August 8: Garbage Cans

Fair Maiden and Software Pirate
(Authentic medieval aluminum ladder, too!)

Rats! I meant to go walking this morning, but slept in till 8:30. Doubtless, as the songs run around in my head, that was because of seeing Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Music Circus last night. Rich had never seen it before, and came out of the tent saying "YES! THAT is the kind of musical we go to see!" In fact, when we got home he got out the CD of the music and played that. The last time I saw Joseph was in Davis with Bernadette, and loved it then, as well. This Music Circus production has been sold out all week, and B. says that when they put it on at Gonzaga the spring of '97 it was also a full house every night.

Bernadette is at the Davis gala for subscribers tonight. I would have enjoyed this, but it's her turn. And it's not exactly like I'm paying for the tickets, anyway. Once they had left the house, I took Sailor for a 2.1 mile crepuscular (thank you, Ceej!) walk.

Along the way some of my neighbors were talking about their garbage cans. I gotta say, this neighborhood is a whirlwind of excitement! The county is changing our garbage pickup: before this there's been a 90-gallon can for garbage and green stuff, and three recycling bins for glass, plastic and cans, and paper. They're changing so the 90-gallon is for greenery, there's one can for unsorted recyclables, and there's a new garbage can. The green and recyclables are picked up on alternate weeks, garbage every week.
The default garbage can size is 60 gallons. For less money, you can request a 38-gallon can, and for more, a 90-gallon one. We've always, even before recycling, been pretty careful with our garbage. Besides, we have a compost pit and a rabbit. Back 15 years ago, we had 8 people and put out two aluminum garbage cans every week, and our neighbors, with 4 in the family, had 4 cans and they were always chock-a-block full. Therefore, with just the two of us, we figured we only need a 38-gallon can.
Thursday, the truck came around with the new cans, and skipped us! When they hadn't come back, Rich called to ask what was up, and the lady said we would get it on Friday. Now, remember, Bernadette cooked chicken. Sailor doesn't usually mess in the trash cans, but chicken is too tempting. No can, so we stuck the packaging and the cooked-on foil into the fridge. They didn't bring us a can on Friday, either. Hence, when the neighbors were talking about cans, I had to butt into the conversation and ask if they had their cans. Yes, the 38-gallon lady had hers. They said they'd seen some being delivered today. I guess it's another phone call on Monday!

My other discovery on this walk was that one of the barricades down the street where they've been putting down pipe is "Property of the City of Los Angeles." Perhaps, like birds, they migrate?

Earlier today I had a bit of an accident. I was out deadheading the roses. I'd missed and cut off a nice, aromatic, red rose, so I was holding it to bring in for a vase. As I stepped out to cut a dead bloom, my sandal slipped on the sloping curb, and I sat down hard, hurting my left wrist, demolishing the rose, and (this was the frustrating part) getting my hair caught in the rosebush. I couldn't move till I got untangled. Good thing no one was around with a videocam, as I think it was probably a "funniest home" candidate!

So, my weight is the same. I walked 6.8 miles. (Argh.) Four magazines out. One (only one!) update written (I'm still a month behind!) No words, no math, no history. Rich retired, I stopped doing anything! Next week will be better, I swear.
