August 29: 'Menic

On Friday, Rich's appointment was initially at 6. If one considers that the whole thing took nearly 3 hours, what with tests and lab work, it's good they changed it to 2:45. (Except that he really should have gone in a couple of days before, but that's 20-20 hindsight.) There's still no good idea what's wrong, but he is anemic so they gave him iron supplements and Zantac. He'll be having a "periscope" exam as soon as they can schedule one. The scary thing is how much weight he's suddenly losing. He is visibly thinner in his face and neck than he was just two weeks ago. Meanwhile, though, he's eating well. He's tired and sleeps just about any time he sits down.

Being anemic is MY schtick, as I said before. Furthermore, he's much more apt to have red meat than I, though we've both cut down a lot lately.

A Chorus Line was the last Music Circus show of the season. I'm sure I must have seen it in '88, the last time it was here, but it's kind of vague. Anyway, they did a terrific job. I'll miss the tent shows till next summer.

Yesterday was mostly spent watching the beasts interact. There was a lot of hissing between the cats, but no actual bloodshed. A couple of times they appeared to be chasing each other just for fun, too. They did eat side by side, once. Fitch walked past a sleeping Crombie to get to the food, another time, and right back through the box where she was when he went back. He loves the Kit Mahal, too. (Rich is thrilled about this.) He gets up and swipes at the dog from the platform above the box, and balances on his back feet to reach down after Crombie in the porthole.

Monica had brought a feather toy which she said Fitch loved. I know for sure RICH loves it. He waves the wand really fast, and Crombie starts to jerk. She looks like she's in a strobe light. Fitch watches with his pink little mouth wide open. Rich has broken the wand twice, by stressing it so hard, but I can't tell him to stop, he loves it so. Monica also brought a tiny platypus with Fitch, and Crombie tried to run off with it once. Fitch, meanwhile, discovered a plastic bag and rattled off with it under the couch. Later, when I saw exploded dog all over the living room, I realized it was the one I've been putting his combings into.

I somehow entirely forgot a month when I figured the first cats' ages, so actually Crombie is only 2-3 weeks older than Fitch. This Fitch is about the age of Fitch the First when he died. It's going to take awhile, but I have hopes these two will get along soon. Right now, the wrong two beasts are ganging up, both older ones on the baby. It's when the cats take on the dog that all will be the way it should be.

The day started with a quick training in our volunteer duties next week at Heritage Days. We also found out that the Gold Fever exhibit is not doing anywhere near as well as they'd hoped. Everyone else agrees the volunteers there are not treated at all well.
We came back past a wedding at the Capitol. I burst into tears instantly, go figure. (I owe those to Roni, actually.) Then we went to the library booksale at a local library. Inside, they were having an Internet class, learning to use "find." Later, I went to my own library and found a copy of Girl From Yamhill, which is Beverly Cleary's memoir. She has just come out with a new Ramona-the-Pest book which I'm sure I must read, but first, this. So far it's great fun. She was two when World War I ended and her mother told her to remember the day always. Another time she was so taken with a beautiful white damask tablecloth she left inky palmprints all over it!

Then today we went to the Giants-Pirates game. We drove past the new, temporary, Ren Faire site at Nut Tree, and the traffic was nowhere near as bad as I'd feared. In fact, when we got to the game, we asked what was going on in lot C, and it turned out to be the KNBR luau. It was free! We got food and prizes, and 5 shell leis which I wore at the game. I'll give one to Sam next week.

We had the real nosebleed seats this time. We were so high up I could nearly see both the pitcher and the catcher in the same binocular frame! Our prize was a "Tell-it-Goodbye" pin for the Earthquake world series. This was noplace to be sitting and be reminded of the earthquake!
Barry Bonds, got his 427th Home run in the 1st inning, and later stole his 459th base. No one's ever done 500-500, but it looks like he might. There were 2 homers on each side, but Dusty Baker didn't replace Shawn Estes till the 9th, and this time Rob Nen closed the game like he should. 5-3, us.

I had stuff for Roni, so we stopped. They tell us the bar at the hotel charged $1700. That is a LOT of champagne and wine! Especially when we know of at least 5 people who didn't drink, or only drank one glass. They think R.J.'s mother, who'd been really interested in the bar, opened it too soon. The hotel overcharged for everything. The seat covers were $5 apiece, for instance. Oh, well, it was a nice wedding, anyway.

On the way home, we passed a car with a wire-and-mesh snail on top of it. Then one had a roach. Later, there was a car all done up, but we dunno what it was. It sort of resembled a lowrider with delusions of Hum-V.

One pound, putting me back at pre-wedding weight. 9 left. My next project, if Rich is going to be up to it, would be just before my birthday, a nice dinner-auction with the wetlands reserve, so 9 pounds, 5 weeks. We may not be doing that, though. No walking. No magazines, but I did rearrange the furniture in a good way so things look better. Lots of mail out. I even asked Vince's girlfriend to come for Christmas so I can see a little of him.
