November 16: The Puppet Book

Well, since the scanner is in the back room with Rich's computer, I saw my Puppet Book that I mentioned last week, and thought I would scan in the first page, the one with the nice comment.

Oops. I thought I'd added the text on the upper cartoon: "Just put the lid on, Simpkins!"

The picture is me with a burger-box "junk puppet" with seedpod eyes. It's unfortunate that Mickey D and BK no longer use these. Besides cartoons, I include other puppets (like a dishmop with eyes and red nose, and a catalog cutout, and my Groundhog Day two-sided puppet), plans for stages, plays, plans for different puppets, and at the end, just for fun, a section on Bunraku. (Hardly suitable to teach Kindergarten, but still interesting.) It was a fun book to do.

Happy birthday to Sesame Street! 30 years ago, we were en route to England, so we didn't see it for four years, but I love Cookie Monster and Grover and Bert-n-Ernie and of course Kermit and Oscar the Grouch, and Big Bird. And may Mr. Hooper rest in peace. When we got home, the kids learned to love Sesame Street, and so did I.
One of the things I saw in Richard's class was a tape from a puppet convention, with Kermit as the Guest of Honor. ("There's something under there!" "Quiet! It's your puppeteer!") Jim Henson was my hero, and I think it stinks that he went and died before I could meet him.
