Ten years ago death squads in El Salvador killed some Jesuit priests, their housekeeper, and her young daughter. These men were trained by the School of the Americas. There are people who think it's not the job of the U.S. to train terrorists. Today there was a protest march but I couldn't go because I had to meet my CASA supervisor for my 60-day conference.
Here is another page, this about the "Truth commission". Then there are books about the martyrs: Companions of Jesus: The Jesuit Martyrs in El Salvador, The Same Fate as the Poor, and Ita Ford, Missionary Martyr.
My meeting went well.
The main headline in yesterday's Bee was about the mayor's race: "Race almost a non-issue so far in mayoral contest." (Till they decide to make it one, I guess.) This reminds me of nothing so much as Jesse Jackson out grabbing headlines in Decatur. What does this man DO besides stand in front of microphones? You can tell he thinks he's a Martin Luther King, but he has no lunch counters or Selma marches, so he tries to create them. The Daily Rant agrees with me.
But back to our non-racial (so far) mayor's race... Mayor Serna didn't want to die too soon to force a special election. In the event, he died on Nov. 7, exactly a year before the election. If he could have just held on one more day, or even till past 8 when the polls will close, there would have been no question. (He had cancer, I don't really wish he'd lasted longer, considering the pain.) Heck, he died early in the morning before polls even open. So they had to make the decision whether this was "within a year" so there wouldn't need to be a special election. Following the mayor's wishes, and the least-expensive solution, the City Council decided this was indeed "within a year." It's my favored solution, but I think they stretched it a bit.
What is this with Yolo County Jail? They had a trustee on laundry duty walk off, probably to get married in Reno. The place is sorta Swiss cheese.
Rich has been printing up my pages again, and while he didn't take enough notes, he did point out that I didn't have September 21 up, but two of the day before. I also didn't have the 22nd listed on the September page at all. I have no idea what I was thinking that week!
I wrapped up in a blanket, and apparently the dog didn't know it was me under there and bit me. He didn't break the skin, but he certainly hurt. Between that and a couple of sets of accidental cat-scratches (I got in the way of a cat, Rich, and the feather toy for one, and Crombie thought I was a tree and went to climb my back for the other), I'm a wreck.
