I didn't know what to expect from this movie. I really wanted to see it in the theaters, but no one would go with me, since none of my friends like Digimon. :( So I was looking in the movie section and saw the Digimon movie on sale. I picked it up because I like Digimon, I thought the cover was pretty and I had some extra money. I wasn't really expecting that much from this movie, as I haven't heard much about it, and what I have heard hasn't been very nice. Plus, the movie was out in theaters for like three weeks, but damn, was I surprised by this movie, in a very very good way. The first thing I noticed in this movie was the style of animation. It's not as bright, detailed or as Americanized as the T.V. show. The movie's animation resembles Japanese animation from a while back, around 10 or 20 years ago. If you have seen Venus Wars or any older titles like that, you know what I mean. You may love the animation, hate it or just not care. (The target audience probably won't even notice.) I think the animation is excellent and adds style and darkness, which is more appropriate to this film. It adds atmosphere. The story is the only weak part of the movie. The story isn't bad, but it consists of three segments. They were 3 half hour mini movies in Japan. I don't want to give anything away, but the connections that link the three mini stories are rather weak and the movie seems like it was composed of short stories instead of one, long story. The first story consists of little Kari and Tai and their first experience with a Digimon. While it's cute, this part of the movie doesn't seem totally necessary. The second segment, and my favorite segment, is about an evil digimon virus that has taken over the Internet and is messing up computers all over the world. It's up to the first Digidestined, the kids from the first season of the show, to stop the evil digimon and stop a missile that the digimon virus has launched toward Tokyo. This part of the movie is exciting and very stylized. If you watch it you will see what I mean. I really wish that this part of the story was the whole movie, as this segment could have been extended and made into a great Digimon movie. The second Digimon movie could consist of the kids from the second season in a different story. Anyway, the third segment takes place 4 years later and involves the second group of dig destined. (Kids from the second season.) These kids meet a boy named Willis in America who is being terrorized by a huge and mean Digimon who keeps telling him to "go back." This part of the movie is a bit corny and sappy, but it is a kid's movie. I do like the story, I just wish the links between the segments held the movie together better. The soundtrack is great and has a whole bunch of cool tunes. The main song by LEN called kids in America is very appropriate and catchy. The rap remix of the Digimon theme is great too. The voice acting is excellent. It's the same voices as the T.V. voices, so there are no complaints. What I like is that, the voices sound just right for these characters. The action scenes are great if not a bit much. The large-scale destruction with tons of fireballs, punches and explosions can be a little much for the eyes. But the action scenes are great anyway. The messages about friendship and helping others are subtle and are nice for little kids. The jokes are also funny, if not a bit corny. By the Way, you need to watch a few Digimon episodes to understand this movie; non-fans of Digimon would be lost. This movie is rated PG because the action is intense and quite violent, even for digimon. There are also a few sight gags. All in all, this is a good movie that has a few flaws. Buy it if you are a fan of Digimon and rent it if you like Digimon a little bit. |
