Let me tell you from the start, that this is a much, much better quality production than that "movie" we call Pokemon: the first movie; however, this movie still can't hold it's own against Pokemon 3 which is much better than this movie. (I guess the Pokemon movies get better as the number gets bigger. Pokemon 4 should be a masterpiece!) If you watch this movie, don't even bother watching the short, it's a waste of time. It involves Pikachu rescuing a whole bunch of eggsecute. It's really lame, and the animation for it is ugly. Well, it's only a little better than the TV Show, but when they showed the tree blowing in the wind, I told myself that I could make a better animation of a tree blowing in the wind in an art class flipbook project. Anyway, the short is very corny and probably the worst short out of all the pokemon movies. Then the main movie comes up: The Power of One. I can tell you that I liked this movie. It's about Ash, Pikachu, Misty and Tracey, in one of their Orange Island adventures. They land on an island that is celebrating a tradition. This weird girl, (I can't remember her name, but she's very irritating) picks Ash to be her boy toy and tells him he must go find three orbs in the ice, fire and thunder shrine, because it's tradition. Well, much to the jealously of Misty and the spineless Ash, he does it but little does he know, or anyone, the true power that the orbs hold. I won't tell. Anyway, we have a very weak bad guy, (I'll discuss that later) who is hell-bent on capturing the three rare birds Moltres, Zapdos and Articuno, to complete his collection. If he captures these three birds, the ultimate rare pokemon, Lugia will be released, as the prophecy says, (The Prophecy always says so.) Anyway, since these birds control the weather in a perfect balance, one being captured, messes up the weather severely and we have craziness and Ash and Pikachu must save the day. Whew, ::takes deep breath::, a little complicated for little kids huh? Well, let's start with the bad. First, the bad guy is really weak. He really isn't even in the movie that much, he doesn't get angry when Ash and his friends do things that aren't in his favor and he let's them escape. Plus, he's not even that mean. Hmmmm, it irritated me, that he just wasn't a very good bad guy. Second, there are quite a few plot holes. Why do the birds try to blast each other away? I can assume things but why doesn't the movie tell me? When does Ash collect the second orb? They never show him getting it. He just has it… Last, the battles are very weak. As I said, I don't like to see Pokemon just blowing each other away for no reason. I think trainer controlled battles are MUCH more exciting. This has about 1 trainer controlled battle. (I can't remember it though.) Pokemon 3..... now that has some exciting battles. (check out the review and see what I mean.) On the upside, the story is great (cept for the plot holes.) and the animation is a little nicer than the TV. show. (but still light years away from Ghost in the Shell.) The feel of this movie is much lighter than Pokemon 1 and it is just more exciting to watch. It was a little predictable, but not as predictable as the first movie. The whole feel of the movie just feels like a Pokemon movie. Although, it's still a weak movie, it's at least worth a rental. If you need to buy a Pokemon movie, and can only buy one, Pokemon 3 is still the way to go. |
