must say that the English dub is the way to go. Alexis sounds so right with her English accent and the 8-year-old girl is voiced by an actual 8-year-old girl. THE HORROR! The animation is nice too. Although it's not as nice as Ghost in the Shell, it reminds of Ghost in the Shell, with the futuristic cityscape and the mixing of animation and CG sequences. Oh, I forgot to mention that this movie is based on an American produced PC game of the same name. This movie seems to be more American than Japanese and I think that's why the English voice acting is so fantastic and that the movie is more action oriented than dramatic. I also noticed then when you put on the English subtitles for the Japanese version, the English subtitles are the English script. I think the English script was made first and then given to Japan to translate to Japanese. I should also mention that video game to anime movie translations are rather weak. For example, Final Fantasy is really bad and Sonic is pretty lame, as is Samurai Showdown and Tekken. I hear the Panzer Dragoon anime isn't that hot either. Had the movie been tied up a little stronger, the character development better (I don't mind clichéd characters, but they need personality and background.), and the movie longer, SiN probably would've been one of my faves. However, this movie is still a fun movie to watch and I recommend at least a rental and a maybe buy for people who hate romance or drama. This is pure action. It's nonstop and it's pretty cool. |
