November 20: Hanging Out (Posted December 3)

Friday we got up about 8 local time, and I called my mother-in-law. She said she was off to have her hair done and not to come till 10, so we went off for a leisurely breakfast and explored the area for awhile. We got a little lost for our first try to the house, but found it quickly enough, then came back to the motel. Then Rich was really getting antsy and couldn't sit still to wait past 10 ("Rich, she can't get her hair done in an HOUR!") and we went over to the house and sat in the driveway and waited. And waited. We went off to a convenience store and got their last New York Times and read it while we waited. I suggested we get out, since it wasn't raining, and walk around the block, so we did, and yes, that brought my brother-in-law Ed driving his Mom.

Rich wore the Polish shirt Roni had given him. "The person wearing this shirt is Polish. May be susceptible to kielbasa, pierogies, polkas and bowling."

Ed told us about some family papers in the basement (which he teased us with, then never located. We suggested they get properly copied next time he finds them, since the family geneologist would love the information.) They include Rich's grandmother's birth certificate in Austria-Hungary (no Poland in those days) in 1875. There's also grandpa Martin's immigration papers, and it seems he was using a false name, Wagner, perhaps on the lam.

This is the grandchildren wall. Vince (center right) is the only one of my five who is completely out of date. There are a couple of others like the baby on the bottom, now 14, who need updating as well. Mom kept getting confused as to who was whom. Fortunately, we met all but two of them, so now I know them.

Sydney the dog stayed out from underfoot at first. Later he got to know us better (the big people who won't give him snacks or feed him from the table, but who do take dogs on walks.) One day I leaned over to say something to Carol and Sydney got really upset. I guess he thought I was attacking.

The main activity was to go out to dinner at Red Lobster last night. Ed, Mom, and we drove over and met Carol, since this is close to her work. (She's an insurance adjuster.) Frank, the other brother who lives there, was having his hair cut so had to miss it. I had a "lobsterita" which netted me this "glamourous" shiny red bead necklace with lobster charm. It looks like the Christmas ornament from Pittsburgh!

When we got back to the house, Frank had arrived. He and Carol take the dog Sydney to the nursing home to see Uncle Julian every Friday. Rich and I came along. Julian is the last of that generation of Yarnots. He wasn't too sure who Rich was, but he attempted to be companionable. Sydney and Frank roamed the halls looking for people to visit. He, the dog that is, is a great hit with the residents. (Frank bribes him with snacks and he stays close to the patients.) Unlike the nursing homes I'm familiar with in California, this one has three stories. (Ours are one-story for earthquakes.) Then back to the house for more talk and visiting till we gave up and came "home." Downtown was "light-up night" which really looks like it was beautiful. Pittsburgh is justly proud of its clean skyline and gorgeous lights nowadays.
