San Francisco was out of power today. I was just glad I wasn't one of the people on BART when it went out... I'm only mildly claustrophobic, but that might just push me over the edge!
Our Governor-elect is taking his pay raise, and says the state is too bad a shape to give raises to the state workers! What he said when he was running was "To increase the salaries of elected officials while too many schools are failing sends a terrible message to our kids about the priorities of government." He's taking 95% of the raise, so he's "legally accurate," I guess. (He regards this as a 5% cut. Apparently he's had lessons from the master, King William.) This could be a Very Long 4 Years. I wonder what the state workers are thinking now, and he doesn't even become Governor till next month.
I spent a lot of the day glued to the radio listening to the President's defense. The
Bee this morning had 8 pro-impeachment letters. Only the editors are still against it.
The main editorial suggests that maybe he
should have been less worried about post-Presidential indictment and more about impeachment.
More to my surprise, the New York Times is quite negative about Their Boy Bill.
And they really excoriate Reno. They say the sooner she's sent packing back to Florida the better.
I forgot to mention the other thing we bought yesterday, which was a couple of lighting magnifying glasses for our SoleMates Kris Kringles.
It's been a year since Bob Guza took over writing General Hospital. While he's miles better than the hack who had the head-writing job before, he's ruined one of the longest- standing characters, destroyed one family, and seems to favor the "quick-fix" (a two-year pill addiction cured in a day?) Shadow War approach. (The end of the Shadow War was why I stopped watching B5. He's replaced one player for no good reason, and while the new one is a good actor, the old one could have done it. Guza has taken one promising character and shoved him into an uncomfortable niche. He killed off one unpopular character but then BROUGHT HER BACK! Ick! We used to say we believed in Storytelling With ATtention to Character and History, SWATCH, and while Guza is a lot better than the former writer he's still not entirely with the "character" part of that. I tape the soap, but I get around to watching it when I get around to it, unlike last year, when I would be glued to the set.
Lunch with Wowbagger today, and we went to a different place, the one on the Slough. The green heron did finally fly up. Another view was a really fluffy-tailed gray squirrel who had a huge seedpod to stash somewhere in a tree. When I got home, I walked off the fried-banana and coconut ice cream (and translucent palm seeds (eyeballs?)) in a 2.5 mile walk with a happy dog.
I took down the summer stuff from the plastic window and started putting up the Christmas cards. What I really feel like doing this year is strange for me: baking! I haven't done cookies for years, and the girls took over decorating them early on. I have some calorific things I am dying to try (let's hope not literally.)
