On the east side of the square in Franklin stands a building that was Shugart and Hunt Drug Store when my mother was growing up. It now houses the Gallery On the Square. About 1991, Nancy Stone realized the community of local artists were largely anonymous, so she did something about it. After talking to several people who were artists, she lauched a group that sought others who were interested in art. In 1992, my son was taking art at Franklin-Simpson High School. When his teacher, Carolyn Lanham, contacted me and said, "Paul tells me you're an artist," it was only the beginning of my involvement with this group. We all loved art. Mostly, we were practicing artisians, although few of us made a living from our artwork alone. We became the Simpson County Guild of Artists and Craftsmen, called the art guild for short. We had several members, among them Dave Trusty, Carolyn Lanham, Helen Crocker, Mary Frankenfield (Neal), R. L. and Jan Head, George Reynolds, and me. As time passed, we acquired other members, like photographers Amy Biggs and Frances Perdue. |
